The Rainbow Gathering has been thousands of peaceful people spending time together in the wildlands of America since 1972. They employ the right of assembly to peacefully celebrate brother and sisterhood with people from all ages and walks of life for around two weeks at the end of June and the first Part of July. They are now declared by the Agricultural Department as "National Incidents." This year at the gathering in Colorado, law enforcement agents (LEAs) carrying the carbine version of the M16 A2 assault rifle harassed and bullied people who went to the gathering to the extreme. One woman I know saw one of these LEAs pepper spray her dog when it greeted him in a friendly way and was sprayed herself when she protested. One ten year old boy was nearly removed as a "runaway" and was finally given a short time frame to find his parents who were there which he did. In the aftermath it was obviously a bullying of the lad and showed others witnessing this that if they were not afraid to reduce a child to tears and to use him as a foil for bullying, they would gladly do that or worse to an adult. Allot of very sophisticated psychological tactics and techniques were used by these LEOs in what they did in Colorado this year, and we should be all disturbed by this, A friend of mine who is advanced party says these LEAs spoke of Rainbow Hippies are "terroristic" and "dangerous." Thousands of tickets were issued and a mobile courtroom was set up to handle the preliminary adjudication of these harassing actions of people peacefully enjoying the woods far from civilization. He tried to rent Ryder trucks but was informed by Ryder they were advised not to rent to perpetrators of a "National Incident." When the first roadblocks tried to keep people from returning to there tents and equipment they peacefully surrounded the LEAs and these men freaked out to a long standing use of non-violent action to draw rifles on these people and scream that if people didn't move, they would first shoot the pets in the crowd. They suppressed attendance, there is no doubt of this, and they are going for an eradication of these gatherings. How you can call people gathering in the middle of nowhere - many of who have homes, families and jobs "terrorists" and "dangerous" is incomprehensible. I will be going to the next gathering and will be doing "cop watch." We have many photos of these LOAs assaulting and harassing people, and I will try to get many of them scanned and posted as a picture is worth a thousand words. There are things happening that point to bigger and much worse things happening. My friend was most disturbed by an overheard conversation where LEAs spoke of the job of disrupting the gathering as "training" and "a great training" for something or the other. The next gathering will be near Texas, and I am going to document these operations myself, or die trying.

I will very defined do so. The Rainbow Family for the first time is going to file a lawsuit against this well organized, systematic, unwarranted and unprovoked harassment obviously done with the intent of destroying the idea people can in an unorganized fashion get together and camp out and enjoy each other's company. All you need to go to a gathering is some camping gear and yourself. Everyone can speak in the circles where the necessary discussions of the nuts and bolts aspects of running the gatherings is done. Everyone who comes is fed and looked after. They have gone on all this time with no major problems of need for oversight, and we can't see any reason to act scared of them and to bully those who go. ('Rainbow Gathering 1992', USFS Report, pg. 1) Every year the Forest Service does a report on the Gathering. Every report relates that the Gathering caused no problems, and that the land was left as good, if not better, than it was in the beginning. The proposed regulations would render this harmless religious observance a "crime", and legitimize the kinds of severe enforcement measures that have been imposed, beyond the pale of the law, for years. Some folks think the problem is just a few wild bureaucrats who've run amok. Others think the problem is that government thrives on power: Power corrupts, the more power government has, the more it wants, and that these regulations are the "logical" extension of the government's continuing drive for power. What hasn't the government already regulated? What valid interest can the government possibly have to regulate freedom of thought and assembly?

The way the site is set up precludes a direct link, and I do not wish to repost all of it to clog the thread. Besides, there is allot of interesting material in "the Legal Stuff" and other sections that talk about the problem and give background regarding the gatherings and the actions against them which are still going on and escalating in force and scale.
