US polygamy sect leader arrested A polygamist sect leader who has been on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List has been arrested in Las Vegas.

Warren Jeffs, 50, was pulled over by a Nevada Highway Patrol on Monday along with his brother and one of his wives.

He went into hiding in May after being charged in Arizona with sexual misconduct for allegedly arranging marriages between minors and older men.

Mr Jeffs leads the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS) in Arizona and Utah.

Warren Jeffs, who is reputed to have 70 wives, took over the leadership of the church after his father Rulon died in 2002.

Road to heaven

The 10,000-strong FLDS split from the Mormon Church more than a century ago after the latter renounced polygamy. The sect dominates the towns of Colorado City, in Arizona, and Hildale, Utah, less than a mile away.

Members of FLDS believe a man must marry at least three wives in order to ascend to heaven.

Polygamy is illegal in the US, but the authorities have reportedly been reluctant to confront the FLDS for fear of sparking a tragedy similar to the 1993 siege of the Branch Davidian sect in Waco, Texas, which led to the deaths of around 80 members.

However, correspondents say the church is coming under increasing pressure from authorities in Utah and Arizona.

umm, if a man must marry at least 3 women to get into heaven, does that mean a woman's soul is at least 3 times bigger than a man's? or is this cult like Islam, with no place for women in paradise...unless you are one of the houris serving the faithful, of course ;)

(whispers to Zipporah & Christine - not much of a catch is he? unless he is a "cunning linguist" lol)

Let me just say for the record, I would never want more than one wife.

Here's why.

You think you've got problems when you leave the toilet seat up by accident with one wife, why would you want to compound it? Imagine screwing something up, and then having a whole group of people who are angry at you. NO THANKS.

One wife will let things go after a couple of days. Three? That just keeps the pot stirring. Not a chance in hell would I want more than one wife.

Now... Temporary clones of my wife, that's something else.

What's that Mr. Nipples? You want me to ask the nice lady about her rack?.

the mormon polygamists generally don't have those kinds of problems with their wives.

a fellow in that community might typically have 3 wives and absolutely no complaints out of any of them.

Yeah... Right... BWAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAAHAHAHHAAHHAAAAHAHAHHAAHAAH

Seriously, there are days when a man can't get out of the dog house, no matter what he does. Mormon or no, every man has those days.

I know a guy from Hildale. He has 3 wives. I like him. I know several other guys from Hildale too. They seem like fine people.

I think your speculation about what they think is silly.

believe me - on the happiness index these polygamists are ahead of many outside this group.

There are other problems though, the teenage girls forced into being a 52 year old man's 4th wife, for example. There are some who have escaped to tell their stories.

And, there are the stories of the teenage boys kicked out of town because the old men don't like the competition.

Something unhealthy about it, IMO, but no community is perfect. In many cases, it seems to work-out to everyone's satisfaction.

"If there’s another 9/11 or a major war in the Middle-East involving a U.S. attack on Iran, I have no doubt that there will be, the day after or within days an equivalent of a Reichstag fire decree that will involve massive detentions in this country."

gosh - where do i sign up? perhaps the wives have developed a "special closeness" with their sisters! i hope the poor men don't feel too left out of things...

...only problem i can foresee though, the mormon polygamist husbands had better watch out they aren't replaced by straws and liquid nitrogen, just like the bulls!

isn't eBay wonderful, girls ;)

this is intriguing - do these guys you know believe it is possible for a woman to go to heaven when she dies? and if she can, why does she only need one husband to get there...or am i missing the point here?

I agree with you. I don't agree with polygamy.

I just wanted to stick up for them. because no community is perfect. we have great flaws. and the mormon polygamists I know have a lot of good qualities.

as I told you before i work for a general contractor. One of our major sub- contractors is from Hildale. The guy that runs that business is a first-class businessman and everyone likes everyone on their crew. they're all from Hildale.

The guy has 3 wives. there's two families in Hildale though the town has about 1500 people. there's the Jeff's family and the other one that my acquaintance is a patriarch of. The guy I know did not marry any under-age girls.

or am i missing the point here?

I don't know exactly why they go for polygamy.

but we have a lot of dysfunctionalism everywhere it seems. that's one reason I wouldn't throw mud at them over it. I forget the name they use for outsiders. It's like jews call outsiders goy, they have a name also, but I forget what it is.

The guy I know is a very excellent businessman. from a small town in southwest Utah he does jobs all over Arizona, in New Mexico, in Texas, in Colorado. and all his employees are from Hildale too. He owns a lot of equipment. the other sub-contractors in his trade rent equipment at very high hourly rates. But this guy owns his own equipment. He learned how to buy it and maintain it and everything. He's done contracting in more than one trade too. both home- building and commercial. big projects and small. all that is very impressive. you might not understand - they live in the middle of nowhere - and yet they do jobs over a vast area. England is very densely populated compared to here. Every weekend they go home, it's about a 4-5 hour drive.

yes it is! that's why we live in Scotland ;)

i'm not knocking adults freely consenting to live in polygamous marriages - that's up to them. i AM knocking paedophiles who hide behind religion to sexually exploit children and vulnerable people and it doesn't matter to me whether the pervert is Christian, Buddhist, Moslem, whatever.

but one thing i do feel very strongly about is the inequality of men and women in the sight of God/Allah/Jehovah. and i'm deeply suspicious about any religion that sees me as the divine property or subordinate of a male.

unless there is a sound biological reason for polygyny (or polyandry) such as a high mortality rate in a community of girls or boys, it seems elitist and power- based. what do the unwed men do in this religious group and what is the incidence of congenital deformities and genetic disorders against the rest of the population? we've seen the result of closed genetic communities in Scotland where there is a higher incidence of a dreadfully cruel disorder called Huntingdon's in people who orginated in the fishing villages along the Moray coast. studies into Huntingdon's in countries that had emigrations from Scotland, such as Canada show they can trace the genealogy of the disorder back to my country.

inbreeding can have dreadful results and no matter how well-meaning and consensual these marriages are, they run the risk of condemning their progeny to debilitating genetic illnesses :(

on a lighter note i presume the women don't live together because we tend to synchronise our fertility cycles when under one roof and the poor husband will experience multiple PMT backlash followed by sexual exhaustion on a monthly basis!

I'm not pro-polygamy Mrs. Ruthie. but as you are interested or curious at least about them I'll tell you a little bit that I know of them.

if a family has multiple wives they will usually live under one roof. but sometimes it is practical for them to have multiple homes on same plot of land. the wives take to calling each other 'sister' and become very close to each other. they work on being close - it's a family thing. each wife has her own bedroom. and the man rotates as to where he sleeps. the wives frequently decide his sleeping schedule even, they trade him back & forth and have fun doing it. the mormons don't consume alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, aspartame or illegal drugs. not even tea. not even a sip. so this is good for the men's prostate glands, and you know what that means to a man's ability to function. the men with multiple wives like that have their sexual function stoked so they tend to perform from what I'm told. they produce a lot of children. the children are not deformed or retarded as you said. but after 150+ years of living like this they do have a strong resemblance to one another.

but most mormons do not practice polygamy. I think it is done primarilly in rural areas of northeast arizona & southern Utah. and it is a minority of the polygamists who will marry under-age girls.
