So we've been told over and over again, simply and repetitively. 9/11 changed Everything! This is a New World! The air strike into the First Tower was like a sacred spear of myth, lancing a traumatic wound into American's sense of safety. The second Tower was pierced Live on TV. The impaling was shown repetitively to an entranced audience. A blast of Freedom blew out of the rent in our collective psyche. The third blow into the Pentagon rolled away the stone, unleashing the mightiest military the world had ever seen. Shock and awe reverberated outwards until the entire world no longer felt safe. The fourth plane crashed and burned in Shanksville, PA. Let's Roll! became a metaphor for the united struggle of Good People to overwhelm the forces of Evil, even at the cost of our own lives. When the Towers fell less than two hours later, pulverized clouds of dust covered blocks of NYC with the gray remains of a mass cremation. Rescuers and bystanders were blasted into stunned silence, as were Americans and the world beyond. Good night and God Bless America." George W. Bush, 9/11/01 national televised address. A great outpouring of international horror and prayers was birthed. Some rejoiced in their enemy's wounding that day, but more started to peel away from the coalition as George Bush and his paladins declared and pursued their Holy War, the new Crusade for Infinite Justice. A story emerged quickly of Muslim terrorist hijackers sent by Osama bin Laden, overwhelming the crew and piloting the jets into their targets. Within days the pictures of the 19 hijackers named by the FBI were prominently displayed during every newshour. To some it seemed an overly rapid conclusion considering all witnesses were dead. Within two months an American air war was waged on the Taliban in Afghanistan, with special teams sent into hunt down the Judas they hid. Two years later the War on Terrorism was widened to Iraq, with increasing pressure to Just Roll It! into Iran and Syria despite the quagmire in Iraq. The disaster in Iraq and the lies about Saddam's WMD and his connection to 9/11 was yeast for dissent about what really happened to ferment on the internet, like new wine in a new skin. Bush, National Cathedral, 9/14/01 National Day of Prayer and Remembrance ritual. The dissent has grown so vigorously that the mainstream media, began to cover them, mostly indebunking stories. An article in Popular Mechanics gave short refutations of 15 "claims" by 9/11 "conspiracy theorists" attempting to quash them. That the author, Benjamin Chertoff, was reportedly the cousin of the new head of Homeland Security only fed more conspiracies. Simply denouncing heresy leads to doubts in a simple minded audience that tends to doubt what the media says is Just So. When 9/11 became a national religion with almost unanimous fervor, few Americans wanted to question the orthodox view on 9/11. When any doubts about the official dogma meant shunning, very few voiced their skepticism. Mainstream media, talking heads and government officials at all levels and persuasion accepted as gospel whatever they were told by the feds, no matter how ludicrous or easily challenged. And when the official story was changed, so did their revised version. And that's the way it was, media and government officials agree. However, Uncomfortable Truths quickly emerged about prior knowledge. The excuse that no one could have imagined it, thus no one could have prevented it, was shredded. The smoking gun of the Aug. 6, 2001 presidential briefings showed that even George W. Bush was in the loop about hijacked planes, al Qaeda terrorists in America, and imminent plans to attack. He then went for a month long vacation on his ranch in Crawford. There were four NORAD war games scheduled for the day of 9/11, including computer simulations and live flights of hijacked planes in the North East Air Defense System. There was an evacuation response exercise to a plane crashing into the National Reconnaissance Office that morning, similar to the one practiced at the Pentagon the year before. Warnings based on actionable intelligence about plans to crash planes into American targets, and al Qaeda terrorists training at flight schools in the US were found in foreign intelligence warnings, internal memos, anti-terrorism trainings and scenarios. Somehow they failed to stop 19 suspicious Muslims from completing their martyrdom mission. "No one could have imagined them taking a plane, slamming it into the Pentagon, into the World Trade Center, using planes as a missile. I probably should have said, 'I could not imagine', because within two days people started coming to me and saying, "The intelligence did look at information about this." A new excuse was that the problem was legal impediments to sharing information among intelligence agencies. Those with blind faith in Bush and his high priests accept that no one was at fault because information was not shared due to quaint laws and the cult of intelligence and need to know dogma stifling the sharing of info. Now that we have the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Patriot Act no problems. This didn't satisfy all the faithful and they have officially split into a schism closely paralleling Republican and Democrat elected officials and agents. The loyal opposition, the reform pew, hold it was the incompetence of leadership and staff throughout those agencies that allowed the attackers to fumble through their defenses. The DHS performance with Katrina supports their belief. If their deacons were in charge these agencies would be censured into ship shape. The biggest hole in this donut defense of incompetence is that no one resigned, was fired, demoted or even given a written warning, much less charged with dereliction of duties, perjury or obstruction of a criminal investigation. The agencies were given bigger budgets with less oversight. Both sects have little interest in looking at evidence, anomalies or dissonances that might challenge their official dogma of what really happened. They gloss over them by saying, it's just a coincidence. They are Coincidence Theorists. "Fog of War could explain why some people were confused on the day of 9/11, but it could not explain why all of the after action reports, accident investigations and public testimony by FAA and NORAD officials accounts of 9/11 was untrue." Millions of deviants who do not accept the official gospel have ventured into a labyrinth of conspiracies. Through ridicule and vitriol they preach their heresies on the internet, DVD's, small press books, zines, word of mouth, and 9/11 dollars to spread their Truth about 9/11. The majority of heretics believe that government officials Let It Happen On Purpose, (LIHOP) to create a New Pearl Harbor to trigger their desire for an endless war on terrorism. A Zogby poll recently found 43% of Americans believe this, despite mainstream media pundits and government agents virtual censorship of evidence for this. LIHOP has extensive official, government approved evidence for their position. A close reading of the 9/11 Commission's unanimous, bipartisan findings supports this conclusion. Despite testimony to them, they agreed to find that the problems were simply a system needing and now being reformed. They even dredged up and revived the totally discredited lack of imagination excuse. "The conspiracy theorist starts with the conclusion and then looks for reasons to rule everything out that doesn't fit, with an uncritical acceptance of any argument that suggests a conspiracy." Daniel Pipes, 9/8/03 Webster Tarpley, author of 9/11: Synthetic Terrorism believes there were identifiable moles, operating as part of a private network which has infiltrated various government agencies, who gave assistance to the hijacker patsies. The FBI agent[s] in headquarters who denied the Minnesota field office repeated requests to search Zacarias Moussaoui's computer and ignored warning memos from the Phoenix office about suspicious Arabs, who might be al Qaeda members, training to fly planes let it happen he believes. FBI agent Harry Samit sent off 70 memos about Moussaoui trying to break through this logjam to obtain a FISA warrant. As reported in the LA Times, a senior officer, Michael Maltbie edited out key details from one of these memos, and the request to search the computer was denied. These agents were rewarded and promoted. An increasing minority have gone beyond the pale. They theorize that a secretive cabal inside and outside of government Made It Happen On Purpose (MIHOP) to achieve their own nefarious purposes and objectives. The MIHOP people are getting more media attention than the LIHOPs, mostly because it's easier to ridicule or debunk them. "Senator Levin, you and other Democrats in congress have voiced fears that you simply don't have enough money for the large increase in defense that the Pentagon is seeking, especially for missile defense. Does this sort of thing convince you that an emergency exists in this country to increase defense spending?" 9/11/01 nationally televised news briefing, Sec Def Donald Rumsfeld. Dr. David Ray Griffin burst onto the conspiracy scene with his 2004 book, The New Pearl Harbor: Disturbing Questions about the Bush Administration and 9/11. He said the motive for the Bush administration making it happen was to fulfill their neo-conservative agenda. Their vision was well documented of the US becoming an unchallenged superpower, laying down the rules of a new world order and being prepared to enforce them. A unipolar world with American unrivaled military power, on land, sea, air and into space was their plan. A neo-con think tank called Project for the New American Century, (PNAC) included Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Libby, Jeb Bush and many other influential neo-cons who would ride to power with W. Bush like ticks on a Texas coonhound. Their wish list to rebuild America's defenses by transforming the military, tossing aside international treaties around nuclear weapons, missile defense shields, even arming space was published in September 2000. They recognized that this would be a long process of transformation absent some "catastrophic and catalyzing event like a new Pearl Harbor". On 9/11 Bush reportedly wrote in his journal, that "the Pearl Harbor of the 21st century took place today". It was the fire that killed the buildings. There's nothing on earth that could survive those temperature with that amount of fuel burning. The columns would have melted, the floors would have melted and eventually they would have collapsed on one on top of the other." Chris Wise, BBC reporter, shortly after 9/11 Dr. Steven Jones, physics professor at Brigham Young University in Utah, gave a lecture there in September, 2005 to a packed auditorium of faculty, laying out his case to prove the official explanation false. He contends that the many eye and ear witness reports of multiple explosions in the buildings, the lack of fires severe enough to weaken steel, the near free fall collapses of the buildings, the presence of molten metal in the rubble, and contradictions between the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) explanations for the collapse support his theory. As sheared girders were being pulled out of the rubble their ends were dripping molten steel, The ground temperature of the rubble was between 600 and 1500 degrees Fahrenheit for six months afterwards. These steel beams were rapidly shipped off to China and India for recycling, without testing for "crucial evidence that could answer many questions about high rise building design practices and performance under fire conditions". A January 2002 editorial in Fire Engineering demanded that the wholesale destruction of evidence be stopped. It wasn't. Jones posits the use of thermate, a sulfur, aluminum and iron oxide compound that can rapidly melt steel, to explain the presence of sulfur found in samples from WTC girders, and the molten metal in the basements. Jones says the filmed squibs exploding out the sides of the buildings as they fall, appear well below the pancaking floors at 0.2 second intervals, debunking Popular Mechanics explanation that these were air expulsions from the collapse. He calculates it would take 0.6 seconds for a floor to fall to the next. WTC 7 was not hit by jets, but also collapsed later that afternoon. Steel beams pulled from it's wreckage had been partly evaporated. The FEMA report in 2002 said the specifics of the fires in WTC 7 and how they caused the building to collapse remain unknown at this time. Jones has been attacked because he's a professor of physics, not of materials or construction engineering, yet many of his points are based on the laws of physics, eyewitness reports, filmed evidence, or logical deconstruction of official reports and analysis of the towers collapse. George Bush, Nov. 10, 2001 in a speech to the UN The internet viewership of the website and video Loose Change, made by a couple of twenty something kids for $6000, with more than ten million people watching their DVD download has drawn widespread attention. Vanity Fair even wrote about this as a cultural phenomena. The Loose Change video focuses on the Twin Towers collapse showing numerous fire rescue men reporting explosions in the buildings. Their film pictures government documents from June 20001 that assigned Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld responsibility for military shoot down orders of hijacked planes. The video delves into the Northwoods plan by JFK's joint chiefs of staff to trigger a war against Cuba by shooting down a drone plane disguised as an American passenger jet. "Conspiracy theories are a kind of secular religion. People feel great anxiety by the thought that nobody's in control" David Horowitz, 60's radical turned neo-conservative After the 9/11 commission came out with their book in July 2005, Griffin published Omissions and Distortions of the 9/11 Commission in 2006. One of his dissections of their report involves the changing timeline of FAA and NEADS response to the hijackings. This has changed three times, and he says "when suspects in a criminal case keep changing their story we assume they must be trying to conceal the truth." The first version was that no military jets were sent up until after the strike on the Pentagon at 9:38 am. According to this timeline, response procedures that had been performed within ten minutes hundreds of times before, were not carried out for almost two hours after the FAA noticed that a commercial jet had turned off it's transponder and changed course from its designated flight plan at 8:15 am. Within a week, NORAD had come up with a new timeline that implicitly blamed the FAA for notifying them so late in the game that they could not intercept. Especially since they did not scramble jets from the closest airbases, and sent them out over the ocean to circle around at low speeds, instead of directly towards NYC and Washington DC at full bore. The 9/11 commission, Griffin says, understood these inexplicable delays implied a stand down order, and came up with a third timeline. Their new version showed that NEADS/NORAD were never notified by the FAA in time to intercept any jets, including flight 93, which many researchers claimed had been shot down by the military, instead of being taken down by a team of passengers. This now official timeline placed all the responsibility, but no blame on FAA air traffic controllers and their superiors for utter incompetence in their failure to follow protocol and notify the military in a timely manner. To do this they had to ignore sworn testimony given to them about events that morning, or simply claim the times were wrong, without explanation or prosecution for perjury. "The information revolution now gives us access to too much information. Our problems are that we're just overwhelmed, so in some sense we just basically don't even know where to turn. Johnathon Taplin, Annenberg School for Communication at USC They ignored the testimony of Norman Mineta, Secretary of Transportation. He told them that at 9:20 a.m. he went down to the Presidential Emergency Operations Center, where Cheney was already in charge and in communication with various heads of agencies, including the FAA. At about 9:25 a.m. he witnessed an exchange, presumably referring to flight 77 which hit the Pentagon. "A young man would come in and out and say to the VP, the plane is 50 miles, out, the plane is 30 miles out... When it got down to the plane is 10 miles out, the young man said, 'Do the orders still stand?'É the VP whipped his neck around and said 'Of course the orders still stand, have you heard anything to the contrary?'". These orders were probably not to shoot down the plane, since that didn't happen. Were these the stand down orders most conspiracists believe were issued to allow the attacks to proceed unhindered? The 9/11 commission decreed that "no one from FAA headquarters requested military assistance regarding flight 93 before it crashed into the hills of western Pennsylvania, even though sounds of screaming, and a voice saying a "we have a bomb" was heard by an air traffic controller a half hour earlier. The commission presents a case for utter incompetence at all levels of the FAA. However later that the same day "an unprecedented operation of grounding all aircraft in the country was executed flawlessly", according to the FAA. "We're always ready to believe something about which we know nothing." Clifford Bryant, sociology professor of Virginia Tech University In a Scripps poll in 2006, 35% of American adults believe it is very or somewhat likely that federal officials either took no action to stop the attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon or actively participated in them "because they wanted the United States to go to war in the middle east." Of course, 30% of Americans couldn't even tell pollsters what year the attacks happened. How many Americans believe something proves nothing. Sixty per cent of Fox News viewers still believe that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, and 90% of American soldiers fighting in Iraq believe that Saddam Hussein helped plan 9/11. "The wonderful thing about a conspiracy theory is that it allows you to understand everything perfectly. It discloses to you that all the evil in the world can be attributed to a single cause."
