Title: Joe Wilson: The End of an Error

As National Public Radio described the story behind Joe Wilson's amusingly titled book, "The Politics of Truth" (available on the $1 table in fine bookstores everywhere), in May 2004:

"Last July Wilson wrote an op-ed piece in the New York Times saying that this particular intelligence regarding Iraq was false. A week later, columnist Robert Novak revealed that Wilson's wife, Valerie Plame, was a CIA operative."

This is like saying: "John Hinckley shot Ronald Reagan; Reagan later died." Every word of that is true, but what it implies -- that Hinckley killed Reagan -- is false.

In the exact same way, the grand White House conspiracy promoted by Wilson and the mainstream media cites chronological events to prove causation.

The media's conspiracy theory is:

Wilson said Bush's famed "16 words" in his 2003 State of the Union address -- "The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa" -- were a lie.

Wilson's wife was then revealed to be an "undercover" spy at the CIA, exposing Wilson and his family to danger.

Therefore, she was "outed" by the White House as retaliation against Wilson for calling Bush a liar.

Point No. 1 of liberals' conspiracy theory has been proved false since Britain's Butler Commission reviewed its government's pre-war intelligence on Iraq and concluded that "the British government had intelligence from several different sources indicating that this visit was for the purpose of acquiring uranium."

It was again proved false when our own Senate Intelligence Committee also concluded, in July 2004, that Saddam Hussein had sought uranium from Niger.

So there went the White House's motive for muddying up Wilson: Government fact-finding commissions, here and in the United Kingdom, were muddying up Wilson on their own simply by finding facts.

Point No. 2, that Wilson's wife was an undercover agent, has been proved false even to the willfully blind since Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald announced the conclusion to his pointless investigation last year, saying that Plame's employment with the CIA was not undercover, but merely "classified."

Everything is "classified" at the CIA. They have no idea when 19 terrorists are about to hijack commercial aircraft and slaughter 3,000 Americans, but the CIA is very good at play-acting James Bond spy games.

How covert was Valerie Plame at the CIA? Her top-secret code name was "Valerie Plame."

Recall too that Blair knew this intelligence wasn't very good and that he warned Bush of this before the State of the Union address - and that Bush was aware of this when he spewed the 16 words.

Also recall that Bush had had Wilson's report discrediting the yellow cake theory for many months at the time he spewed the 16 words.

Boy, the Republican goob fooler press sure leaves out a lot of stuff.

This is a deliberate and knowing lie to keep the goobers from jumping ship.

Usually these guys just spin like they did above on the yellow cake. They are really sticking their necks out here. Makes me think the new stories coming out about the actual extent and purpose of Plame's undercover status have them running scared.

If you are correct in your political philosophy, why is it necessary to tell deliberate lies -- like this one -- in order to support it?

"She was operations chief of the Joint Task Force on Iraq, a unit of the Counterproliferation Division of the clandestine Directorate of Operations. For the two years prior to her outing, Valerie Wilson worked to gather intelligence that would support the Bush White House's assertion that Saddam Hussein's Iraq was loaded with WMDs. This means that Armitage--as well as Karl Rove and Scooter Libby--leaked classified information about a CIA officer whose job it had been to look for evidence of Saddam's WMD programs. During this part of her career, Valerie Wilson traveled overseas to monitor operations she and her staff at JTFI were mounting. She was no analyst, no desk-jockey, no paper- pusher. She was an undercover officer in charge of running critical covert operations. Credit "Robin"

yes, of course, senate committees are to be believed without question. They have never lied to America, or covered up for government screw ups. Nope. Never.

How covert was Valerie Plame at the CIA? Her top-secret code name was "Valerie Plame."

This lie as well as the others in this article continue.

Powell himself said the documents might be forged:

Both Powell and Rice were asked about the allegation last week by Mohamed ElBaradei, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, that the United States had supplied forged documents to support its contention that Iraq had attempted to acquire uranium from Niger in breach of U.N. sanctions.

"It was the information that we had. We provided it. If that information is inaccurate, fine," Powell said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0307/13/le.00.html
And here's Condi trying to minimize the damage Smirk made by including those tempting words in his SOTU:

GEORGE W. BUSH, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa.

BLITZER: All right, the key question: How did that get into the president's State of the Union address, arguably the most important speech he gives every year? How did it get in, if that wasn't necessarily meeting the standards that you think that should have been met?

RICE: Wolf, let me just start by saying, it is 16 words, and it has become an enormously overblown issue.

The president of the United States did not go to war because of the question of whether or not Saddam Hussein sought the uranium in Africa.

The lies are always blamed on "liberals", yet almost everyone on 4um is a former GOPer. (I voted a straight GOP ticket since Nixon's 2nd term all the way through 2000. I finally woke up before 2004 and voted 3rd party. And my voting history is somewhat similar to many here, although others here woke up sooner and voted 3rd party well before 2004.)

What Valerie Plame Really Did at the CIA

Hubris: The Inside Story of Spin, Scandal, and the Selling of the Iraq War (Hardcover)

one more lie still going around about Wilson, the truth once more:

http://www.time.com/time/nation/printout/0,8816,465270,00.html

In an interview with TIME, Wilson, who served as an ambassador to Gabon and as a senior American diplomat in Baghdad under the current president's father, angrily said that his wife had nothing to do with his trip to Africa. "That is bulls__t. That is absolutely not the case," Wilson told TIME. "I met with between six and eight analysts and operators from CIA and elsewhere [before the Feb 2002 trip]. None of the people in that meeting did I know, and they took the decision to send me. This is a smear job."

If he was lying, these analysts could explain that very quickly. But instead, the WH lied and lied and lied and lied about Wilson and Plame.

Everyone should read the link about Plame that Zipporah posted. It explains just how important this so-called "desk jockey" was. She was in charge of verifying WMDs in Iraq.
She was no analyst, no desk-jockey, no paper-pusher. She was an undercover officer in charge of running critical covert operations.

"If there’s another 9/11 or a major war in the Middle-East involving a U.S. attack on Iran, I have no doubt that there will be, the day after or within days an equivalent of a Reichstag fire decree that will involve massive detentions in this country."

Are you a dedicated shill like the guy who does the climate change stuff over on LP? Or barf alert?

You seem to fit the pattern. No regular participation on the forum and single subject posting of GOP propaganda. Single subject posting with great regularity. Always Wilson stuff from questionable sources.

Really fits into the standard shill pattern.

Whoever wrote this article needs to remove their head from the cranial recesses of their anal cavity. The yahoos of the world, i.e., our liar in chief, britain's liar in chief, and the israeli doofus, not to mention the aussie, Howard, and finally, the u.n. incompetents, keep passing info back and forth--it is the same bullshit getting passed around under the mantle that if it is said long enough, people will believe it, or to be quite simple, it is propaganda.

They then have the cover to say that our intel received intel from another credible source; hence, we take this action.

This being the case, I've even heard the assholes suggest, thru words, that 'even the un has intel that aggrees'.......well, heavens above--since when did the u.n. develop its own intel agency? They receive info from liars around the world who try to pass it off as legit.

Whatever happened to the ambassador to Niger, that Barbra Owens-Fitzgerald or patrick, that had been passing reports to our gumint that the Niger yellowcake was bullshit; and also the general who was sent to check who also confirmed it was bullshit.

Howard, the Aussie, at least had the guts to admit that he took his actions based on intel they received from the brits or us.............he didn't try to imply that his own intel agency made an independent finding.

How in the hell can anyone believe what lying gubmints say.

yes, of course, senate committees are to be believed without question. They have never lied to America, or covered up for government screw ups. Nope. Never.

And, of course, they have their own independent intelligence agencies that have independently confirmed any of the bullshit lies!

This whole friggin mes is like the game we played as kids..........you line up, someone tells the person at the end a story, and it is whispered to each kid until you get to the end and that person tells out loud what was whispered to them.

It may have started out as 'once upon a time' but it ended up at the 'end of times'.
