BYU places '9/11 truth' professor on paid leave Copyright 2006 Deseret Morning News By Tad Walch Deseret Morning News PROVO — Brigham Young University placed physics professor Steven Jones on paid leave Thursday while it reviews his involvement in the so-called "9/11 truth movement" that accuses unnamed government agencies of orchestrating the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center. BYU will conduct an official review of Jones' actions before determining a course of action, university spokeswoman Carri Jenkins said. Such a review is rare for a professor with "continuing status" at BYU, where Jones has taught since 1985. Jones was teaching two classes this semester, which began Tuesday. Other professors will cover those classes, and Jones will be allowed to continue to do research in his area of academic study, Jenkins said. Jones became a celebrity among 9/11 conspiracy-theory groups after he wrote a paper titled "Why Indeed Did the World Trade Center Buildings Collapse?" The paper was published two weeks ago in the book "9/11 and American Empire: Intellectuals Speak Out" and lays out Jones' hypothesis that the three towers fell because of pre-positioned demolition charges — not because of the planes that hit two of the towers. When Jones began to share his demolition theory publicly last fall, he politely declined to speculate about who set the charges other than to say terrorist groups couldn't have been the source. Then, later, he started to speak publicly about research conducted at BYU on materials from ground zero. He said he found evidence of thermite — a compound used in military detonations — in the materials. In recent weeks, after becoming the co-chairman of the group Scholars for 9/11 Truth, Jones seemed willing to go further, implicating unnamed government groups but not President Bush. The Deseret Morning News requested a statement from the university Wednesday afternoon for a story it was preparing on Jones and his high-profile role in the 9/11 truth movement. University officials informed Jones of the decision to place him on leave Thursday afternoon and released a statement to the newspaper Thursday night. "BYU has repeatedly said that it does not endorse assertions made by individual faculty," the statement said. "We are, however, concerned about the increasingly speculative and accusatory nature of these statements by Dr. Jones." Last fall, BYU faculty posted statements on the university Web site that questioned whether Jones subjected the paper to rigorous academic peer review before he posted it at physics.byu.edu. Jones removed the paper from BYU's Web site Thursday at the university's request. Efforts to reach Jones Thursday night were not successful. Jones told the Deseret Morning News on Wednesday that his paper had gone through an unusual third round of peer review in what is now an apparently unsuccessful effort to quell concerns on campus. "BYU remains concerned that Dr. Jones' work on this topic has not been published in appropriate scientific venues," the university statement said. Jenkins said BYU's reputation was a consideration, too. "It is a concern when faculty bring the university name into their own personal matters of concern," she said. Jones, also known for his cold fusion research, provided academic clout to the 9/11 truth movement. C-SPAN repeatedly broadcast a conference that featured Jones this summer. Recent articles about Sept. 11 conspiracy theories that focused at least in part on Jones have appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Guardian in London and other publications. Recent rebuttals to the demolition theory have been released by the State Department and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, which published a 10,000-page report on the towers' collapse. A modified version of Jones' paper was scheduled to be published this week in the online Journal of 9/11 Studies. Jones is a co-editor of the journal. BYU does not grant tenure, generally regarded as a permanent position, to professors. However, it does give continuing status to professors found worthy after six years on campus. "Continuing status," Jenkins said, "grants the expectation that faculty members will have continuing employment at the university, although it is not a guarantee. They still need to meet satisfactory performance levels for scholarship, citizenship and teaching." The review will be conducted at three levels by the administration, the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences and the Physics Department.

BYU seems unconcerned about what this step may do to its accreditation. I thought the accrediting bodies demanded academic freedom.

Cover-Ups at Brigham Young University They have a tradition of image before truth at BYU. Early fathers of the University are depicted in illustrations with their beards gone even though the men never shaved in their lives. BYU is a place where they have a world class language department and other trappings that aid and abet the spread of the LDS church. The image is a strong consideration of this.

Honestly, I have to wonder what took them so long. The elite are getting sloppy in their cover-up of 9/11. If they wanted to silence this guy they should have done it when he first started talking about it, not now. It's too late now, too many people know about the paper he wrote for this to seem as anything other than a deliberate attempt to cover up the truth. This will IMO help, not hurt, the 9/11-truth movement.

Mark Well he might have done the most damage with his resarch because of his credentials, but I would have to say the honor of the most research on what really happened on 9/11 goes to Jim Hoffman.
God is always good! I see this move by BYU a little differently. Jones has become perhaps the first casuality of a new McCarthy witch hunt. This might have some serious blowback to the PTB. We'll know soon and my guess is yes.
If I had to guess, I'd say the the federal government threatened to pull research funding from the University if they didn't take care of the "Professor Jones problem." Removing him from his position will be the first step in discrediting him. After his removal, the government will probably offer lucrative research grants to those scientists willing to poke whatever holes they can in the Professor's mathematical theories, thus further discrediting him. My guess is that by this time next year, the good professor will be lucky to get a position at Tinbuktu Community College, located in Fumbuck, Idaho. He needs our prayers.

You're right on every point in that post. remember Anthony Sutton? He was history professor at two major universities. I think UCLA & Stanford. He was fired from the first job for writing history book about American business clique that supported the communist rise to power in Russia. He was fired from the second job for writing history book about American business clique that supported nazi rise to power in Germany. After that he became poor, couldn't work anywhere. Then someone handed him a book showing all members of skull & bones. Then he discovered many men in each of these two cliques were skull & bones. Then he wrote the skull & bones book that is a great resource. He died poor in 1999.

But if you were too critical, your position was suddenly cancelled and that was that. So, Professor Jones, is getting something right out of the old 3rd Reich Playbook. And BTW, I think it is probably Paul Craig Roberts who is responsbile for it because he has a relatively large readership and he has been mentioning Jones a lot lately. I had never heard of Jones until I read about him in a PCR column and I think I am pretty well read on 9-11.

Same situation to try and get a few structural/explosive engineers to review the findings. They just refuse to look. Jones is guilty of conducting real science, not the outlandish pre-conclusion coloring book put out by NIST.

I have no doubt he has forsaken the United States and its culture of porn and death, however I do not believe for a minute that he has forsaken every person within the United States. Even when He allowed the destruction of Israel He didn't forsake everyone. You should read "they thought they were free" about the Nazis. last I knew a few years ago two of Anthony Sutton's books were available for free on the internet. They cover the help that American & English bankers/business executives gave to the communists rising to power in Russia and also to the NAZIs rising to power in Germany. They're extremely well- documented books. his book about Skull & Bones you have to pay for. he was a real historian and fired for writing real history books - at 2 major universities.

I remember when Jones had first written his paper, and was featured on Alex Jones show.. He was starting to get more and more engagements on radio and even MSM news I believe. But about 3 weeks after being on Alex's show, he suddenly cancelled all future radio interviews - if I remember right he was saying the University was hounding him about it taking too much time from his classes... I thought back then BYU might have come under heat from the Fed threating to pull funding or something if they didn't "shut Jones up".... And I think this time has more to do with an "outside influence" than BYU making this decision on their own.

Basically, when you see an image put out by BYU, you can't assume that it accurately reflects reality as it was when the photograph was taken. Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't - you don't know for sure, but you do know that they edit photos without apology. When you read a story put out by BYU, can you trust it? Maybe, maybe not - we don't know that they have a history of editing written facts as well, but if they will edit facts in a photograph, what's to stop them from doing the same in a written account of the same events?
