New York, NY (PRWEB) September 7th, 2006 – As reported by ABC News, stunning military documents codenamed "Operation Northwoods" were declassified in recent years and show how in 1962, the top US military leaders planned an operation to create terror attacks against its own cities and kill US citizens. They included developing a fake Communist Cuban terror campaign in the Miami area, the use of airplanes, and much more. His book explains that these covert operations are designed to appear as if they are being carried out by other entities, such as other countries or terrorist groups, to help demonize them and justify wars for geopolitical reasons and for financial gains. The term "false flag" is derived from the naval warfare concept of flying false colors; that is, flying the flag of a country other than one's own. The ABC News article dated May 1, 2001 explains that Operation Northwoods was approved and signed by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Eisenhower appointee Army General Lyman L. Lemnitzer, and was presented to Kennedy’s Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara on March 13, 1962. A year earlier, President Eisenhower, apparently aware of such dangers, had warned the nation during his January 17, 1961 farewell address: "In the counsels of Government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the Military Industrial Complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists, and will persist. We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals so that security and liberty may prosper together." http://www.eisenhower.archives.gov/farewell.htm General Lemnitzer, the Eisenhower appointee and highest ranking officer of the US military in 1962, recommended that Operation Northwoods be run by the military. It was signed and approved by all of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the panel comprising the highest-ranking members of each major branch of the Armed Forces. As per the ABC News article, the only reason why Operation Northwoods did not materialize in 1962 was because it was apparently turned down by President John F. Kennedy. By law, the President of the United States is the commander in chief. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Army, the Marine Corps, the Navy, the Air Force and the Coast Guard, are all under his command. The Joint Chiefs of Staff website explains that based on the Goldwater-Nichols DOD Reorganization Act of 1986, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is today the principal military adviser to the President but doesn’t exercise military command over any combatant forces. http://www.jcs.mil/# The ABC News article quotes author of "Body of Secrets – Anatomy of the Ultra-Secret National Security Agency," James Bamford, a former Washington Investigative Producer for ABC’s World News Tonight. He says that if such war plans against American cities were put into operation, it would have amounted to treason. The committee even called for an examination of any ties between Lemnitzer and right-wing groups. But Congress didn't get wind of Northwoods..." Media critic Zwicker says that today, Congress and journalists have access to the declassified documents of Operation Northwoods and that the media must indeed reflect on Eisenhower’s warning of vigilance and be willing to learn and investigate more, publish more and broadcast more information about false flag operations to help prevent such acts of treason from being committed in the future. In his controversial book critical of both the 9/11 "official story" and the media coverage of the events, Zwicker goes through the history of false flag operations dating back to the 1600s, and among many examples, cites the February 27th,1933 fire of the German Parliament (Reichstag fire) three days prior to Germany’s federal election. Historians later documented that the fire had been authorized by right-wing Nazis where Hitler used the event to declare a state of emergency and pressured the German President, Hindenburg, to sign a decree abolishing most of the human rights provisions of the Constitution. Recently, on August 29th 2006, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld recounted what he called "the lessons of history," including the failed efforts to appease the right-wing Adolf Hitler regime of the 1930s. JFK never signed off on the Operation Northwoods plans, but, if Waldron and Hartmann are right in their new Ultimate Sacrifice book, he did sign off on a plan in 1963 to assassinate Castro that was subverted and used to assassinate himself.

I've seen this referenced now and then over the years; but it is usually dismissed as a 'hoax'. I happened to be checking 'Florence' at FR (I know, but I have meteorology in my blood), and saw a thread referencing this topic...couldn't believe it hadn't been pulled yet. Followed the links and saw it sourced at Yahoo/ABC...hardly 'conspiracy' sites. Just thought I would post it to see what everyone thought of this news hitting the 'mainstream'.
I've never seen Northwoods called a hoax since James Bamford reported it in Body of Secrets. I was many years in military signals intelligence, and I am unaware of anything in Bamford's now three books on NSA and signals intelligence that is inaccurate.

It is my understanding that Army General Lyman L. Lemnitzer, who was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1960 to 1962, presented the Operation Northwoods plan to President Kennedy early in 1962, but, Kennedy rejected it in March. I think Lemnitzer thought he had destroyed all the evidence of Operation Northwoods, especially the documentation, but he was wrong. Thank God. People need to see it. Hitler had a trial for the Reichstag fire defendents. It backfired and they not only amply defended themsevles for an aquital but they implicated the Nazis themselves in the fire. All on live radio too. I wonder if Hitler is smacking himself in Hell for not just simply holding the defendents in secret prisons for half a decade with no trial and periodic torture like our "free" government has done with the 9/11 "ring leaders"?

There is a passage in the Gulag Archipeligo about the first and last show trial for "wreckers" in the early 1930's. The guy not only beat the rap, but made the Soviet judges look likes asses...they sentanced him to death by firing squad anyway. There was a near riot in the courthouse and the NKVD troops has to form a 360 degree circle around him and walk him like that 1/4th of a mile to the train station for transfer to a prison. In another case, the Russians shelled their own troops in 1939, blamed Finland for the deed, and used it for a pre-text to invade and start the winter war; despite the fact that the Finnish troops had pulled all their artillary out of firing range of the border during the summer of that year. Man, some of the quotes coming out of the Kremlin at that time remind me of Rumdumb and company. "We'll take Finland in 10 days. Best give us supplies for 12 just to be safe." 3 months and 150,000 dead later...

Freedom, especially when it is legitimised by a nod of government is far from the concept of "freedom."
Like the old Russian jokes says: "We have plenty of Freedom in USSR! For example: In America you can stand in front of white house and yell 'down with Reagan!" In Russia you can also stand in from of Kremlin and also yell 'down with Reagan!'" The USSR did have a heafty "Bill Of Rights" of sorts. Yet each and every "freedom" had a pesky footnote that said it was null and void if the acts were in contrast to the well being of the state. That's why you never saw any Vietnam style protests over the Afghan invasion and all the anti-nuke rallies before 1989 called for only the US to disarm.

Footnotes qualifying them were not present. "Law" as such didn't exist in the Soviet Union and neither did their "Bill of Rights" ever mean anything either. "Rule of Law" cannot occur unless it based on hard firm cultural underpinnings- like hundreds of years of collective and slow experience with it- and it also cannot exist without private property and a non state controlled economy- even in a country grounded in "rule of law" history. The Soviet Union had neither the history or private property or free economy. Their "Rights" never meant a damn thing. That is why I marveled at how "conservatives" were cheering and acting like giddy school girls when Iraq's Quisling governmnet "ratified" their "constitution" tucked safely behind blast walls in the green zone. Wow? That simple huh? Just write down some "rights" on a piece of paper and Voila! Freedom! So incredibly ignorant. I now realize that most of these GOPER BOT's have zero concept of what intellecual conservatism is all about and are just nationalists and fascists of the crudest most ignorant sort.

I'm wondering whether the Northwood plans as they emerged from the Joint Chiefs of Staff were deliberately made so outrageous that disapproval by McNamara and/or JFK was assured.

This is a perfect example of how the habits of empire come home to roost. When you corrupt your military and intelligence services by tasking them to carry out all manner of subterfuge, black ops, murder, and mayhem in foreign countries- to the point where such amoral acts and deeds become second nature and the sort of people needed to carry them out- sociopaths and sadists- rise to the top- it is only a matter of time before they begin to apply these lovely habits in domestic politics. The border of the US isn't a magical border. A tightly knit team of CIA black bag murderers and tricksters isn't going to simply start behaving once they fly back home. When they use murder and dirty tricks abroad to advance "interests" and do it all for 75 grand a year- they begin to choke on the mountains of hypocrisy that seperate public feel good rhetoric from their down in the trenches ugly reality. They begin to despise the people they "serve" (the American people) and see them the same way they see the dirt people they abuse and murder in third world hell holes. Thus it becomes possible to consider murdering Americans to justify this or that policy or to start a war. They just write it off as they write off their routine acts of evil in foreign countries - as "regretable- but necessary and for the 'greater good'".
