MADRID (AFP) - Excessively skinny fashion models will be barred from a major Madrid fashion show later this month for fear they could send the wrong message to young Spanish girls, local media reported.

Madrid's regional government, which is co-financing the Pasarela Cibeles, has vetoed around a third of the models who took part in last year's show because they weigh too little.

The authorities collaborated with a Spanish health organisation to come up with a minumum body mass -- a height-weight ratio -- of 18 for the models.

Spanish daily ABC said it was the first time such restrictions had been imposed on a fashion show, although a recent wedding dress exhibition in Barcelona banned fashion models who took a dress size below 38 (British size 10, US size eight).

Several models at last year's show provoked a row when they claimed their careers would be under threat if they put on weight.

Organisers said they wanted to "help ensure public opinion does not associate fashion, and fashion shows in particular, with an increase in anorexia, a disease which, along with bulimia, is considered ... as a mental and behavioural problem".

The event will take place on September 18-22.

While I in no way agree that it is the government's place to decide these issues and that this is wholly preposterous- I have never felt fashion models were attractive in the slightest precisely because they look freakishly thin.

If I had to theorize on why it seems to be a prerequisite for fashion models to be thin to the point of appearing unhealthy- I half suspect it is because the fashion industry is controlled by homosexuals who have a warped vision of female beauty and perhaps even a deep seeded hatred of women and they delight in torturing them by demanding such unhealthy and dangerous weights.

Well, you wanted an example of what makes one "American." Here you are. The whole negative cloth sizes, barf after every meal, everone whose weight is past the double digits is an obese tub of lard trend is a purely US invention. I've spoken to Frenchmen, Italians, Russians, and Mexicans and they all think we're crazy when it comes to weight.

I mean a "minumum body mass" requirment? An American doctor would rather eat a gun that dare suggest that a little extra weight is healthy.

Maybe among the upper middle class and some segments of the middle class in this country weight loss is an obsession- everyone certainly talks about it constantly- diet fads, diet foods, pills, miracle exercise routines- tapes- the weight loss industry in America has gotta be several dozen billion a year at least. But yet- travel to Europe and compare and contrast. Americans ARE fat tubs of goo in comparison. And it is not like Europeans are really thin- they are normal sized. I spent a few months in Germany and Switzerland last year and I had to LOOK HARD to find a fat person- old, middle age, young- I think I saw one old fat lady once. Come home to merica - and it is shambling mounds of fat goo everywhere! I am not talking about just a few pounds overweight and a little chin fat- I am talking- have trouble walking sorta fat. I am talking teenager girls who are 30 or 40 pounds overweight type of fat. You just don't see that in the rest of the world.

Our industrial food complex is to blame. Read a health site recently of a guy who struggled to lose weight. Started at 280, and was able to drop to 260 but no more. Long story short, he found success when he learned that his body had toxins in it and was storing it in fat as a defensive measure. Claims his body wouldn't let him lose weight for it's own good. Once he started physical detox, he claims the weight came off steadily and easily and without starving.

In Ecuador, in the coastal areas, obese people are reasonably rare but "chubby" people are common. I think it's because rice and beans are a major staple with very few veggies & comparitively little meat thrown in. In the mountains it's a bit more balanced a diet and I think the people are generally better off weight-wise.

As I gave up the booze a couple years back I have come to appreciate food far more than I did. Not quantity- but quality. I eat far better than I did while sucking down the scotch and bourbon. I can really taste the difference between organically grown produce and free range chicken and naturally raised beef for example. I mean- night and day. I am not some freak who thinks that pesticides or chemical fertilizers are evil or anything like that- I realize that they increase yields on less land and so on and so on . . . but from a simple taste perspective- the natural stuff is just far superior. More expensive yes- but better in every way. Maybe the chemical and pesticide grown carrot "looks" better- as in bigger - but it doesn't have half the taste of an organic carrot. I find that to be true across the board. The non natural grown food and meats- look bigger and better- but taste like shit. The best orange I ever had in my life was from an organic farm in Florida that looked smaller and not as "orange"- but packed with taste- whereas your typical chemically produced orange the size of a grapefruit- seems to be all water with a hint of orange flavoring.

I can't eat the crap I used to like frozen foods and microwave meals. I get sick just smelling such crap.

Not a raisin fan. Off topic- I grew up hating rice. Never liked rice at all. Then I got a Japanese sister in law and she buys only Japanese rice. Night and day between American grown rice and Japanese rice. Its like two different foods entirely. I won't eat any domestic rice. Love the Japanese stuff.

Japanese rice.

Jasmine rice. You should try basmati, the type they use in India. Costs 3 times as much as domestic long grain, but I buy it anyway. The best, IMO. It has a delightful aroma. It's also my daughter's favorite.

You've got to try Lundberg's organic rice. Many varieties to choose from. I like the short grain brown rice and one of their blends which is all sorts of colors thrown together. I think it is the Wild Blend.
