I found this amusing.

I ran into a friend of mine last night. He's a local cop and great guy. We talk politics and history from time to time. At one point in the discussion I said to him, "I like you and all, but I don't want the police state that seems to be coming." He replied, "No offense taken. I don't need the overtime."

"No offense taken. I don't need the overtime."

Does this mean that he's up to speed on things?

Mostly. He's old school and has witnessed the rise of the paramilitary thugs being hired as of late.

The difference in what cops did back then, to now is astounding. Mine is a family of cops, and to a person we now despise them. That's about the only thing we agree on :)

Good.

If he's like the LEO's that I know, he's just trying to make retirement and head off to his place in the country.

The reason I respect this cop is that he's a peace officer, not an LEO. Huge difference.

he's just trying to make retirement and head off to his place in the country.

So you know him? ; )

Rather than pretending it doesn't exist, they should be speaking out about what is going on, since they know it from the inside. By skating along until retirment, they are as responsible for the police state as the paramilitary thugs.

Excellent point - my bad.

There are lots of cops retiring here in the CenTex, especially Llano County, possibly the least "diverse" county in the entire state. Lots of fire-power there.

Cops should wait until they're gone from the force before they speak out. It's a fool's mission otherwise.

Yes, but that's a tough call at that stage of life, from a strictly financial point of view.

The system does not reward speaking out...

You should ask him what experience he has with Fed police agencies and what the relationship of his local force is to the Feds. I hope there is resentment and tension over the usurptation of power between locals and feds. But I fear that the situation is such that local police management is co-opted by the Feds and that they subordinate themselves to the Feds willingly in hopes of being tapped for career advancement into the Fed ranks.

I already have. The local cops have gotten announcements, but he's never had any Fed 'training' himself. He's also reluctant to say much more about it for the obvious reasons.

What worries me (and this cop) more about my local police force is that of ~125 cops, less than a third are from here. There's been an unwritten policy for the past 10 years or so to replace local retiring cops and new positions with outside help. It's the old Bolshevik tactic of using foreign troops to keep an eye on the locals.

I figured that would be the response.

No. In this case, better a live dog than a dead lion.

From what I know of cops, I wouldn't waste my time or effort. Please stop the missionary work, it's useless. Assume they are enemy and you'll do fine.
