The September Italian edition of Vogue takes a photographic swipe at the current culture of fear. Vogue Italia photographer Steven Meisel puts a bevy of beauties through extreme — and somewhat sexy — arrests, strip searches and security checks. Meisel has his models pinned to the ground, barked at by German Shepherds, stomped on, and generally manhandled by macho cops in riot gear. The fashion spread, which goes under the English title of "State of Emergency", sees heavily armed police in anti-terror garb detaining glamorous 'terror suspects' wearing stunning outfits by top designers — including Versace, Dolce & Gabbana and Valentino. One image shows a model in a little black dress nabbed by security guards on a plane. The model, who doesn’t have a hair out of place, has her body draped across a row of seats while she is man-handled by security. Another black-clad clothes-horse is shown at an airport, hands behind her head, knees on the ground, her passport and sunglasses strewn around her. An aggressive guard dog assists two faceless policemen. In yet another provocative image, the long arm of the law literally reaches up under a model's dress as she's held against a police car. Meisel, an American, is well known for photographing his mate Madonna for her 1992 coffee-table tome, Sex. He is also reported to have discovered supermodel Linda Evangelista, among others, and has a reputation for making satirical social statements with his images. RELATED LINKS
