Title: Military Wants to Use Microwave Weapons on American Crowds

Ghandi and Martin Luther King, Jr., won epic struggles through non-violence. The Republicans have what they think is an improvement. The Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne now advocates:

Nonlethal weapons such as high-power microwave devices should be used on American citizens in crowd-control situations before they are used on the battlefield, the Air Force secretary said Tuesday.

Domestic use would make it easier to avoid questions in the international community over any possible safety concerns, said Secretary Michael Wynne.

Yes, American citizens should now be subject to new, unsafe weapons, in service of the Bush administration's imperial ambitions.

But what are these weapons anyway? According to New Scientist, the weapon causes "intolerable" pain within 5 seconds. And how safe is it?

VOLUNTEERS taking part in tests of the Pentagon's "less-lethal" microwave weapon were banned from wearing glasses or contact lenses due to safety fears. The precautions raise concerns about how safe the Active Denial System (ADS) weapon would be if used in real crowd-control situations.

The ADS fires a 95-gigahertz microwave beam, which is supposed to heat skin and to cause pain but no physical damage (New Scientist, 27 October 2001, p 26).

But have no fear, here is the air force's plans for preventing vicious burns:

People's reflex responses to the pain is expected to force them to move out of the beam before their skin can be burnt.

Okay, let me the first to say it. There is no need to use this in the US -- and who would be the targets? Two bets: liberal protesters and minorities. And there's no need for it anywhere else. This is a cruel weapon that will cause disaster for our international reputation.

Active Denial System (ADS)

Wasn't that what the administration used when questioned about the existence of secret CIA prisons?

I can tell you they do work to develop tactics and doctrine for dealing with dissent, legal and illegal. I have seen them drench people in capsium in tree sits and shoot them with 'non-lethal' bullets to break up lock downs in intersections here in Eugene and Portland.

They have the budget now for that which works in a coordinated way with the military and other law enforcement agencies and they have monies for lots of new, neat equipment too.

It doesn't make me feel any safer to know the police can break up and disrupt gatherings of people. Quite the contrary, I feel much less safe.

How often does a crowd of people gather outside your house to protest your family's foreign policy? Crowds are a threat only to the gummint.

How often are you robbed? Every quarter, by the gummint. How often, by an armed band of robbers (excluding the gummint)? It hasn't happened to me yet. If and when it does, the robbers probably won't return again and again, like clockwork.
