Title: Military Wants to Use Microwave Weapons on American Crowds

Ghandi and Martin Luther King, Jr., won epic struggles through non-violence. The Republicans have what they think is an improvement. The Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne now advocates:

Nonlethal weapons such as high-power microwave devices should be used on American citizens in crowd-control situations before they are used on the battlefield, the Air Force secretary said Tuesday.

Domestic use would make it easier to avoid questions in the international community over any possible safety concerns, said Secretary Michael Wynne.

Yes, American citizens should now be subject to new, unsafe weapons, in service of the Bush administration's imperial ambitions.

But what are these weapons anyway? According to New Scientist, the weapon causes "intolerable" pain within 5 seconds. And how safe is it?

VOLUNTEERS taking part in tests of the Pentagon's "less-lethal" microwave weapon were banned from wearing glasses or contact lenses due to safety fears. The precautions raise concerns about how safe the Active Denial System (ADS) weapon would be if used in real crowd-control situations.

The ADS fires a 95-gigahertz microwave beam, which is supposed to heat skin and to cause pain but no physical damage (New Scientist, 27 October 2001, p 26).

But have no fear, here is the air force's plans for preventing vicious burns:

People's reflex responses to the pain is expected to force them to move out of the beam before their skin can be burnt.

Okay, let me the first to say it. There is no need to use this in the US -- and who would be the targets? Two bets: liberal protesters and minorities. And there's no need for it anywhere else. This is a cruel weapon that will cause disaster for our international reputation.

Whose Air Force and who the hell is Secretary Michael Wynne.

You realize he's saying he fears the international courts over domestic.

They should both volunteer to be guinea pigs in place of anyone else.

"Disgusting.."

I'll give currency to the notion it's harmless when laura uses it to keep George out of the liquor cabinet. Even then I would doubt it was safe.

The Republicans have what they think is an improvement. The Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne now advocates:

I wasn't aware that the military was an official arm of the Republican Party. I thought it was the Military of the United States.

Did DailyKos pull the Secretary's voter registration to get this information or is it just an assumption?

Well, going microwave on the American public will certainly take the RAH, from Ooh-rah. Damn, where are they going to get soldiers from then? Home Depot?

This just reveals so much now doesnt it? Some animals ARE more equal.. right out of the neocon playbook..Straussarian thought..

Of course they are! Look at our books since 911, no-way can the military industrial complex continue to suck to suck the lifesblood out of this country at this rate without the rubes wising up sooner or later.

And this is what should happen to the stormtrooper manning such a weapon against unarmed protesters:

Active Denial System (ADS)

Wasn't that what the administration used when questioned about the existence of secret CIA prisons?

I can tell you they do work to develop tactics and doctrine for dealing with dissent, legal and illegal. I have seen them drench people in capsium in tree sits and shoot them with 'non-lethal' bullets to break up lock downs in intersections here in Eugene and Portland.

They have the budget now for that which works in a coordinated way with the military and other law enforcement agencies and they have monies for lots of new, neat equipment too.

It doesn't make me feel any safer to know the police can break up and disrupt gatherings of people. Quite the contrary, I feel much less safe.

Ummmmmm... wouldn't you want to test this on some criminal population uprising, oh say, at the border as they sneak across? Or in the case of gang riots in a prison setting? Or in a dozen other circumstances other than legal gatherings of citizens?? Or are legal citizens just easier prey? How about a PTA meeting?? Or on cub scouts?? Maybe at a Yale Football game? I mean just for fun to break up some legal American liberty. How about using it at the Oscars? That'd be a riot eh? I know, how about testing it on the Veterans in the Veterans Day parade?? The next American Legion event would be a real hoot then.

If we were really at war, the borders would be closed.

There is no weapon that will remain exclusively in the hands of the police or military for too long. When ordinary criminals and citizens get these weapons then crowd control will be the least of their worries. There is a reason the elite have always fallen despite however powerful they have been in the past; they lose their freaking minds. God’s vengeance is sweet indeed.

God is always good!

Terrorists around the world already have the technology and are developing it. China's engineers are killing our engineers. I've read it in several publications.

"It is a rat race. United States trying to develop microwave weapons to deter terrorists with a minimum of casualties, and terrorist nations-Cuba, North Korea, Iran, and CHINA- trying to develop microwave weapons to disrupt communications in the United States."

It doesn't make me feel any safer to know the police can break up and disrupt gatherings of people.

How often does a crowd of people gather outside your house to protest your family's foreign policy? Crowds are a threat only to the gummint.

How often are you robbed? Every quarter, by the gummint. How often, by an armed band of robbers (excluding the gummint)? It hasn't happened to me yet. If and when it does, the robbers probably won't return again and again, like clockwork.

Another evil thing about this weapon is it opens the culture to things I learned you could do to microwave ovens that can create extreme hazards if you don't like someone.

There is also the assumption people CAN get away if in pain. Crowds don't move fast, and panicked, stampeding crowds of pain afflicted people can be congested and have many people stomped to death.

This weapon is evil and wrong, and it creates new problems for them because how it notches up the stakes and changes the nature of the conflict.

Reminds me of a brilliant FarSide cartoon, drawn from a perspective just below two ants, who are gazing at one another, unaware of the goofy giant gap- toothed freckled kid above them, with the huge magnifying glass, training a focused beam of sunlight on the back of one of the ants, who is heard to exclaim, "Hey, now I'm feeling hot!"
