Monday September 18, 2006 Guardian Having just stirred up a global storm by quoting from a text fiercely critical of Islam, it might have been expected that Pope Benedict would steer well away from anything alluding to another religion that could be open to misinterpretation. Yet only minutes after saying that he was "deeply sorry" about the reaction to his earlier remarks, he cited a passage from the New Testament highlighting the gulf between Christian and Jewish attitudes to the crucifixion of Jesus. He said that, before leading the crowd in the traditional midday prayer known as the Angelus, he wanted to comment on two recent Roman Catholic festivals relating to the crucifixion. What, the Pope asked, was the point of exalting the cross - a tool of execution? In reply to his rhetorical question, he quoted a verse from St Paul, the New Testament author most often accused of anti-semitism. In the Italian translation, used by the Pope, it runs as follows: "We preach the crucified Christ - a scandal for the Jews, a folly for the pagans". English translations of the verse, which occurs in St Paul's first letter to the Corinthians, put it slightly differently. The full passage in the Revised English Bible of 1989 has: "We proclaim Christ nailed to the cross; and though this is an offence to Jews and folly to Gentiles, yet to those who are called, Jews and Greeks alike, he is the power and wisdom of God." Jewish representatives yesterday expressed surprise at the latest incursion into sensitive territory. One, who asked not to be identified, said: "It does seem strange to come up with that particular quote at this particular time." Rabbi Dr Jonathan Romain, a member of the board of the Council of Christians and Jews, a group set up to oppose prejudice between different religions and races, said: "He's really talking about veneration, not about the Jews. "We can't alter the sayings of the past. But we can be careful about how we use them, especially in view of the religious offence that can be taken, even if never intended. The Pope has every right to quote his own holy texts, but it may be unwise in the current climate to choose those which relate to other faiths. "However, it is especially important that anyone who does protest does so verbally, not physically, otherwise they put themselves even more at fault."

King James Version: For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Note that the Judaized press barely touched this story but it went nuts when the Pope previously quoted a Byzantine emperor criticizing Islam. I wonder if this wasn't a ploy on the Pope's part to make a statement about what the media does and doesn't report, or maybe even who's got the squeeze on the media in the "West"?
A bunch of demons getting pissed off about Bible verses being spoken to the masses is not exactly news. They have many reasons to target the Vatican. The most important one is the Vatican's condemnation of their genocide attempt in Lebanon this summer. Alex Jones is predicting another terror attack in America this month. IMO he is right about another terror attack occurring this month, but not in America. I think Rome will be the target. What better way to get the Christians of America and the world on their side against their neighbors than to attack the Vatican and blame Arab Muslims?
God is always good! I think the Pope should mud wrestle Moshe Katsav on a special Survivor episode. If he loses, then the Catholics get blamed for the crucifixion.
Should have thought of that when the previous pope was younger, he was strong and athletic.
