The NY Post: "POWDER PUFF SPOOKS KEITH" Keith Olbermann flipped out when he opened his home mail yesterday. The acerbic host of "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" was terrified when he opened a suspicious-looking letter with a California postmark and a batch of white powder poured out. A note inside warned Olbermann, who’s a frequent critic of President Bush’s policies, that it was payback for some of his on-air shtick. The caustic commentator panicked and frantically called 911 at about 12:30 a.m., sources told The Post’s Philip Messing. An NYPD HazMat unit rushed to Olbermann’s pad on Central Park South, but preliminary tests indicated the substance was harmless soap powder. However, that wasn’t enough to satisfy Olbermann, who insisted on a checkup. He asked to be taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, where doctors looked him over and sent him home. Whether they gave him a lollipop on the way out isn’t known. Olbermann had no comment. You can be sure that it would be front page news for The Post with pictures of Limbaugh going to the hospital–including interviews with the police and anyone one else they could find to make a statement. Then there would be a tidal wave on FOX News–you know the drill. This is a new low for the right wing media of this country. Since Keith didn’t go public with the story, obviously he was doing what the police wanted and made sure not to cause a scene. He took the correct measures to ensure his safety as anyone of us would. It’s an outrage that in these times, a public figure would get a threatening letter and take it seriously, and then the right wing media would make a joke of it. Paula Froelich only serves to encourage the wackos on so that they’ll continue this behavior. What a total disgrace. The guy said that "everyone in the MSM deserves" an anthrax letter. My espoused creed, whatever that might be, doesn't allow for me giving that kind of statement a pass. While you are correct that the poster did not say "You, Bluedogtxn, deserve an anthrax letter"; it was an endorsement of anonymous thuggery and the suppression of political dissent. You say that kind of thing in front of me and you are going to get spanked, to the extent I can let fly. Respecting a person and loving a person does not mean not rebuking him; in the strongest terms if necessary. You may disagree that strong terms were called for, but that's an opinion we're going to have to split on. I wish Angelspawn nothing but peace, the same as I wish on anyone, but that doesn't mean I play nicey nicey in the face of an outrageous comment. I live by my own rules, too, to the extent I have them. You get nasty/personal with me and I won't go running to no moderator (and I never have), but I won't sit there silent, either. I guess I missed where you asked me that question. Seems to me you pretty much limit the pool of folks "qualified" to respond to people who were alive and cogent during the 30s and 40s. That's a pretty narrow pool, and as I wasn't alive yet (and had another 30 years to go before I would be) I'm not in it. I recognize that you are well-aged and have mucho experience; but I suspect that even your cognitive and analytical functions were not fully engaged during the 30s and 40s; and aside from that, just how well did you know Murrow? You heard him on the radio, or was he a buddy? Even those of us born too late to have heard him live can listen to a tape or watch a movie. Aside from that, we're talking about Olbermann, not Murrow. I never said he was Murrow. I recognize that his "good night and good luck" is a tip of the hat to Murrow. I also recognize that at least in this moment he is telling the truth. If you pay attention to the media these days, you start to recognize that is a thing both rare and transient, so you ought to pay attention.

No you wouldn't. Get real. You have had many opportunities to do this. You have NEVER availed yourself to them. On each occasion you have chosen the disinfo tactic of attacking the messenger. You then whine like you do above when called on it. Use the search function on Obermann's name if you don't believe me. I did.

Tip of the hat??? It would be nice if that were his only intent. Olbermann or someone is trying to mold him into a modern day version of Murrow, not just a hat tipping. Even his tone of voice and delivery has been couched to be Murrow. It is a MSM effort to subtlety sway opinion and the masses accept it. I agree with the message, what he says, just stop leaning on Murrow to prop up the credibility. As for his Murrow quotes, there is a college link that has the quotes and Olbermann started at the top of the list. I never liked Murrow because he led the fight to destroy McCarthy and at the time many in government knew McCarthy was right and Murrow was leading the communist offensive.

Unsupported attack on the messenge. Just do a search on Obermann's name. You are always there. I have also seen you called on this tactic in the past. It didn't work before, it doesnt' work now and it won't work in the future. If you disagree with Obermann's message, tell us why and support your argument. Reading comprehension is a great attribute. I might suggest you start on post 1 til now and see how many times I have said I agree with what he "SAYS". I do not like Olbermann.

Back when I was causing the bots real headaches on TOS2, I got a letter in the mail with a note that read, "Time for you to die, devil man." And since it showed up at my public address from my website, I figure it was a Zionist shill or one of the other bots who was responsible. No white powder in the envelope, though. (I know if the culprit is reading this, as they often monitor our site, I'm sure he, she, or it, is having a chuckle over finally finding out that I was not in the least perplexed by such childish behavior.) Now, I may have had a lady or two call me a "devil" while we were contemplating the events which may have just transpired, but that is the only time I suspect a bot of calling me anything similar, though they have tried their best to label me all sorts of malicious things in the past. Just goes to show what happens when you don't let up. ;0)

Olbermann had a reply to all this on his show tonight, pointing out that the FBI and local cops had told him to keep his mouth shut so they could trace this asshat and Rupert's minions just went and blew it. They probably sympathize with terrorism, as long as the terrorists are regular Fox viewers. As for Cynicom or whatever his name is, seems like he learned at the feet of the master, Badeye.

Cynicom says - I am a young-un of 52, I would never have known about Edward R. Murrow without having taken a class about mass media at the University of Oregon. He was talked about in other things I studied, but seriously dude, not many today remember this media star of a newsman. He reminds me of Murrow too, but many in his audience probably think an old timer is someone who remembers Walter Cronkite, Art Buchwald, Jack Anderson, Howard K. Smith and other newsmen and commentates of the 60s and early 70s. Just a reality check and a comment, I am not here attacking you by the way. My favorite was Walter Cronkite, I really miss him but am glad he's still alive. I also like Dan Rather too, but you know my political mindset enough to know that is not hard to believe. I know all the criticisms of him and you know what? I like him as a human being, and I don't care if he's pissed the Bushbots off. Just a reality check to show you preferences for newsmen and woman is a capricious thing even under the best circumstances.

Mike... Many times you make a lot of sense for such a young person (LOL)that displays honesty and thinking. That I like. Walter Winchell was the first I recall that realized that news "delivery" was actually more important than the text. Being only on radio, he learned the mastery of voice inflection, the pregnant pause etc. News reading became a professional art. Winchell even added the gimmick of Morse code and the false term of "flash". Then along comes Murrow, much a copy cat in delivery, that made the transition from radio to TV. Murrow was totally humorless and was self assured that if the world were to end, he would be on hand to describe it.

Back in 2001, anthrax letters were sent to various figures in the press, as well as to members of Congress. (Most of the letters sent to the press didn't contain real anthrax, but obviously the one sent to photographer Robert Stevens did, because he died.) I wonder if those earlier letters were meant to intimidate the media.
