WASHINGTON Sep 29, 2006 (AP)— Rep. Mark Foley, R-Fla., submitted a letter of resignation from Congress on Friday in the wake of questions about e-mails he wrote a former male page, according to a congressional official.

Foley, 52, had been considered a shoo-in for re-election until the e-mails surfaced in recent days.

Campaign aides had previously acknowledged that the Republican congressman e-mailed the former Capitol page five times, but had said there was nothing inappropriate about the exchange. The page was 16 at the time of the e-mail correspondence.

Foley's election opponent, Democrat Tim Mahoney, has called for an investigation.

16 years old? Well the guy's a fruit and he might like them a bit young, but a 16 year old does not qualify one as a pedophile. In fact it's legal in many states and it's marrying age in most. It was an abuse of a position of power and that makes him a predator, but not the age of the complainant.

Seriously, I think you're right. I would definitely be checking his crawl spaces and storage facilities. You don't know how far someone like this is liable to go - or his BUDS because these guys usually have gangs that engage in this stuff.

I don't know about that, but definitely worth checking his hard drive for kiddie porn.

you make some good points.

but there's a guy who lives in my condo complex who is listed as a sex offender by the state-run web-site at age 30 because when he was 21 he had sex with his 16 year old girlfriend.

and there's american men who have been under 25 years old and sold photos of 16 year old teen girls wearing underwear by undercover cops, and they buy the photos and they're nailed for child pornography and sent to jail. that actually happened in our country.

And he was the Chairman on the Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus. Plus he is the GOP representative for a state with a lot of missing children from its state foster care program.

it's probably 16 if the partner is only a few years older and 18 for others. that's the way it usually is.

So you did, sorry.

I still disagree with you about 16. It's too young to make a decision like this, one that could lead to a permanent lifestyle choice too. As Red pointed out, if it's a 16 and 17 year old girl and boy, that's different. But he's too young for the pressure brought to bear by an older man; especially, as you point out in this abuse of power.

It's not just about having sex with someone who may or may not be legal. It's about lying to US, it's about using his power to gain advantage over potential partners - some of whom maybe UNDER age, we don't know - it's about pretending to be something he's not, it's about voting for torture and destroying civil liberties while pretending to be a decent American. This guy is a piece of garbage. This whole lifestyle of preying on teenagers - boys or girls is DISGUSTING and should be prosecuted SEVERELY. I would bury this bastard UNDER the jail.

It's too young to make a decision like this, one that could lead to a permanent lifestyle decistion too.

We try them as adults and they can get married and drive. I think what the Congressman did was deplorable, but I'm just pointing out the schizophrenic nature of our laws and how there is no common thread between what ages are considered "adult" in different circumstances.

In Mississippi a 15 year old female can get married but a male must be 17. In some states the marrying age has no minimum threshold if the female is pregnant. And in yet other states, you can marry a 15 year old girl and legally have sex with her, but you'll go to prison for 20 years if you take a nude picture of her. Very odd.

I think the point is that pedophiles are attracted to the physically immature, like a 5 or 6 year old. A 16 year old is probably physically mature. While the guy is queer that likes them young, I don't think he qualifies as a pedophile.

I read about cases in California where undercover US federal agents hired teen girls aged 14-16 to take their clothes off for the camera. then they took the pictures and showed them to young men in early 20's and enticed the young men to buy copies. These were young men who did not seek these things, but the undercover agent sought them. and then the young men were busted for child pornography. and they went to jail for about 20 years. that does seem kind of schitzophrenic to me.

I think it is an evil agenda though myself. I think 99% of our people would never set policy to be so stupid and so bad. But thepeople who rule us have an evil agenda - and they impose these INSANE agendas.

Interesting and a little surprising.

I thought regardless of one's party loyalties, when child abuse/porn issues are under discussion, there would be nothing but contempt expressed about the guilty ( accused)adult figure.

I assumed child abuse trumped party loyalty, but I guess I made a passe "old world" values based assumption.

I guess I was just shaking my head( figuratively)with surprise and sadness (and disgust) about how normal peoples' values have been corrupted over the years - now it's all about winning or not getting caught whether it's in business, in politics, or in sports whatever...there does not seem to be any more commonly understood lines of morality, ethics that must not be crossed by human behavior.

I don't want a Federal minimum age either. It's not necessary. I see the current hodgepodge of laws as a result of replacing common law crimes with statute. That's why they call it "statutory rape". It's something created by arbitrary political edict.

A common law rape has three elements:

A) Was the alleged victim capable of granting consent

B) Was consent granted.

C) mens rea (guilty mind or intent).

It takes into consideration situational conditions and what is "generally accepted by a reasonable person" and allows for juries and judges to exercise common sense. None of this is allowed in statutory crimes.

Isn't it nice how our masters don't have to follow the same laws as us when "pursuing their legal duties"? It's the same as the undercover cop who makes multiple drug purchases and is exempted. It's not a matter of the officer incidentally coming into contact with contraband in the line of duty in order to capture it for evidence, but of someone intentionally seeking out the contraband in a manner that would send anyone of us to the clink.

Looks like his name will stay on the ballot:

Florida Elections Law:

(4)(a) In the event that death, resignation, withdrawal, removal, or any other cause or event should cause a party to have a vacancy in nomination which leaves no candidate for an office from such party, the Department of State shall notify the chair of the appropriate state, district, or county political party executive committee of such party; and, within 5 days, the chair shall call a meeting of his or her executive committee to consider designation of a nominee to fill the vacancy. The name of any person so designated shall be submitted to the Department of State within 7 days after notice to the chair in order that the person designated may have his or her name on the ballot of the ensuing general election. If the name of the new nominee is submitted after the certification of results of the preceding primary election, however, the ballots shall not be changed and the former party nominee's name will appear on the ballot. Any ballots cast for the former party nominee will be counted for the person designated by the political party to replace the former party nominee.
