WASHINGTON Sep 29, 2006 (AP)— Rep. Mark Foley, R-Fla., submitted a letter of resignation from Congress on Friday in the wake of questions about e-mails he wrote a former male page, according to a congressional official.

Foley, 52, had been considered a shoo-in for re-election until the e-mails surfaced in recent days.

Campaign aides had previously acknowledged that the Republican congressman e-mailed the former Capitol page five times, but had said there was nothing inappropriate about the exchange. The page was 16 at the time of the e-mail correspondence.

Foley's election opponent, Democrat Tim Mahoney, has called for an investigation.

16 years old? Well the guy's a fruit and he might like them a bit young, but a 16 year old does not qualify one as a pedophile. In fact it's legal in many states and it's marrying age in most. It was an abuse of a position of power and that makes him a predator, but not the age of the complainant.

You forgot about the difference in his position as well. He's not just any older man looking for any 16 year old.

And he was the Chairman on the Missing and Exploited Children's Caucus. Plus he is the GOP representative for a state with a lot of missing children from its state foster care program.

So you did, sorry.

I still disagree with you about 16. It's too young to make a decision like this, one that could lead to a permanent lifestyle choice too. As Red pointed out, if it's a 16 and 17 year old girl and boy, that's different. But he's too young for the pressure brought to bear by an older man; especially, as you point out in this abuse of power.

I took a peek at Unfree Republic to see what the schmucks were saying. Seems like half of them are lamenting that this guy got caught while "the Kennedys get away with it". In order words, they don't care at all, about what he's actually done, or may have done, or about his abuses of power - they just care that THEIR guy got caught. What rancid low life scum!!!!!

Interesting and a little surprising.

I thought regardless of one's party loyalties, when child abuse/porn issues are under discussion, there would be nothing but contempt expressed about the guilty ( accused)adult figure.

I assumed child abuse trumped party loyalty, but I guess I made a passe "old world" values based assumption.

Well those were the first page or two of views I saw - the first reactions. Possibly some more normal people have posted by now, but I'm not sure there are any left there. I suspect that FR is just some computer somewhere spitting out random posts based on the keywords....
