WASHINGTON Sep 29, 2006 (AP)— Rep. Mark Foley, R-Fla., submitted a letter of resignation from Congress on Friday in the wake of questions about e-mails he wrote a former male page, according to a congressional official. Foley, 52, had been considered a shoo-in for re-election until the e-mails surfaced in recent days. Campaign aides had previously acknowledged that the Republican congressman e-mailed the former Capitol page five times, but had said there was nothing inappropriate about the exchange. The page was 16 at the time of the e-mail correspondence. Foley's election opponent, Democrat Tim Mahoney, has called for an investigation.

Hours earlier, ABC News had read excerpts of instant messages provided by former male pages who said the congressman, under the AOL Instant Messenger screen name Maf54, made repeated references to sexual organs and acts. In a statement, Foley said, "I am deeply sorry and I apologize for letting down my family and the people of Florida I have had the privilege to represent." The full details will be included in a report tonight on ABC World News with Charles Gibson. Being an intern or page in D.C. must be a very high risk job!

From the perspective of DC insiders- it is in their interests to have Congressmen elected who come with steamer trunk closets full of skeletons. In fact, during the vetting process (usually the minor leagues of state politics) I wouldn't be surprised if the biggest pervs and morally suspect individuals are tapped to rise to the major's.

A quick perusal of Foley's record seems to indicate he was a lockstepper GOPER. It seems he was talking about the "improvements" in Iraq a few weeks back. As cyncial as I am I don't believe any revalation in our media about the perv acts and proclivities of our useless congressmen is by chance or happenstance or the result of two party fraud partisan politics. I recall some speculation that the elite don't allow these people to advance into powerful positions unless they have the goods on them. That way the elite are able to press their agendas without encountering any significant obstacles.
