WASHINGTON Sep 29, 2006 (AP)— Rep. Mark Foley, R-Fla., submitted a letter of resignation from Congress on Friday in the wake of questions about e-mails he wrote a former male page, according to a congressional official.

Foley, 52, had been considered a shoo-in for re-election until the e-mails surfaced in recent days.

Campaign aides had previously acknowledged that the Republican congressman e-mailed the former Capitol page five times, but had said there was nothing inappropriate about the exchange. The page was 16 at the time of the e-mail correspondence.

Foley's election opponent, Democrat Tim Mahoney, has called for an investigation.

So, there must be more to this story, no one resigns over a bit of slander.

Probably wanted to avoid anyone digging into his activities. This page was very very likely not his first.

Not only that, I wonder how many of these pedophiles are walking the halls of Congress under the guise of being respectable humans.

But these are the ones an evil govt wants there, the ones they can blackmail.

I'd be willing to bet at least 50% of the Dems and 80% or more of the Repubs are pervs of one kind of another, or have some kind of skeleton in their closet. When you think that to achieve these positions you have to have massive egos, gather unbelievable amounts of money, and lie like devils constantly - well, they can't be normal folks. Normal people work for a living, the rest of them become criminals or politicians.

More on this story from ABC's Brian Ross:

Saying he was "deeply sorry," Congressman Mark Foley (R-FL) resigned from Congress today, hours after ABC News questioned him about sexually explicit internet messages with current and former congressional pages under the age of 18.

A spokesman for Foley, the chairman of the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children, said the congressman submitted his resignation in a letter late this afternoon to Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert.

Hours earlier, ABC News had read excerpts of instant messages provided by former male pages who said the congressman, under the AOL Instant Messenger screen name Maf54, made repeated references to sexual organs and acts.

In a statement, Foley said, "I am deeply sorry and I apologize for letting down my family and the people of Florida I have had the privilege to represent."

The full details will be included in a report tonight on ABC World News with Charles Gibson.

From the perspective of DC insiders- it is in their interests to have Congressmen elected who come with steamer trunk closets full of skeletons. In fact, during the vetting process (usually the minor leagues of state politics) I wouldn't be surprised if the biggest pervs and morally suspect individuals are tapped to rise to the major's.

Foley, the chairman of the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children,

Name a Democrat who must lie about his/her sexual orientation or proclivities to get elected? And then, name one who would be allowed as chairman of the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children,

This is the tip of a very big iceberg, IMO. Human trafficking, etc.

A quick perusal of Foley's record seems to indicate he was a lockstepper GOPER. It seems he was talking about the "improvements" in Iraq a few weeks back.

As cyncial as I am I don't believe any revalation in our media about the perv acts and proclivities of our useless congressmen is by chance or happenstance or the result of two party fraud partisan politics.

My first question in these cases is what DC insider faction did he piss off and over what? And I am not talking about his silly opponent either.

I clipped this from another forum. I assume the primary results have been certified.

Florida Election Law (about replacement)

(4)(a) In the event that death, resignation, withdrawal, removal, or any other cause or event should cause a party to have a vacancy in nomination which leaves no candidate for an office from such party, the Department of State shall notify the chair of the appropriate state, district, or county political party executive committee of such party; and, within 5 days, the chair shall call a meeting of his or her executive committee to consider designation of a nominee to fill the vacancy.

The name of any person so designated shall be submitted to the Department of State within 7 days after notice to the chair in order that the person designated may have his or her name on the ballot of the ensuing general election.

If the name of the new nominee is submitted after the certification of results of the preceding primary election, however, the ballots shall not be changed and the former party nominee’s name will appear on the ballot.

Any ballots cast for the former party nominee will be counted for the person designated by the political party to replace the former party nominee.

If there is no opposition to the party nominee, the person designated by the political party to replace the former party nominee will be elected to office at the general election.

For purposes of this paragraph, the term “district political party executive committee” means the members of the state executive committee of a political party from those counties comprising the area involving a district office.

In late 2000, Foley played a large role in aiding George W. Bush during the Presidential election recount controversy in Florida.

Wikipedia on Mark Foley. Him and Katherine Harris.

By the way, this is also in his Wikipedia entry:

Foley has been one of the foremost critics in the House of child pornography. Foley introduced a bill in 2002 to outlaw websites featuring controversial images of nude preteen children, saying that "these websites are nothing more than a fix for pedophiles."[5] In June 2003 he wrote letters to the governor and attorney general of Florida, asking them to review the legality of a program for teenagers of a Lake Como nudist resort in Land O'Lakes, Florida.

Foley's legislation to change federal sex offender laws was supported by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, America's Most Wanted host John Walsh, and a number of victims' rights groups. President George W. Bush signed it into law as part of the Adam Walsh Child Safety and Protection Act of 2006.

Foley also succeeded in getting a law passed that allows volunteer youth- serving organizations like the Boy Scouts of America and Boys and Girls Clubs to have access to FBI fingerprint background checks to help protect children.[6]

Katrina was America's Chernobyl.
