Title: Exclusive: The Sexually Explicit Internet Messages That Led to Fla. Rep. Foley's Resignation

Brian Ross, Rhonda Schwartz & Maddy Sauer Report:

Florida Rep. Mark Foley's resignation came just hours after ABC News questioned the congressman about a series of sexually explicit instant messages involving congressional pages, high school students who are under 18 years of age.

In Congress, Rep. Foley (R-FL) was part of the Republican leadership and the chairman of the House caucus on missing and exploited children.

He crusaded for tough laws against those who used the Internet for sexual exploitation of children.

"They're sick people; they need mental health counseling," Foley said.

But, according to several former congressional pages, the congressman used the Internet to engage in sexually explicit exchanges.

They say he used the screen name Maf54 on these messages provided to ABC News.

Maf54: You in your boxers, too? Teen: Nope, just got home. I had a college interview that went late. Maf54: Well, strip down and get relaxed.

Another message:

Maf54: What ya wearing? Teen: tshirt and shorts Maf54: Love to slip them off of you.

And this one:

Maf54: Do I make you a little horny? Teen: A little. Maf54: Cool.

The language gets much more graphic, too graphic to be broadcast, and at one point the congressman appears to be describing Internet sex.

Federal authorities say such messages could result in Foley's prosecution, under some of the same laws he helped to enact.

"Adds up to soliciting underage children for sex," said Brad Garrett, a former FBI agent and now an ABC News consultant. "And what it amounts to is serious both state and federal violations that could potentially get you a number of years."

Foley's resignation letter was submitted late this afternoon, and he left Capitol Hill without speaking to reporters.

In a statement, he said he was "deeply sorry" and apologized for letting down his family and the people of Florida.

But he made no mention of the Internet messages or the pages.

One former page tells ABC News that his class was warned about Foley by people involved in the program.

Other pages told ABC News they were hesitant to report Foley because of his power in Congress.

This all came to a head in the last 24 hours. Yesterday, we asked the congressman about some much tamer e-mails from one page, and he said he was just being overly friendly. After we posted that story online, we began to hear from a number of other pages who sent these much more explicit, instant messages. When the congressman realized we had them, he resigned.

First, everyone knew this guy was gay, and attracted to boys. He had a long-time boyfriend, and probably the two of them are chickenhawks (the other kind, although come to think of it, Foley is probably both). Second, this stuff was around in both his last two campaigns; it broke in 2000, and he denied it all, even though it was obviously true. But the Repukes called it dirty politics by the Dems (it was actually his GOP opponent in the primaries who blew, so to speak, the whistle). Third, this is such perfect GOP hypocrisy. This guy was promoting a bill to really screw pedophiles.

Now, is he a pedophile? Technically, no. Once the kid is past puberty, it's having sex or promoting sex with a minor, a different charge. It will be amusing to see if he uses that defense, since he was one of the creeps insisting that sex with a 17 year old is the same as having sex with a five year old. Anyone sane can see there is a huge difference, but the wingnuts keep trying to call them the same thing. A 55-year-old man trying to have sex with a 16-year-old boy is pretty disgusting, but not nearly as disgusting as raping a baby.

If he gets charged, he's going to have to use that defense, after trying to get laws passed to treat both crimes the same. Hoist on one's own petard doesn't even begin to cover this. GOP perversion is so blatant, and they are all such flaming hypocrites about it, it makes me want to puke. Roy Cohn, McCarthy's lawyer, said at one time, "I'm not gay, I just like to fuck boys." That is the perfect example of how sick these people are. Frist writes a book about how he felt a little guilty about going to the ASPCA and adopting kittens who he kept as pets for a while, then killed and dissected. The ASPCA jumps through hoops to make sure these animals get good homes and he claims he did it only for science. Like medical students have to kill and tear apart kittens at home as part of their education. And he sees almost nothing wrong with it.

You have to have a really sick mind to be a Repuke these days. I watched that Goldwater thing on HBO the other night and I wondered, does any Repuke DARE watch that? They've not only sold out every principle they have, they've developed such a "big tent" that any pervert is welcome as long as no one can prove it.

The sad thing is, Foley is going to enjoy being made some cell block's passaround.

Jesus, conscienceless sociopath. There are so many of them, I'm beginning to think it's a prerequisite for a GOP pol.

Hey, I called it last night: the GOP is run by a bunch of closeted queers. Just as Democrat politicians like Clinton publicly make the most noises about women's rights while abusing, menacing and exploiting women in private, the "Christian conservative, family values" GOP'ers that bow their heads in prayer, wave Bibles in the air and kiss babies for photo ops while in the public eye, retire from view in order to harass and exploit underage males behind anonymous handles on the internet.
