My (ex) girlfriend and I saw the IMAX movie, "Adrenaline Rush" a few months ago. It was about base jumpers, guys who jump off cliffs.

This guy is jumping off of a fjord in Norway. The ground is over 4000 feet down. (1 image)

Yeah, but it's only one chute.

They don't carry reserve chutes.

I can. Of course I used to do static line jumps from Air Force transports at 1100 feet. And I've free fallen from much higher.

Those chutes have to open fast and having terrain so close is very dangerous, even if it is only a rock face you are passing on the way down.

No guts no glory, I always say.

This was a IMAX screen, which is about ten times bigger than a normal screen.

There were times I had to close my eyes. It was just too intense.

My wife and I are heading up to West Virginia in mid-October to attend Bridge Day; where crazy people like this spend all day jumping off the New River Bridge, the second-highest bridge in the United States. Not quite as spectacular as this, since the bridge is only 1000 feet above the river. Still...lots of fun to watch...they expect the usual crowd of 250,000 people.

Of which many come to hopefully see a splat.

You're probably right, although I am not one of them. The leaves are incredible that time of year, and the recent cold weather is supposed to really enhance the color this year...beautiful area, and the view from the bridge is amazing.

They have over 200 vendor booths set up on the bridge approach if you prefer to shop. :-)

Ah, yes...kettlecorn and fried dough. My wife and I will be dining on aged NY Strip at an area restaurant after the festivities.

I take it then you haven't been to the Royal Gorge bridge in Colorado - the HIGHEST bridge in the US - and a suspension bridge at that!

Quite a view. The river below (some 1300+ feet) looks about ¼ inch wide!!! And the bridge sways as cars drive over. My dad threw his cap off the side once when I was a kid and we watched for about 2 minutes (at least that how long it seemed as a kid LOL) as it fell before we lost sight of it.

Royal Gorge? At least the crossing here at the New River Gorge is a paved, four-lane highway...I wouldn't walk across that rattletrap at Royal Gorge, much less drive on it.
