The latest Jon Tester-Conrad Burns debate in Butte, Montana on Saturday evening drew an increasing share of national media attention but offered up few new insights into either candidate. Still, the national spotlight will show a Reagan-era conservative and a populist progressive widely separated on key issues such as the war in Iraq, the war on terror, and taxation policy.
Burns, the three-term Republican incumbent, failed to address the most pointed question of the debate, predictably whether disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff influenced two of his votes in the U.S. Senate. Burns repeatedly called the charges “baseless allegations and untruths.”
Tester, who showed a fuller range of emotion in the course of the evening, probably found a sound bite moment in response to a Burns charge that he is “soft on terrorism.” Tester, Burns said, “doesn’t understand this enemy” and would weaken the Patriot Act. “Let me be clear,” Tester shot back sharply. “I don’t want to weaken the Patriot Act. I want to repeal it.”
2006 Montana Senate Race I was seriously livid when I read this article.
As I have been repeating ad nauseum for as long as I can remember, we have five extremely vulnerable seats this year - Montana, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Missouri.
In Ohio, the Republican is having a hard time winning because of a corrupt Republican Governor.
In Pennsylvania, the Republican is having a hard time because of the unpopularity of the President.
In Rhode Island, the Republican is trying to win re-election in a state that has so few Republicans that there isn't a last person to turn out the lights.
In Missouri, the Republican incumbent is competing for re-election in a state that has been for decades one of the most closely fought battlegrounds in the nation.
And then there is Montana.
The Democrats nominated a dangerous left-wing extremist with a funny name who thinks the Patriot Act has nothing to do with the War on Terror. The Democratic candidate is to John Kerry's left. He's probably to Ned Lamont's left. Meanwhile, the liberal internet fringe has been busy raising enormous sums of money for Tester.
But what does incumbent Republican Senator Conrad Burns do? Instead of annihilating Tester, like he should be, Burns makes gaffe after gaffe, stupid statement after stupid statement. One would hope that after being burned so many times, Burns would stop touching the stove. But today the Senator practically put both hands on at a Senate hearing.
Burns really should drop out of the race and let Mark Racicot run . . . blah, blah, blah . . .
Thankfully I never got in the habit of voting a straight party ticket. I'd put down a vote for that "D" and day of the week. Damn shame more "R"s aren't like him.
I'm sure I won't agree with him on everything, but at least he has the guts to look the RNC fear/hype machine straight in the eye and call their WOsT bluff.

After seeing Dem. Tester whip up on dottering Burns last night on c-span, I think the Senate is definitely up for grabs. The Dems have finally learned to run on red state issues (like freedom and the 2nd amendment). Terror-scarer Conrad Burns is toast, I think.
I hope you're right. There is NO way the Ds could be any worse that the Rs in matters of freedom. What happened to the '94 revolution and term limits? (silly question)

No party, not even the Dems, could be worse than today's Pubbies. The GOP (gays or pedophiles) are treasonous freedom-crushing fascist perverts. They are unAmerican to the core. They are destroying all that is good in this country. And so they must go the way of the Whigs. To have them continue as a major American political party would only prolong our national shame and disgrace.

Tax cuts that really do stimulate the economy and through increased activity raises revenue ....... Judges that do not legislate from the bench (as much) ....... at least for now .......... I don't care which party starts going in the right/correct direction ............... I prefer to work within a framework instead of scrapping everything and anarchy. One is fooling oneself if they think the left would be more protective of what rights we have left.
The biggest problem is not the Repubs. but the fact the opposition is more bankrupt and leaderless. There is nothing to push them in another direction. Perhaps a loss will wake them up. The loss in '94 did not help the left.

Even if the Democrats don't quite take a majority in the Senate, I think we'll be looking at a swing of at least four votes. In a 51-49 Senate, the Democrats will have a lot more power, and be able to filibuster all sorts of things they can't now.
I think I heard on C-SPAN this morning that the latest polling puts Tester seven points ahead. If an incumbent like Burns is polling that badly, I think he's road kill.

I had C-Span on as I was falling asleep last night and they were showing the Montana senate debate. The GOP incumbent is, apparently, the #1 recipient of Abramoff donations and the Demo guy made sure that everyone was aware of it. The GOP guy was advancing this most bizarre defense saying that 'forget about what he took from Abramoff because Montana was always his number one priority so, he may be corrupt in many ways but he never betrayed his beloved Montana'.
