Today a cop pulled me over and gave me a ticket for expired plates. No big deal, I'll just get them renewed tomorrow. She said, show the judge, he'll toss the ticket, no money involved.

Darn if I couldn't find my insurance card, so she gave me a ticket for that. On this one she wrote $2000. Yes, two thousand dollars.

When I asked her what they meant, she said she was required by law to write it, so I would know if I didn't show the judge my insurance card, the fine went to $2000.

I know it's just a bluff, and a pretty transparent one, but exactly how do they think they would get anyone to pay that? A lot of people would leave the state.

A lot of states have reciprocity, so if you lose your license in one, you lose it in the others, too.

Also $2,000 is probably not enough to leave the state and never be able to return (facing jail if you get caught). Hell, a DWI will cost you more than that.

Just another way for the state to suck off the poor people.

Cops used to be "peace officers," now they're forced to write tickets with empty threats on them.

I know about the reciprocity. You change your name, get a license in another state, they'll never catch you. I've seen people do that, too.

I've met several people who left the state who owned a lot less than $2000.

That seems like a lot of bridges to burn for $2,000. Granted, you could probably go to court and get it reduced.

Fines are usually set out in specificity by statute or code just so rouge cops and thier courtroom buddies can't arbitrarily set fines/bonds.

Check it out for your jurisdiction.

$2000 sounds VERY excessive.

In 1947, the UN created a perpetual war and named it Israel.

Lame excuse on the cop's part. Cops that enforce unjust laws are as culpable as those that legislate them.

"I was only following orders" isn't an excuse in any era.

Just to be clear, I was making a joke. Illegals get away with anything.. but you can't. It's just the way it is. :/

They were all poor, so they packed up and left.

The $2000 is just an empty threat. The cop said, just show the judge your paperwork and it'll all go away, no fines involved.

It's still annoying to get threatened like that, even if there's nothing behind it. It's like those signs, "Hit a road worker, $10,000 fine, go to jai for 15 years." It's an empty threat.

Color challenged turtles ought not play with fire. I mean, look around, see your type of turtle running around willy nilly?? No? Why is that?? Because they didn't present current license and insurance. Now get right with the law Turtle.. go forth and make new turtles. ;)

I’ve never heard of a police officer writing a fine amount on a ticket. I mean what’s the point of a judge? Judicial discretion is apparently out the window. This is another example of the insidious insurance industry worming their way into our lives. She's also full of shit re: the plates. You'll be fined even if you register them properly. Does anyone really believe a citizen can take up "valuable" court time and not be charged? She blew you off.....

Actually the last time I got a ticket for expired plates I showed the judge my renewal, and I left without paying anything. Of course, this is the Midwest, which is a bit different than the rest of the country.

No, but my pug was in the car, so I grabbed him and started bouncing him around, saying, "Oh, no, another epilepic fit! And his medicine costs so much!"
