Analyst suspects Foley contributed ‘bribes’ for cover-up

By: David @

Foley at Child Protection gathering

An MSNBC segment examines if Rep. Foley made a large contribution to the Republican Party in exchange for silence about sexual messages that Foley sent to House pages. Foley gave $100,000 to the GOP Campaign Committee in July. The large contribution came at same time when Republican House leadership ignored Foley's emails.

MSNBC Political Analyst Craig Crawford is suspicious of Foley's donation. Crawford says, "It's part of a pattern on Capitol Hill where member raise money not just for their own campaigns, but to give money to others, to their colleagues. So that's kind of a common practice in both parties. What was unusual here was how large this contribution was and when it was made. Tom Foley gave $100,000 to the campaign arm of the House Republicans, the National Republican Congressional Committee, at about the time when they were deciding to ignore these emails, this first round of emails they say. A couple of months after they knew about this, suddenly he gives this big donation. It raises the question, 'Did he buy their silence?'"

It's Mark Foley. I think Tom Foley was a Dem from Texas, no? I doubt this was a bribe, per se. $100K is chump change to these guys. It might have been a gesture of gratitude, though.

They're going to take this guy's life apart, and I bet there's a lot of stuff teh GOP would rather didn't come out, so to speak.

Without a doubt.

Probably a slip of the tongue. Just weird; this is like pure gold to someone like MSNBC.

What's kinda fun is the Repug strategy for fighting back. "Everyone knew he was gay." Well, no. He denied it flat out when he was asked in 2003. That's why their comparison to Barney Frank and Studds ain't working. They both were out gays caught up in minor scandals.

This is going to infuriate a lot of social conservatives (and bigots) and by claiming that everyone knew Foley was gay, this is no big whoop, it's going to turn that anger from Foley and a couple of top House guys to the GOP as a whole.

Charlie Crist is going to get hammered by this, and a lot of close elections aren't going to be close anymore. It's fun watching Pigboy and Hannity and Coulter screeching that this is some Dem plot. Frankly, the Dems aren't smart enough or mean enough to organize something like this. Put this down to GOP grandiosity and complete and utter disregard for making their actions match their words in even the smallest way.

Look at DeLay. Here's a guy who claims he's deeply, deeply religious. Apart from drinking like a fish and smoking Cuban cigars like they cost a nickel, the guy was a totally vicious thug. Everyone knew that, he even boasted about it. How does someone who really IS deeply religious excuse that kind of behavior and believe for a minute DeLay was anything but a moneygrubbing piece of human garbage? It's like they WANT to be suckered and are grateful for the people who make them look like ignorant, gullible fools.

Speaking of which..when in doubt blame Clinton!:

Extreme right winger blames Predatorgate on Clenis

By: John Amato on Tuesday, October 3rd, 2006 at 9:13 AM - PDT

When in doubt just blame Bill Clinton. That's Hannity's take on Predatorgate. However, Old33 catches him in a most basic lie,

he said that Monica Lewinsky was 19 years old - "she was a teenager" - when Bill Clinton began his affair with Lewinsky. Umm….Sean…Monica was born on Jul 23, 1973. According to the Starr Report, she first met Bill Clinton on November 15, 1995. That would make her 22 years old at the time. A college graduate. An adult. Hardly the same situation as a Congressman soliciting minors…

Video-WMP Video-QT

See, a quick trip to Wikipedia is all it took to expose Hannity's lie, but it doesn't matter to him. He throws as much garbage on the wall as he can and then watches what will stick. By the way, O'Reilly said only the far right element brought up Clinton as an analogy to Foley's situation–so Ole Bill slapped Hannity in the face.

And more from Digby on the religious right :

Tony Perkins of Dobson's Family Research Counsel was on CNN earlier and I think we are hearing the contours of the Christian Right's argument. They are going with Newt Gingrich's formulation: Poor Denny was afraid of being called a gay basher so he didn't say anything.

Since when has the GOP been afraid to be called homophobic or gay bashers? They positively revel in it. In fact, just a couple of months ago 202 Republican House members voted for a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. (It failed to get the required 2/3rds for passage.) Somehow, I don't think the Republicans are quaking in their boots at being called anti-gay.

And if they were so afraid of being called anti-gay that they allowed a 52 year old congressman to stalk 16 year old boys on the internet, then they are much too timorous to be running the government. These guys are charged with making laws and running wars, for gawd's sake.

Tony didn't seem bothered by this. It appears that Focus on the Family has decided that they aren't going to condemn the leadership for failing to protect these teen age kids. But then should we be surprised? Dobson is a child psychologist who wrote this bit of "professional" advice for his followers who wonder if their sons might be gay:

Meanwhile, the boy's father has to do his part. He needs to mirror and affirm his son's maleness. He can play rough-and-tumble games with his son, in ways that are decidedly different from the games he would play with a little girl. He can help his son learn to throw and catch a ball. He can teach him to pound a square wooden peg into a square hole in a pegboard. He can even take his son with him into the shower, where the boy cannot help but notice that Dad has a penis, just like his, only bigger.

Dr Dobson undoubtedly believes that Representative Foley was just behaving as any normal older man would in loco parentis.

Update:
Gary Bauer sent around an email:

This latest scandal in Washington is just further evidence that the pro-
family agenda is desperately needed for the country. We are the ones who
have argued that human sexuality should be channeled through marriage. We
are the ones who have argued that marriage is between one man and one
woman. We are the ones who have argued that schools should teach kids how
to read and write and stop handing out condoms and birth control pills. We
are the ones who say that all our children should be welcomed into the
world under law. We are the ones who say there are reliable standards of
right and wrong. And we are the ones who have led the charge against the
sexualization of our children.

"And we are the ones whocover for and enable 52 year old pervs to banter with 16 year old boys on the internet:

Maf54 (7:46:33 PM): did any girl give you a haand job this weekend

Xxxxxxxxx (7:46:38 PM): lol no

Maf54 (7:48:33 PM): wow...

Update II:

Limbaugh weighs in:

LIMBAUGH: I'm just thinking out loud here. What if somebody got to the page and said, you know, we want you to set Foley up. We need to do a little titillating thing here. Keep it and save it and so forth. How would you get a kid to do that? Yeah, who knows? You threaten him or pay him. There's any number of ways given the kind of people that we're dealing with and talking about here.

Now, folks, I don't want to be misunderstood here. I'm not trying to mount any kind of a defense. That's a bad word. I'm not trying to get into a defense of what Mark Foley did. Please don't misunderstand. I'm just telling you that the -- the -- the orgy and the orgasm that has been taking place in the media since Friday and with the Democrats is -- it's all coordinated, and it's all -- it's all oriented toward the election. There's no concern about the kid -- no concern about the children.

There is -- there is -- there's not even any real problem with what Foley did, as we've discussed. In their hearts and minds and their crotches, they don't have any problem with what Foley did. They've defended it over the -- over the years.

They're shameless. If they were caught raping a baby, they'd claim the little slut was a dem operative jezebel, sent there to set up the noble, family-loving Repuke, and then they'd pull a Swaggart, show up on TV with the wife standing by her man, both of them weeping and claiming they were the victims in all of this and someone should start looking into the background of that DAMN SLUT BABY, who's a lot older and more world-wise than the average 18-month-old.

They make me sick. And this time, it ain't working.

Here's a screen grab of Fox claiming Foley is a DEMOCRAT.

Something tells me THAT was no typo. The disinformation floating around already is breathtaking. The good part is the real press is holding feet to fire. ABC just put out a story that its sources were all Republicans, not Democrats, just for starters. Must make Pigboy, Hannity and Coulter just a tad miffed.

clinton never did lose power
He completed two full Terms
And when he left (by law he is not allowed to run for 3rd Term)
he became Head of Dem Party, a post he holds today
and continues to wield huge power

clinton put power ahead of everything
and was willing to do anything he could to hold on to it and amass more
By the end of his time in Office he had amassed tremendous power
which is why he very nearly succeeded in overturning the legal election of Bush

For Foley it is the end of his public life
But I think he will wind up better off
A beautiful life awaits anyone who is willing to let God lead them to inner
happiness and peace
Love, Palo

palo verde

Palo is on crack. Somebody go to LP and tell the idiot that former Gov. Dean is the head of the Democratic Party. Arggghhhh! (weak Dean scream)

I don't even want to go into her take on the stolen 2000 election Clinton had nothing to do with. I'm already ODed on her utter ignorance.

I had forgotten about Palo. She's completely, totally obsessed with Bill Clinton, sorta like Dick Morris is with Hillary. Everything is related to Bill, everything can be traced to Bill, Bill secretly rules the world and probably created AIDS and poverty just to make conservatives feel bad. Or something.

Apart from that one glaring character flaw, she's a nice person.

There are people over at DU that think the same things about Rove or Bush or Rupert Murdoch.

There were seriously people who started several threads over there, and I am not kidding, implying this whole Foley thing is a Rovian plot to distract us from (insert cause of the week).

But in this up-is-down world, where Fox can claim to be the exact opposite of what it is, with a perfectly straight face, I can understand grasping for a very simple view that explains everything. In Palo's case, everything bad is caused by Bill Clinton, who makes the Illuminati look like a bunch of first-graders forming a secret club (no gurlz aloud).

Fox just blows my mind in how brazen and cheap they are. They screech about "Hollywood" warping our children, while the entertainment end leads the entire charge to put truly objectionable stuff on prime time TV. And at the same time, create some of the greatest shows ever and single-handedly preserved great animation. I truly hope to see Fox News go bankrupt someday. And Roger Ailes with a "Will work for six dozen donuts" sign around his neck at some highway exit.
