Educating Christians About The Ministry of Voting
As Americans we are blessed to have a "government of the people, by the people and for the people." But democracy needs one key component to work: our participation.
In the last mid-term election, six out of every 10 Americans did note vote[1], and that figure is only slightly better for evangelical Christians. In 2002, the last non-presidential election year, only 43 percent of evangelical Christians actually bothered to go to the polls[2]. When people of faith fail to vote, is it any wonder that policies contrary to our beliefs and convictions become law?
A moral and spiritual privilege
With your support, we have mounted major get-out-the-vote initiatives to help Christians see the need to vote. Through brochures, broadcasts and mailings, we are reminding people of faith to also be people of action. We can do no less as stewards of the nation God gave us. It is our sacred duty.
Our recent Register to Vote mailing was sent to Focus supporters in 20 states. Altogether, nearly 410,000 constituents were asked to register to vote if they hadn't done so already, and to pass the form to a friend. Our Stand for the Family rallies, an initiative of our political action division called Focus on the Family Action, will hold get-out-the-vote rallies in three major cities shortly.
This much-needed activity comes at a critical point in our nation's history. With so many important issues at stake--the definition of marriage, the sanctity of human life and judicial nominations--Christians cannot afford to sit out this election. In a midterm election, only 27 percent of eligible voters actually vote. Will you? Whichever side mobilizes the most voters will likely control the congressional agenda for the next two years.
Thank you for helping us spread the word about the significance of voting and the urgency of this election. Be sure to vote your values. And encourage a friend to do the same. It's our best chance to protect our families, and help shape America for the better.
