Pope Assures ADL Leaders He Is A Moral Voice Against Anti-Semitism New York, NY, October 12, 2006 … In a private audience today with leaders from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) at the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI issued his strongest declaration against anti-Semitism since assuming the papacy, telling the visiting delegation of Jewish leaders that he would, "be a strong, constant voice against anti-Semitism." "I will always be there for you in fighting anti-Semitism," Pope Benedict personally assured Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, in informal words following his prepared remarks to the delegation. "The church deplores all forms of hatred or persecution directed against the Jews and all displays of anti-Semitism at any time and from any source," the Pope said, adding that he plans to carry on the positive interfaith relationship that Jews had with Pope John Paul II. Pope Benedict also used the meeting as an opportunity to express regret over the recent controversy surrounding his remarks on the Prophet Mohammed and Islam. He told ADL leaders that his remarks were intended as an invitation to dialogue between Islam and other religions, and that his quoting from a medieval text that characterized some of Mohammed's teachings as "evil and inhuman" was misunderstood by many in the Muslim world. "May the Eternal One, our Father in heaven, bless every effort to eliminate from our world any misuse of religion as an excuse for hatred or violence," the Pope said. He added that the Vatican is making interfaith dialogue a top priority with an aim to, "build relationships not just of tolerance, but of authentic respect." Mr. Foxman said: "In offering his most forceful words yet against anti-Semitism, and in expressing remorse for the reaction to his remarks about Islam, Pope Benedict has shown that he is greatly sensitive to the need for a new level of openness and dialogue among the major faiths." Mr. Foxman, a Holocaust survivor, shared his story of being hidden by his Polish Catholic nanny, Bronislawa Kurpi, who had him baptized. Pope Benedict, in an unprecedented response, said, "You have touched my heart." A longtime Vatican expert said that it was the first time he has ever seen the Pope leave his prepared remarks to offer a personal word to a private Jewish audience. While in Rome, the delegation of ADL leaders also met with Cardinal Walter Kasper, the president for the Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews, and Father Norbert Hoffman, the secretary of the Vatican's Commission for Relations with Judaism. Cardinal Kasper discussed the need for fostering programs to teach the lessons of Nostra Aetate, the landmark document that repudiated the centuries-old "deicide" charge against all Jews, stressed the religious bond shared by Jews and Catholics, and reaffirmed the eternal covenant between God and the People of Israel.

So we have everywhere this double function; first a synagogue service Christianized, in which the holy books were read, psalms were sung, prayers said by the bishop in the name of all (the people answering ‘Amen’ in Hebrew, as had their Jewish forefathers), and homilies, explanations of what had been read, were made by the bishop or priests, just as they had been made in the synagogues by the learned men and elders (e. g., Luke, iv, 16-27)... Roy Schoeman, the author of Salvation is from the Jews, confirms as well that the Mass is based on the Jewish ceremonial worship and that Catholic theology is based on the Old Testament! “As a Jew coming to the Catholic Church, it was natural for me to find the relationship between Judaism and the Catholic Church among the most interesting things in the world. In the parable of the treacherous tenants (Matthew 21:33-46), the response of the landowner to the murder of his servants and son is to put these evil ones to a miserable death and to lease the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at harvest time. The leaders of the Jews were the treacherous tenants who murdered God's son and the servants of God. The nation of Israel ("vineyard") was taken from them and given to the gentiles ("other tenants") with the expectation that the Christian gentiles would convert the world ( "produce a harvest"). What harvest is Ratzinger producing when he urges toleration and acceptance of the treacherous tenants? Missionary zeal for the souls of contemporary, self-described "Jews" has been canceled by Ratzinger, along with Christ's ideological and spiritual contest with Judaism, which has been ruled obsolete, "after Auschwitz." Apparently, "after Calvary" is insufficient to any longer motivate the Church Militant, which is called to be militant mainly with regard to Islam. In a front page article in yesterday's edition of the Wall Street Journal, the Zionist paper suggests the need for a new Catholic crusade against Muslims. In celebrating the defeat of Muslims in Spain, the Journal omitted all mention of the fact that in 1492, "when Christian armies drove the last Muslim rulers out of ...Granada" they also drove out all those who practiced Judaism. But the 21st century "Crusade" is kashrut (kosher), "Judeo-Christian" and intended to have a selective target. Crusading itself is wrong with regard to Judaism and right with regard to Islam. The double-mind that can embrace that tortured construct has nothing in common with He who said, "I would you were hot or cold" (Revelation 3:16). If John Paul II betrayed Christ to the rabbis by forbidding opposition to Judaism--such a betrayal being the function of Judas--then Ratzinger, architect of the thinking behind the scenes, stands in the role of the Sanhedrin who sent Judas. Even meeting with this preposterous group is tacit admission that the church is guilty of this nebulous crime of "anti semitism". What a disappointment. I must admit all this Papal glad-handing of Abe the Fox and his Christophobic ilk is a bit hard to take. Maybe Pope Benedict is of the "realist" school. The Vatican wants the beatification process re: Pope Pius to move quickly and smoothly, so the Pope may want the support of Abe and other prominent Jews to not cause waves. Note Abe the Fox's allusion to his being saved and baptized by his Catholic nanny and how the Pope veres off his prepared remarks. Maybe there's a bit of a quid pro quo mutual "understanding" going on - who knows?
