CT-04: Shays: Abu Ghraib "Wasn't Torture," Just A "Sex Ring" By Matt Corley | bio GOP Rep. Christopher Shays said that what happened at Abu Gharib "wasn't torture"; it was merely a "sex ring." Today's Stamford Advocate reports that Shays made the comment during a debate Wednesday night with Dem challenger Diane Farrell. Here's what Shays told the audience: "Now I've seen what happened in Abu Ghraib, and Abu Ghraib was not torture. It was outrageous, outrageous involvement of National Guard troops from [Maryland] who were involved in a sex ring and they took pictures of soldiers who were naked." Farrell responded to the paper: "For Chris to say it was a sex ring is to minimize what happened. Suspicious deaths, men beaten, anal rape with light sticks, attack dogs sicked on inmates, men kept chained to walls in stress positions for hours, men forced to wallow in their own feces and urine . . . and that is just the stuff that we were allowed to know about (the more "horrific pictures" that Rummy himself described as "inhuman" have been kept from us) . . . and Chris Shays, Republican, thinks such stuff was just a "sex ring?" Republicans have very "diverse" sex lives it seems.
Shays has also been making light of Foley's advances towards the pages.
