Title: Rick Santorum and the "Eye of Mordor" (not from the onion)

In an interview with the editorial board of the Bucks County Courier Times, embattled Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum has equated the war in Iraq with J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings." According to the paper, Santorum said that the United States has avoided terrorist attacks at home over the past five years because the "Eye of Mordor" has been focused on Iraq instead.

"As the hobbits are going up Mount Doom, the Eye of Mordor is being drawn somewhere else," Santorum said. "It's being drawn to Iraq and it's not being drawn to the U.S. You know what? I want to keep it on Iraq. I don't want the Eye to come back here to the United States."

We're sure that we wouldn't either, if only we had the slightest idea of what Santorum was saying. The Courier Times translates for those of us who are not so conversant in spooky Tolkienese: The "Eye of Mordor," it seems, was "the tool the evil Lord Sauron used in search of the magical ring that would consolidate his power over Middle-earth."

To be fair, Santorum's interview with the editorial board wasn't all about fantasy. Well, at least not the Dungeons and Dragons kind. Santorum said that he disagreed with the notion that the United States is "bogged down" in Iraq. As for talk of a troop withdrawal? Santorum said: "I don't think you ask that question. I know that's the question everybody wants to ask. But I don't think anyone would ask that question in 1944, 'Gee, how long are we going to be in Europe?' We're going to be in Europe until we win."

When Santorum loses in November, he can go back to being a wandering wizard.

I've already said too much.

Perhaps this idiot will get around to reading That Hideous Strength; but I doubt that he'd "get it."

Thats okay, the citizens of Pa. disagree with Santorum and in a few days, we are gonna show him how much we disagree.

Maybe this boot licking lackey can move to Paraguay with Bush.

This gives you an idea of just how morally bankrupt our government is. Never mind the absurd notion that because the US is fighting a popular widely backed insurgency that is fighting an evil occupation that the "Terrorists" have been to busy to "attack us here at home"- what sort of policy is it that would subject another country to such misery - hundreds of thousands of deaths and abject suffering so that a few terrorist attacks could be avoided here in the United States? Is this what the Iraqi people are suppossed to be grateful for? Making their country the foci of human misery so the US can avoid it? Does this idiot have any idea that what he just said will be all over the Arab world tomorrow- and given much more play than here- where the inference of what he is saying just flies over the heads of our media and Americans in general?

Basically, what he just said is that the US has made Iraq a living hell - a battlefield of daily misery and death for its inhabitants so that the US could avoid a few bomb throwers. Utterly depraved. This idiot's words will be flying all over the Arab equivelent of El Pee and Freaker land for weeks.

Jesus, I always knew he was totally nuts, what with handing dead babies around to his kids, but this is wacky even by his standards. Guess he didn't want to use the "roach hotel" simile they were using back in 03, since they seem perfectly capable of checking in and then killing our guys. 3,000 some odd dead, 20,000 wounded, many of them REALLY bad (and would have been dead in previous wars...someone with both legs blown off in Nam died, period, unless they got it right at a medivac copter). Compared to Nam, we are doing just as bad, in what should be an easier climate, with no organized army fighting us, as was the case there with the North Vietnamese army and the Chinese fighters helping them.

I don't think he understands what the Eye of Mordor is. It's the all-seeing eye the State wants. When you find a town full of those traffic cameras, that's the Eye of Mordor.

He's a case of arrested development like his fellow baby-boom politicians Bush and Allen.

Mike....c'mon. Did Spooky Santorum REALLY say this? I know he's weird, but is he really THIS bat-shit crazy?

"I woke up in the CRAZY HOUSE."
