MAGAZINE SHOCK: REPUBLICANS WILL HOLD CONGRESS

BARRON'S COVER Survivor!
The GOP Victory

By JIM MCTAGUE

JUBILANT DEMOCRATS SHOULD RECONSIDER their order for confetti and noisemakers, BARRON's claims in their next edition. The Democrats, as widely reported, are expecting GOP-weary voters to flock to the polls in two weeks and hand them control of the House for the first time in 12 years -- and perhaps the Senate, as well. Even some Republicans privately confess that they are anticipating the election-day equivalent of Little Big Horn. Pardon our hubris, but we just don't see it.

Our analysis -- based on a race-by-race examination of campaign-finance data -- suggests that the GOP will hang on to both chambers, at least nominally. We expect the Republican majority in the House to fall by eight seats, to 224 of the chamber's 435. At the very worst, our analysis suggests, the party's loss could be as large as 14 seats, leaving a one-seat majority. But that is still a far cry from the 20-seat loss some are predicting. In the Senate, with 100 seats, we see the GOP winding up with 52, down three.

If the GOP holds on to Congress by election theft, this country's gonna come unglued. The scary thing is, that might be exactly what the neo-fascists want. Subscribe to *Restore the Republic*

it is very true that there is almost always a perfect correlation between who raises the most money and who wins.

but everyone who knows anything knows that the republicans are very unpopular. and you're right arator, it is very scary that it may be what the fascists want, for us to all see them cheating and for confrontation to occur. they want confrontation. how else can they jail their opponents and impose further police-state rule.

The elections won't be stolen. They don't have to do that. The system is so sceloric and ossified that even obvious corruptioin and a disasterous war can't change it. It is time for people to wake up- voting doesn't do anything.

You have 435 congressional districts gerrymandered down to the block with sophisticated computer programs that even project out population changes due to projected property values. Each fraud party has a core of ideological voters that votes for their party no matter what and congressional disticts are arrainged along these lines. Nothing is presented as black or white- real and unreal- everything is just an ideologically motivated opinion and whom you believe- what your reality is- depends on what party label you wear. Beyond that, the parties in congressional districts with economic interests that can be effected by DC (which are all economic interests as DC lays claim to regulate everything) have a direct stake in maintaining an incumbent because his power only increases with time in DC and his Pork drawing ability. It doesn't pay to oust your congressmen even for the most obscene transgressions.

Of 435 seats- some 30 are even considered competitive races. In order to just maintain the fiction of our elections- the "oppossition" in many of these races have to be cajoled to run even though they don't have a prayer and they know it. And even with this effort to put up fake candidates and sacrificial lambs- a full third of congressmen will be running unoppossed (third party challenges not even worth mentioning).

Before you get depressed- the upside of the GOP holding onto power is that the complete corruption of the Federal cess pool cannot be denied except by the most obtuse. It will be awfully tough for anyone with a shred of credibility as a political pundit to not mention the rigidity of the system- and its inability to change.
