For some, Halloween -- with roots going back to ancient harvest rituals -- runs deeper than bobbing for apples and carving pumpkins.For those practicing the Wicca religion, Halloween is one of eight holy days throughout the year and is known as Samhain. "It's the third in a triad of harvest festivals. Preparing for winter and the dark months ahead," said Adam Holtzinger, owner of the Sacred Earth store in downtown Antioch. It is also a time of remembering ancestors and lighting a candle for them, he said. Holtzinger has been practicing Wicca most of his life. Technically, males following Wiccan practices are known as Wicca; females are known as Wicce. Holtzinger likes to keep it more simple. "I generally tell people that I'm a witch," he said.Wicca is based on the changes of seasons and how they affect your life, Holtzinger said. The holidays are the two solstices and equinoxes and the four cross-quarter days. Wiccans generally pray to deities similar to more mainstream religions. The male and female divinities are known as Lady and Lord or Great Mother and Great Father, he said. "We worship higher parties like any other benevolent faith," Holtzinger said.Some of the stereotypical depictions of witches are rooted in truth, others, obviously, are not. "A lot of us are not crazy about the green-faced, wart-nosed hags that pass for witches. I know a lot of witches and never saw one with green skin," he said. "But sometimes the holiday opens the doors for discussion."Wiccans do use ceremonial brooms as a tool of purification for rituals, and wands capped with crystals on the ends are used to divert and direct energy, he said. Black mirrors made from volcanic glass are used as a focal point for gazing and meditation and are symbolically a connection with the other world. "This time of year the veil between worlds is said to be very thin," he said.The pentagon is a powerful symbol of Wicca, representing what Holtzinger said are the five elements -- spirit, earth, air, fire and water. Incense is also used in rituals as a mechanism to raise prayers and intentions up to the divine, Holtzinger said. Organized covens still exist, he said, but the trend these days is toward solitary practice and perhaps to gather with a few close friends for holiday rituals. As for secular Halloween, Holtzinger said that jack-o'-lanterns and trick-or-treating are ancient traditions and he enjoys seeing them practiced today. Running a store in Antioch that specializes in crystals, incense, pagan jewelry and other ritual supplies isn't as controversial as one might think, he said. Holtzinger enjoys a steady clientele of regular customers as well as a lot of newcomers. "People don't want to go all the way to Chicago to pick up these things," he said. Irrespective of Wiccan beliefs, Halloween is the absolute fun-nest holiday in this country and it appeals to people of all age groups.

The Goddess love you, even if you tie a purely Christian non-entity like the Christian Satan to it, and like all the cultural, religious and physical genocide of people who practiced the religions mine, that is Wicca replaces. I am a leader in our local group, and we have never sacrificed so much as a flea for anything. I have met Satanists now, and they usually make great fun of us Wicca Practitioners saying we don't appreciate the relishing of the flesh and carnal knowledge as they do. I think with all due respect you do not understand Wicca well. We believe that one has a great respnsibility to promote good and to worry about all the consequences and ramifications of what one does in life. Stealing, lying, hurting others, all this stuff has to be avoided or it all comes back to you threefold. Let the blessings be.

I hope those beliefs will hold you in good stead when judgment day comes around, but I also know there is no guarantee of that outside Christ, even though I know you think it's all a fairy tale or maybe a nightmare. I could have done what the Talmudists do when they see a drowning goyim and passed on by. But I would rather try to be sure she is here to enjoy life even more abundantly forever, by throwing her a Lifeline. It's what we Christians do. Nightmare is right, I see religions such as yours' ultimately full of people far more concerned with the accumulation of money and power the 'saving people.' An they keep the 'franchises' to do this by doing th roles that compliment the needs of people in political power by culturally assimilating people and giving them the consolation prize that though the winners of the political power and economic punch game are not going to let them in the club for lack of resources and room, they will get the grand prize behind door number three when they die. I see how this dovetails too well together to be explained any other way. I don't buy it, in fact I never have. I was able to compartmentalize the brainwashing effect of religion at an extremely young age when I trusted by instincts that the propaganda and B.S. was designed to exploit my youth and naivety and I promised my self at age five or six I would wait until I was older to commit to these bizarre and self serving belief systems. I am glad I did, because I do not in any way shape or form have the narcotic- like effect of emotional bond or attachment to the Christian belief system. I am and always have been completely isolated from it, and to adopt it now I would have to controvert allot of careful logical thinking and work figuring out of how things actually are. I will never ever belong to a major organized religion, and I am smart enough to look at the good things in all of these religions and to recognize what they are, why the are and live by them. I am a fiercely independent person; an iconoclast if you will. But I know that if you steal or lie, at some level below human conscious awareness you pay for your transgressions. Something at some level tries to balance the Karma and those transgressed on at some level becomes aware something is not right and you lose an intangible element needed to not have Karma pay you back for what you did. I note there are fairly sincere Christians, and Christian scoundrels who not only con and abuse, but are obviously aware of what they are doing is wrong. And if I look high enough on the chain of command o the sincere and good Christians, I find the same sort of people manipulating and controlling them. I like you, and I do not in anyway doubt for a minute you are profoundly sincere in your beliefs. However, that which has protected me from being Christian will never not be part of the makeup of my soul, intellectual abilities and emotional makeup. And I am a man that means never when I say never. I profoundly believe all life is sacred and tied together. I do not in any way shape or form put human life forms above other life forms, we are not special. And out thinking we are has put life on Earth in dire jeopardy. Life is a web of complex interconnected relationships, and the tower of babble which is human arrogance and hubris thinking they are number one is a karmic machete slashing and tearing at the web of life destroying the most sacred work of our creator, the Goddess who made us all. My very deep gut instinct is that the godhead has a dominant side, masculinity and femininity being like the right and left side of the human brain. The creator needs female and male aspects to be the creator, and her dominant side is feminine. I commend you for your studies and caring, but I see you as examining every nuance of the bark of the tree inches in front of your face. I forever and aways will prefer my view of the entire forest and all of it's elements. You are a smart man, think about that metaphor, as what I am saying here needs the right hemisphere modality of careful introspection and meditation. The left hemisphere that reads and takes things at fast, superficial value cannot grasp what I am getting at quickly. Think about how our culture emphasizes the traits of the left side of out brains, its language, math and organizational skills and it's focus on the concept of chronological passage of time. It is out of balance. The right sides of our brains that deals with artistic ability and volume and space are important, and if one ignores the cultural imperative to lopsidedly value part of our mental traits over another, we are not complete. I look for the completeness of what is the creator, not just those aspects that when taken alone make religion a useful tool for the power elite to politically and socially control others. In my paradigm of religious belief, it is important to not quickly and rashly jump on any religious bandwagon. I distrust evangelical endeavor and prostelyzation and any part of a faith that does not recognize the value of not being used by the economical and political power elites and values highly a human beings well developed traits to think independently. My faith has been persecuted for not assuaging to the pressure to be a good tool to culturally assimilate and to control others to make things easy for those with most the power and capital to keep competition for what they have at a low level. This is a large reason I have such trust and devout belief in Wicca and the recognition of the important of the divine feminine in that which is the creator. The destruction wrought on it over the centuries for not going along with the program gives it credibility to me. Those religions that are fat and happy and allowed to flourish by the power elite have almost zero respect or credibility in my eyes in the sense of being aceptable to fit in with my belief system.. I know this is a long post, and it touches on many things and to do a better treatment of this material I could make it longer and give it citation as you do your posts. But if you think about what I say beyond the casual read level, you will see what I say has credibility, makes good sense, and is deserving of every bit of the religious respect in terms of tolerance I give your faith and that of other people.
