Day of the Dead altars on display

Angela Cara Pancrazio

The Arizona Republic

Nov. 2, 2006 12:00 AM

Carlos Navarrete collected sugar skulls and votive candles, baked loaves of bread and adorned the centerpiece of the Día de los Muertos altar with an image of Nuestra Señora Morena, Our Brown Lady. He has no photograph of his grandmother. But he wrote next to the altar: "I will always carry her in my heart."

Emma S. Gonzalez built an altar, too. Hers was in remembrance of "my unforgettable mother." She draped her altar with samples of needlepoint and crochet, two of her mother's favorite pastimes.

Pablo Luna's altar seemed to climb toward the heavens inside the seventh-annual Día de los Muertos Festival Exhibit at Arizona State University's Museum of Anthropology. advertisement

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is the Mexican three-day holiday honoring loved ones that began Tuesday, leading up to the actual Day of the Dead today. Honoring loved ones in an individualistic way with an altar is a way of communicating with them.

Luna stacked the tower with all the things his daughter Citlalli loved: a Strawberry Shortcake doll, a well-worn copy of Dr. Seuss's Huevos Verdes con Jamón, and a box of Reese's candy pieces.

"Although tragedy has taken its toll on our family," wrote Luna, "the altar has helped us to heal and to remember her beautiful spirit."

Marco A. Albarrán's was less traditional, a tabletop altar constructed mostly of plastic and transparent materials.

"Most of my altars are done to attract the spirits that are still here in the world," Albarrán said.

Families honor the dead with altars decorated with fruits, breads and other gifts to greet the spirits when they are believed to return home each year on Nov. 2.

while christian symbols are purged from the public square the pagan symbols of foreign and strange gods are raised up and promoted with taxpayer funds at public institutions.

here is a bible verse.

Psalms 137:1 By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.

So you think that's some pagan symbol there, that crowned Mexican madonna? Compared to NorteAmericanos, the Mexicans are not in the least Pagan. They are much more religious and Christian than we are. Or maybe you don't pass out candy at Halloween?

the law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, beg in the streets and steal bread.

I don't pass out candy on halloween.

and I know about the mexicans' day of the dead. It is a strange and foreign spirit that they're conjuring up and we should reject it.

these symbols shown in the picture are idols and they should be destroyed.

here's a bible verse.

Psalm 19:14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

The 'Day of the dead' in Mexico City is a huge celebration. THey go to cemeteries en masse in their fine clothes and drink liquor and eat fine food. The #1 symbol they use to celebrate this holiday is a human skull.

here is another bible verse.

Deuteronomy 30:19 I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, [that] I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:

Well, the kids in your neighborhood must think you are a real scrooge! The praying Madonna (you know, the mother of Christ?) you pictured there might not have been the best example of the Paganism of the Mexican Catholics and their "day of the dead". Christmas itself was piggybacked onto the Pagan midwinter rites and various Roman celebrations, hence the Tree, the presents, the personification of Odin (Santa Claus)...

You want to talk about Paganism, you need to talk about our paleo-Nordic/Roman celebration of Christmas, followed by our Bacchanalian Midwinter orgiastic rite called New Year's Eve.

As long as Christmas remains an unabashed American celebration of the glory of Mammon, I'm not going to worry about any invading Mexican holidy celebrating the memory of their dead loved ones, thanks.

Here's a Bible Verse for you, too:

Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and YET have believed, in the Easter Bunny, the colored eggs, the faux grass in the basket of toys and the holy chocolate bunnies, Amen. -John 20: 29 (edited for modern usage)

Regarding christmas - I think it is a nice thing to have a time set aside for celebration of jesus' birth. here are some bible verses.

Luke 2:7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

Luke 2:8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

Luke 2:9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

Luke 2:10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

Luke 2:11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

Luke 2:12 And this [shall be] a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

Luke 2:13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

Luke 2:14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

but you are right that many 'christmas' practices are pagan idolatry. In the old testament the modern practice of christmas trees is described and specifically ridiculed as an example of a very stupid type of custom that the people are prone to. The new testament has verses in it that peg jesus' birth as coming I think sometime in early summer, not on december 25.

Regarding those halloween trick or treaters - I'm very tolerant. The first time they knock on the door I ignore them. Even the second time I ignore them. But the third time I get my AK-47 and I let them have it. If their parents don't smile I let them have it too. I can get along with people.

In all seriousness, when God was made flesh, he propounded the hardest commandment of all to follow. Tougher than the first Ten, which he pretty much repudiated anyway, tougher than all the mosaic details about all the little peccadillos about what you ate when, what meals followed passover, all that minutia of unimportance.

The hardest law Christ issued was "love your enemies".

The only time in my entire life I have seen true Christian love on display was when the Amish families of the dead children from that slaughter in the schoolhouse went to visit and pray with the family of their murderer.

If you can't do that or imagine doing that, you need to take a long hard look at yourself and ask if you understand Christianity at all.

As far as some Mexicans burning candles in memory of their loved ones? Who cares. I'm no Pharisee to go casting stones.

In this case, something was added to the Word in translation.
