November 3,4,5, 2006 -- GOP's Dick in Butts today. Amid the male prostitution tryst scandal involving evangelical Christian leader Rev. Ted Haggard, the recently-resigned President of the National Association of Evangelicals and pastor of the Colorado Springs New Life Church, Vice President Dick Cheney will stage a media event today at Butts Army Air Field in Haggard's hometown of Colorado Springs. Not surprisingly, James Dobson of the Colorado Springs-based Focus on the Family, has come to Haggard's defense. Dobson, it will be recalled, once had this bit of advice for fathers of sons: ". . . the boy's father has to do his part. He needs to mirror and affirm his son's maleness. He can play rough-and-tumble games with his son, in ways that are decidedly different from the games he would play with a little girl. He can help his son learn to throw and catch a ball. He can teach him to pound a square wooden peg into a square hole in a pegboard. He can even take his son with him into the shower, where the boy cannot help but notice that Dad has a penis, just like his, only bigger." They are Dobson's words in case you thought you were reading the instant messages of Mark Foley. Dick in Butts, Haggard in trouble, and Dobson in the shower.

Gak - hopefully not a "whole lot" bigger. The local right wing talk radio show here in CS was full of sympathy for Pastor Ted. Funny cause usually they hate the gays and drug crowd. Personal Note: When out kids were eight nine yo, we were looking for a church. My dear dad was and is a rapture/talk in tounges Christian. He wanted us to go to where the "best " was. So for a few weeks we took our children to New Life Mega Church 'bout eight miles from here, and enrolled the kids in their peculiar system of children teaching. I was uncomfortable from the start. New Life had set up a western style (understandable, were in the west) system of teaching. By that I mean they had these "forts" for the different classes to go into (Think of F troop TV of long ago). Well so far so good, tho I was not too happy with the fort stuff, but if it helped get the kids interested in some moral teachings OK. God herself knows how bored I was with church when I was my childrens age. But what really bothered me, seriously, were the enforcers. They were these men dressed up in cowboy sherrif outfits complete with badges and GUNS. I love guns but in this setting it seemed to me to be over the top authoritarian. I know they were fakes, but they were theatrical fakes - they looked real. These guys were not friendly, they were, as I said before the tough guys, the enforcers. This was for the fifth grade set. I didn't like the militerization of the religion for kids here one bit. So Dear wife and I go to main service. It's pretty much like a rock concert. Alot of friendly greeters to show you to your seats. Great music, professional, lots of evangelical stuff. The main attraction, at least for the men, had to have been a tremendously gorgeous women at the front of the choir. Gad, my evil mind remembers her to this evil day. Her dress was modest, in a defensiable sexual way, but O so sheer, the back lighting teased the men and the lesbians with hints and glimpses and Geez, if you were a functioning man, this had to have been your point of focus. You did not have a choice in the matter. No choice. She was highly sexual, by obvious design. Did I mention highly sexual??? Ted was a great speaker, knew all the right things to say and all the ways to move. He did not appear too long, as befits a superstar. Well, after a few weeks there, we moved on. The children agreed that the enforcement thing was not to their liking (homeschooled), and I did not like the mega church experience. I will say they had many help options, and the rank and file organizations must have helped alot of folks who needed it. That's what I saw. The sherrifs going around with badges ond sixshooters and the forts made me run.
