Sen. Craig Thomas was diagnosed with a form of leukemia after being hospitalized for pneumonia.

CHEYENNE, Wyoming (AP) -- Sen. Craig Thomas, hospitalized since Monday with pneumonia, has been diagnosed with a form of leukemia, the Republican senator's spokesman said Thursday.

Thomas fell ill in church in Casper on Sunday and was taken by ambulance to Wyoming Medical Center. He and his wife, Susan, flew back to Washington later in the day.

Thomas, 73, canceled campaign events Monday and was admitted to the National Naval Medical Center that evening, said his spokesman Cameron Hardy.

While hospitalized, Thomas was elected to a third term with 70 percent of the vote.

Sad news, I wish him success at returning to health, but at his age this is very bad news. The Democratic Govenor no doubt will appoint a Democrat to fill the rest of his term when and if he leaves office. This will expand the Democratic majority in the Senate, but that is not something even they should rejoice about. (1 image)

Just elected and now this. 6 year terms for senators is kinda rediculous.

Agreed. His odds of survival look very ugly. Realistically he should resign and if he was aware of this during the campaign he should have withdrawn and given his party a chance to keep the seat.

Yep. He has been diagnosed with AML (acute myeloid leukemia) and the prognosis for patients over age 70 is very bad indeed.

http://www.clevelandclinicmeded.com/diseasemanagement/hematology/aml/aml.htm

",,,The prognosis for older patients remains poor, however. In the MRC AML 8 trial, the remission rate was 70% for patients under age 50 years old, 52% for those 60 to 69 years old, but only 26% for those older than 70 years..."

Newly elected Mayor of Pittsburgh, Bob O'Connor, went to the local hospital ER thinking that he had the flu. He was dead a couple of months later.

I wouldn't bet on what the Governor will do. In the past, for the most part, it has been such that governors will appoint from the party that the officeholder was from. That, of course, isn't set in stone. BUt I would suggest that with him having just won with a 70% election rate, if the governor is desirous of continuing in office in Wyoming, he would appoint an 'r' else it would appear he would be kicking the teeth of 70% of the voters.

Westerners, in general, continue to be somewhat honorable....but then I've not lived in Wyoming--just know of some people that did.
