An MSNBC online poll shows that the overwhelming majority of its participating voters believe President Bush should be impeached. The poll asked the question, "Do you believe President Bush's actions justify impeachment?" Four choices were presented: # "Yes, between the secret spying, the deceptions leading to war and more, there is plenty to justify putting him on trial." # "No, like any president, he has made a few missteps, but nothing approaching 'high crimes and misdemeanors.'" # "No, the man has done absolutely nothing wrong. Impeachment would just be a political lynching." # "I don't know." Of nearly 360,000 people who had voted in the "unscientific" poll by 9:30PM Eastern on Friday evening, 87 percent responded "Yes." Despite public clamor in some sectors for an investigation of controversial actions by President Bush and his administration, which could potentially lead to articles of impeachment, key players in the newly empowered Democratic majority are playing down such calls. DNC chairman Howard Dean recently said, "[W]e're not going to do that," while the probable next Speaker of the House, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, had earlier indicated that impeachment was "off the table." Likely next head of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. John Conyers, is a concern to some Republicans who fear he may initiate prompt, partisan panel hearings on the Bush administration's actions regarding the Iraq war, the consolidation of power in the executive branch, and other divisive events. But as memories of the bitter 2006 election season begin to fade, and as Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Republican Party chair Ken Mehlman step down in the wake of Democratic gains, there are signs that bipartisanship action on pressing issues may supersede cries for retribution--at least for now. 'Caveat webtor' As for the poll, despite considerable voter support for impeachment indicated in its tally, MSNBC notes that it is "not a scientific survey" and includes a link to a separate page that explains in some detail how a randomly selected sample of "1,000 people can be more representative than" an informal online survey of hundreds of thousands. "MSNBC's Live Votes are not intended to be a scientific sample of national opinion," the website notes. "Instead, they are ... a way to share your views on the news with MSNBC writers and editors and with your fellow users." The poll is presently available here but could be removed, altered or archived at any time. A cache of earlier, though similar, results is viewable here.

If the Ds don't impeach, I hope it comes back to haunt them. I still think Conyers will discover something new that will trigger the process once he sits down come January.
Jethro... We all know that the decision not to impeach was made some time ago and that the word was passed down to the political stooges. It was not a coincidence that Pelosi, Dean and Conyers all now love Bush. It is now make nice time and sooth the sheep, once again .
There is an outside chance that the Dems are playing it smart. Rather then come in with a drive to impeach, which might appear to be a partisan witchhunt to much of the country, they are coming in with a centrist face saying that impeachment is off the table. By starting this way, when whistleblowers in the executive branch begin to hemorhage disclosures of high crimes and misdemeanors after the Dems take over in January, the Dems can appear to come to impeachment reluctantly and sadly, and thereby avoid the pure partisanship label. That just might make any future impeachment effort more effective and unstoppable than it would have been otherwise.

well if its a chance its so outside its been left behind.. the dems are nothing more than a ditto mark of A .. otherwise they wouldve fought Bush on so many things to start to try to list them .. a huge task.. the idea there is a opposition party is so not so.. the proof as they say is in the pudding..

Well, Jesus Christ, give 'em a week to unpack before they start looking for dead gay hookers under the bed. My bet: 2 years of watching cockroaches scuttle under the light, VP resignation, no impeachment. Not like the Dems aren't just as crooked, but it'll take a couple years to get the graft machinery in place.

Any impeachment discussion must be for something unrelated to war, because there can be no dialogue regarding the legitimacy of the invasion of Iraq. Otherwise that could lead to a consciousness raising about "our" middle east "policies", and it has been pre-ordained that there is only one side to the issue and it is therefore and forevermore off the table. People are not to be "confused" into thinking that it's an issue worthy of debate however sensitively or cautiously the sacred jewel is approached. Ruffians like me are likely to have an abrasive effect, and even those who polish it must be vetted through proper religious, social and political channels. Our blatantly unprincipled and murderous defense of Israel cannot ever be discussed, and even references to Meirshemier & Walt's academic paper are grounds for perpetual shrieks of simulated outrage. Persons who fail to heed this warning do so at their own peril.
It's not just online polls. Newsweek Poll: Bush is at 31% , An All-Time Low. The lower Bush approval goes, the more thinkable impeachment becomes.

By clearly stating, not once, but several times, with two top leaders- Pelosi and Dean- and one far left leader - Conyers- that they will not make an impeachment attempt they have effectively sent a very discouraging signal to potential whistleblowers. If their intent was to play it coy- they would have word parsed around and said stuff like "we don't have plans for impeachment at this time" or "Under current circumstances we don't have plans for impeachment proceedings". They didn't do that- they CLEARLY said- NO IMPEACHMENT. You don't get much more clarity in our politics than that.
Sen. Leahy has just said that his committee is going to investigate the warrantless wiretapping. That's a felony crime that Bush has admitted committing repeatedly, and that he insists he is going to go on committing.

The lower Bush approval goes, the more thinkable impeachment becomes. That's not a bad review of the prevailing attitudes... Feeling Blue? After the Democratic sweep of Congress, President Bush's approval reaches a new low. But voters want Democrats to chart a moderate course. They have said that they will investigate and perform their Constitutional duties to uncover the facts regarding the conduct of the Executive Branch. I believe they fully intend to do that. That's the necessary first step preceding any Impeachment. Whistleblowers will be welcome. Impeachment comes later. I think the Dems are smart for not crying impeachment at the outset. First, develop facts that no reasonable American can deny are impeachable offenses. Then "reluctantly and sadly" impeach for crimes no one can deny...or condone. That way they will look like that are moved by reason, patriotism and a desire for justice, not mere partisanship, and the country, even Republican ex-bots, will follow. Maybe I'm just engaging in wishful thinking, but if I were the Dems and wanted to assure Impeachment when it comes, I'd be introducing myself exactly the way they are doing. They don't want to be seen repeating the mostly partisan circus of the Clinton impeachment. They may want to actually get Bush for real, and leave him no political refuge to flee to. I hope so, anyway.

I don't believe it will happen.......after all, the liar in chief could 'unseal' all the previously sealed papers of his, the perverts, and the wimps. The perverts can't afford to be opened if the battleax wants a run at the top slot. I rather think they mean it--if they can 'show' the sheeple that they can 'git things done', they'll be in power for another 40 years or so. I think they realize, too, that the senate is too close to think they would have a chance--just look at how badly the 'r's did over the pervert. All that said, these polls mean didly squat. I couldn't begin to count the times there was some friggin alert at tos1 to go 'freep' a poll cause they didn't like or they did like what was being asked.
