NEW YORK (Reuters) - Most Americans believe illegal immigrants should be allowed to become guest workers and eventually U.S. citizens, but Congress should do more to close the border to stop more illegals entering the country, according to a new poll published on Tuesday.

The nationwide poll, conducted by Quinnipiac University, found that by a margin of 69 percent to 27 percent, American voters say illegal immigrants should be allowed into a guest worker program with the ability to work toward citizenship over a period of several years. Such a guest worker program had wide support among voters of all political stripes.

But 71 percent of voters said Congress must do more to deal with illegal immigrants entering the country.

"Two-thirds of Americans favor a guest-worker program with a path to citizenship," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "Maybe a lot of Americans think back to the stories of their own immigrant families."

"But Americans also want to close the borders to keep out illegal immigrants in the future," Carroll added. "There are big margins for a tougher border policy among all parties and among men and women."

Sixty-five percent of American voters support -- and 32 percent oppose -- laws in their own community to fine businesses hiring illegal immigrants, according to the poll.

"Americans think more needs to be done to deal with illegal immigration, and they want it done in their own neighborhoods as well," Carroll said.

The poll was conducted from November 13 to 19 among 1,623 registered voters and had a margin of error of 2.4 percentage points.

the americans do not understand that the guest-worker program is an indentured servant program and the implications of that.

they also do not understand that these guest-workers will be taking americans' jobs at a time when jobs are becoming more scarce.

they also do not understand that the guest worker programs will merely legalize the existing flow of immigrants.

I wonder how many of these people polled are actually American Citizens? By Citizens, I mean by birth of which they weren't anchor children?

These polls mean nothing as they are a fraction of the population. If it were put to a vote where American Citizens could vote on it as an issue, I would bet that it would be soundly defeated.

What we need to do is to translate what each proposal for illegal alien amnesty is into what it would do to America. We currently are paying for imports by printing dollars. When the dollar collapses, wages and pensions will be cut 50% and 90% respectively. But, any amnesty for illegal aliens will increase the supply of labor and cut wages even further. That is why I say that amnesty backers want to cut wages 60% or more.

My guess is they never called a single American citizen in the Southwest.

Between 1981 & 1984 the dollar fell by aa large percentage, I think 30-40% relative to other major currencies. and what actually happened was unemployment rate dropped dramatically. wages went up. in 1984 we experienced annual growth in gdp of 7.2% which was highest in US history.

If the dollar declines dramatically, then it will make all imports much more expensive. But it will also spur growth in the domestic economy dramatically. It will not raise the price of goods & services generated by the domestic economy, just those generated by foreign countries.

there is no reason for it to hurt pensions or to lower wages. It would in fact cause upware pressure on wages.

IMO the media & the politicians are presenting 'guest-workers' as an alternative to the current system where illegal workers can work freely in our economy. The people don't understand that the guest worker program would just legalize the flow of new workers to work for employers as the employers desire. It is better to have illegal workers in the economy able to switch jobs freely than it is to have legal workers in the economy not able to switch jobs when they are dissatisfied with the employer. The guest worker program will make them semi-slaves and give them no alternative but to work for one employer whether that employer mis-treats them or not. The guest worker program would enable employers to suppress wages. You suppress wages for some and you do it for many.

The guest worker program is just a system for subverting the free market in labor and making a larger portion of our work-force peasants.

Sounds very oppressive for all.

Inflation will cut ourchasing power until our balance of trade is zero. I would expect prices to go up at least 1,000%. We will not be able to compensate the 37,000,000 who are on social security. We need to import raw materials because our population is beyond what we can support by 150,000,000. The period in the 1980s was a sort run and was before the dollar collapsed which I am expecting in less than 37 months.
