Religion See other Religion Articles Title: Defeating Threats To Freedom: Violent Islamists and their supporters threaten our lives, our values, and our children Defeating Threats To Freedom Violent Islamists and their supporters threaten our lives, our values, and our children THE THREAT The threat comes from violent men who arrogantly claim to know what God wants, and who seek to impose their poverty-stricken, abusive belief system on the whole world. Jesus once remarked that "you will know them by their fruits" (Matthew 7:20). The founder of Islam had thousands of people killed for not adopting his religion. Indeed, of the founders of the world's major religions, he is the only one who practiced and advocated violence, leading, it is estimated, 25 battles between 623 and 632 AD, when he died. THE CALIPHATE OF DESPAIR Subsequently, violent Islamists invaded what were then the Christian lands of Syria, Palestine, Egypt, and North Africa, and converted their peoples with the sword. They conquered Persia, and in 711, they invaded Spain, where their rule resulted in burned out convents and monasteries, raped women, crucifixions in Cordoba, and beheadings in Toledo, Barcelona, Seville, and Zamora. Oppressive taxes were laid on those who refused to convert, and daily humiliations. In 721 violent Islamists invaded France, slaughtering and enslaving before being stopped by Charles Martel leading the French at the Battle of Tours (or Poitiers) in 732. A century later violent Islamists devastated Sicily and coastal and inland towns in Italy, sacking, plundering, and burning, setting fire to churches and libraries, and killing thousands of men, women, and children. Right or wrong, the Christian Crusades were not unprovoked attacks on Islam, but counteroffensives, which failed. There were Muslims in these centuries who did fine things. Some of them were mathematicians who developed the Hindu-Arabic numeric system that is the basis of the number system we use today. Some of them designed very beautiful gardens. In the 8th century, Muslims translated Aristotle and Plato into Arabic. (Greek philosophy had already been translated into Latin by Boethius, by Eastern Christians, and Irish monks.) And there were, of course, many good Muslim men and women who peacefully raised families. But since today's violent Islamists persist in nostalgically revisiting the Caliphate, it is well to remember how it was for all those people who were not Muslim, and resisted conversion. It is well to remember what happened to the Jews in Spain in 1066, a supposed "golden age", when they were exiled and slaughtered, and to remember what happened to the brilliant Islamist Ibn Rushd, known as Averroes, who tried to reconcile reason and Islamic thought. Averroes who lived in what is now Spain in the 12th century was banished. The brilliant philosophical movement based on free will and reason which had flowered between the 9th and 12th centuries, particularly in Persia, withered. INVADING EUROPE AND INDIA Starting in the 13th century and continuing into the 15th century, violent Islamists from the Ottoman Empire invaded Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Albania, North Africa, and Constantinople – all accompanied by the usual infernos, rapes, enslavements of whole populations, and beheadings. Boy children were forcibly taken from their Christian parents, to be turned into slaves and brought up as Muslims who served in the civil service and in the military as Janissaries. By then violent Islamists had already invaded India in what is regarded as one of the bloodiest periods in human history. Between 800 AD and 1700 AD, they destroyed temples, slaughtered Hindus, and abducted Hindu women and children to slave markets. Millions of Hindus were converted to Islam by the sword. In Africa, Islam was spread using the slave-trade as a tool. Theoretically believers could not be enslaved, so entire African tribes converted to Islam in an attempt to escape the depredations of Arab slave traders. Spain ended the Islamic state in 1492, but for the next three centuries Muslims in North Africa hunted Christians in the Mediterranean and on the coasts of Europe, and sold them as slaves. It is estimated that 1.25 million Christians became slaves, among them the great writer Cervantes, who was ransomed after five years in bondage. In the 16th century the Ottoman Empire tried to establish an Islamic state across Europe. In 1529 it invaded Austria. Forced to retreat, its soldiers slaughtered 30,000 farmers. By 1543, it had conquered most of Hungary. In 1565 the Empire besieged Malta, but the Knights of Malta, the Hospitaller Order of St. John, aided by volunteers from Sicily and by desperate women and children, drove them off. In 1571 the Ottoman Empire prepared for a fullscale invasion of Italy. Venice and her Western allies, led by the young, brave Don Juan of Austria, met the Ottoman Navy at the Battle of Lepanto, and defeated it. They were helped by the Christian slaves on the Turkish galleys who used their chains to fight their oppressors. In 1683 violent Islamists made another attempt to create an Islamic State in Europe by besieging Vienna. Though outnumbered 20 to 1, the exhausted and starving Austrians refused to surrender. The Islamists launched their assault on September 11. (Make of that date what you will.) The forces of the Hapsburgs, along with Saxons, Bavarians, Franconians, Swabians, Serbs, and Poles, arrived to help the Viennese as the attack began. On September 12, the Polish King, Jan Sobieski, led the successful cavalry charge that turned the invasion into a rout. In the 18th century, the Knights of Malta defended Europe from Muslim pirates operating in the Mediterranean and the North Atlantic. When Malta fell to Napoleon in 1798, pirates terrorized the western Mediterranean until quelled by the Royal Navy and the Navy and Marine Corps of the young United States. Greece, with the help of the Royal Navy, was the first nation to throw off the yoke of Ottoman tyranny. Beginning in the late 19th century and ending only in the 1920s, the Ottoman Empire carried out the genocidal slaughter of an estimated one million Christian Armenians. In 1922, violent Islamists massacred 100,000 Greek Christians at Smyrna. We mention these events because today violent Islamists say they intend to bring back the Caliphate that once stretched from what is now Iraq to Spain. Indeed they plan to turn Britain into a Muslim state and conquer the whole world. Since 1980 they have mounted gruesome attacks on the people of Britain, Indonesia, the Philippines, Denmark, Bali, Spain, East Timor, Australia, Kenya, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Thailand, Iraq, India, France, Nigeria, the Netherlands, Sudan, Tanzania, Kenya, Holland, Russia, and America. TEDIOUS TYRANNY Those of us who look at the fruits of their governments wonder why anyone would want to be ruled by a theocratic tyranny that debases women, humiliates and marginalizes non-Muslims, prevents representative government and free speech, and, as if this were not enough, suffocates innovation, and causes widespread impoverishment. Their idea of a centralized authoritarian state enforcing blanket obedience to an all-encompassing ideology reminds us of fascism. Violent Islamists and their supporters have brought poverty, suffering, and death to many parts of the world, a silent testimony to the misshapen ugliness and fruitlessness of their idea of a totalitarian Islam. Many believe that Palestinians have been treated unfairly. Palestinians should obtain their rights, but this is not the reason that violent Islamists plague the world's peoples today. Violent Islamists have been waging war for 1400 years, and for most of that time they controlled the Middle East and Jerusalem. Violent Islamists are fueled by an inability to change the corrupt and unjust governments of their own societies, by greed for loot and power, by a sense of failure, envy, and false grievance, and by a warped view of God that refuses God's gifts of freedom and reason. They also tend to dislike the overt sexual degradation exhibited in many parts of the world. There are people sympathetic to this last point of view, but not to the other notions held by violent Islamists. Violent, and usually jobless, Islamists have attacked Buddhists in Thailand, Hindus in India, Christians and Jews and secularists wherever they find them, and even other Muslims, slaughtering innocents and drowning justice and mercy in blood. They have beheaded care workers. They have used children and women as human shields. Their code of behaviour is focused on outward compliance and savage punishments for supposed waywardness. Imprisoned in a fantastical and murderous mindset that misinterprets God, they destroy respect for Islam. They pose a severe and crucial question to men and women around the world. SHARIA SHAMBLES We want to create happy families, vibrant arts, justice and prosperity for all, creative innovation, learning, the celebration of peaceful communities and countries, inspiring achievements, and cures for illness, to name but a few. Violent Islamists and their supporters aim to inflict on us their version of Islamic law, sharia. Sharia allows polygamy, slavery, sexual relations with slaves, amputation for theft, flogging for drinking alcohol, the killing of daughters who want to marry non-Muslims, the murder of gays, being stoned to death for adultery, and being killed for converting to another faith. In short, sharia is not compatible with life and culture in any free country. It is not compatible with Britain's Common Law or the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. If Islamists now living in Britain and the other English-speaking countries obtain sharia, those countries are doomed. IS ISLAM THE PROBLEM? According to historians, repressive rule, corruption, contempt for work, particularly work with the hands, slavery, education limited to small numbers of people, the oppression of women, and non-productive economies pre-date Islam in the Middle East. Indeed this description has applied to many societies in the history of the world. We believe that most people in the world want to live lives of freedom, happiness, and purpose. Unfortunately violent Islamists want to destroy their hopes. How will we respond to them? Our Response No country "can long resist radical Islam without some sustaining faith of its own, a faith it will not find unless it makes up its mind to look for it," writes Richard Fernandez. We now live in a West where faith has gone missing, and feelings and opinions rank supreme; where all the great stories are suspect, and have been replaced with any story that happens to come along; and where tolerance is rewarded by violent fanaticism. “Only a foolish optimist can deny the dark realities of the moment.” Yet in this eerie darkness, as we wander in exile in our own land, we have many powers. Our powers are freedom of conscience, rational thought, compassion, freedom of speech, truthfulness in word and deed, respect and affection for others, the making and keeping of promises, the rule of just law, representative government, hospitality, hope, and the willingness to die if necessary to preserve our freedoms, protect our country, and save the innocent. These are but a few of our powers. Our powers are idealistic and practical. They work. We will defend ourselves from attack, we will protect our children, and we will return good for evil. We will do this in ways that are practical and spiritual. Our Story For fifty years we have been hypnotized into believing that Britain and Brits are always wrong. Listening to a warped story we have become weak and ill. We have heard enough about what we did wrong, and all too little about what we did right. Britain has a luminous and compelling story. Brits have fought for freedom for more than a thousand years. They developed just laws and democracy, abolished slavery, invented much of the modern world, and creature a wealth of literature, music, art, and sports. Despite the usual roster of human imperfections, an extraordinary number of Brits have done great and good things. 1) Share the Story We begin by sharing the true stories of courage and innovation, creativity and fortitude, tenderness, good humour, and spirit that reflect our powers. To say that we have a story is to say that we have an identity. It is a remarkable, life-giving identity, though ignored by the political and media elites who seem to loathe the best of the Brits. We will share the stories of Brits at their best with everyone and particularly with children. Children especially need and deserve true accounts of idealism, courage, and achievement. Lacking them they become estranged from their country and community, and lose their sense of self and and their courage. We will teach children the stories and powers that will help them to succeed and be happy, that will help them to heal and sustain their country and the world. These powers are rooted in the belief that dignity, freedom, justice and reason are given to every man and woman by God, and that God calls us to use and defend them. It is but simple justice to acknowledge the generations of people who created Britain and the social capital on which we depend for our safety, freedom, creativity, and prosperity. It is time to recover our inheritance. It is time to stand up for our story. 2) End diversity indoctrination The ideal of "cultural diversity" is an intellectual lacuna. It means nothing until the specifics of cultural diversity are examined in the light of reason and moral values and their contribution to the well-being of the individual and society. Rather than teaching vague notions about diversity, we suggest teaching children and newcomers to Britain the profound achievements of Brits living in a free society. See, for instance, LIBERTY! THE TIMELINE » OR The Freedom Network » In an Alice-in-Wonderland world, multicultural thought insists that the new land to which an immigrant comes has to adapt to the immigrant. We affirm that immigration obliges the immigrant to change and assimilate to his new land. Brits will make clear that though we aspire to tolerance, we are not so tolerant that we will tolerate intolerance. We must make it clear that despite 30 years of multiculturalism and cultural relativism, we are confident of the virtues essential to a free society. 3) End media bias The false and relentless anti-Western bias among elites must be named for what it is – a threat to our lives and an attack on our minds. The juvenile eagerness of the media to promote both the EU superstate and Islam and to demean British and Judeo-Christian civilisation must be replaced with fair, objective, and hard-hitting reporting and analysis. British media and the BBC in particular have been directly implicated in arousing Islamist violence by falsely slanting coverage of Britain, the United States, and Israel. The BBC is skeptical and adversarial about every British institution except itself, the European Union, and violent Islamists. Instead of questioning, defeating, and discrediting terrorist ideas, much of British media promotes them. It does not demand accountability from violent Islamists for their denigration of women, their refusal to allow religious freedom or their violent response to perceived insults. Further, and possibly worse, the BBC does not communicate the ideas and feelings of moderate Muslims. Like much of the media, it has a predilection for blood and violence. It prefers to give the people circuses rather than news. Glenn Reynolds » trenchantly observes that "Terrorism is an information war disguised as a military conflict, and media coverage is an essential part of the terrorist plan." The media's supine manipulation by violent Islamists must end. 4) Engage in a dialogue based on respect and reciprocity Engage in an authentic and sincere dialogue with moderate Muslims that is built on respect for the dignity of every human person, created in the image and likeness of God. Tell the stories of Muslim respect for life and Muslim heroism in the face of violent Islamists. Here we think about the Turkish Muslim family that saved the grandparents of our Armenian Christian friends from certain death. We are sure there are other stories like this. Dialogue requires mutual respect and reciprocity in all spheres. It requires the defence of religious freedom. Your Home In his Nobel Prize acceptance speech in 1970, Alexandr Solzhenitsyn remarked, "Nations are the wealth of mankind, its collective personalities; the very least of them wears its own special colours and bears within itself a special facet of divine intention." The nation of Britain has a romantic, eccentric, brave, down-to-earth, and creative personality, hosts of interesting people whose liberty was paid for in blood and affirmed by law, beautiful and fertile country, and exciting cities. It has been a home where people could live with a sense of purpose and happiness, in freedom and safety. As we write, Britain is being torn apart by the EU, which is dictating 80% of her laws; she is being sunk by the number of immigrants who are arriving daily, though some of them love her; she is being betrayed by her government, which is deliberately trying to destroy her memory, and to infantalize her people; and she is being threatened by violent Islamists. These threats are all interconnected. Britain has a brilliant, thousand-year history of accepting immigrants who in the main have been integrated into British society. In the last thirty years, immigrants have been arriving at an unprecedented rate. More immigrants have arrived in the last thirty years than in all of Britain's previous history. A high proportion of these immigrants are Muslim, who have left their home countries to avoid the consequences of living in despotic states. Britain has no power to control this influx because immigration policy is decided behind closed doors by the EU. About immigration it is fair to say that you would find it difficult if a dozen people you did not know suddenly arrived from abroad to camp out in your home, demanded part of your pay check while they looked for work, and had no interest in learning the customs or traditions of your house. This is the position today in Britain. Millions of immigrants from Europe, Asia, and Africa are arriving in every little town, city, and county, and you are expected to pay for their housing, child benefits, education, and medical care out of your salary. No country can hope to assimilate millions of immigrants overnight, but the British government and the European Union insist that Brits will take them whatever the cost. The really outrageous aspect of all this is that among these people are violent Islamists who want to blow Brits up, and while they make their plans, Brits are paying for their living expenses. We will respond to the combined threats of the EU, excessive immigration, and violent Islamists in these ways: 1)We Will Defend the British Constitution The freedoms of Brits are confirmed in the ancient Charter of Liberties, the Westminster Council, Magna Carta, the Coronation Oath, the Provisions of Oxford and Westminster, the Statute of Marlborough, the Petition of Right, the Habeas Corpus Act, the Declaration of Rights, Bill of Rights, Toleration Act, Triennial Act, Act of Settlement, Act of Union, Statute of Anne, "Hogarth's Act", the Great Reform, Municipal Reform Act, Suffrage, and Common Law. These charters, covenants, and laws affirm our freedoms, and establish just law, independent judges and juries, and representative government. They form the body of the British Constitution. It is time to affirm that the British Constitution and our freedoms belong to us, and we will defend them. 2) We will elect MPs who will protect our Constitution and our country Parliamentary politics have degenerated into egotistical competitiveness, internecine struggle, self-aggrandizement, and self-indulgence. At a time of national crisis, when our country is exposed to threats, this is suicide. We must elect MPs who love Britain, will defend the British Constitution, and will take Britain out of the European Union. 3) Britain will leave the European Union Britain will leave the European Union which presently dictates her immigration and asylum policy, and is an immediate threat to the British Constitution. Britain will continue to trade with Europe, but her people will make their own decisions about their country's future. Parliament's simple repeal of the 1972 Act that took Britain in will bring her out of the EU. 4) Britain will secede from the European Convention on Human Rights and repeal the Human Rights Act These are unnecessary since Britain's Constitution and Common Law protect human rights. 5) Britain's government will lower taxes and reduce excessive government regulations Britain's government will lower taxes and reduce the excessive government regulations that depress an economy and raise unemployment. The static, socialist economy of France has sent many Muslim young men into the streets for lack of jobs, and has isolated them in ghettos. Britain must take a different road, and the best way to do that is to get government out of the road so the free market economy can move and work. 6) Britain will secure her borders Britain will withdraw from the 1951 Convention on the Status of Refugees, an act ratified by Britain in 1955 when asylum seekers were rare. Britain will establish her own laws on who may enter Britain and who may become a citizen. This may sound unfriendly, but it is impossible to welcome into Britain everyone who wishes to come. Consequently decisions will have to be made on who and how many people can safely enter. After a flurry of embarkation controls following 7/7 we find there is no check on who actually enters or leaves the country, so we do not know who is illegally overstaying, or should not have arrived in the first place. Again, controlling our borders may sound unwelcoming, but consider your own home. Do you want to host vast numbers of strangers all on the same weekend, and continue to be their host for years to come? Britain is larger than your house, but as a relatively small island there are physical limits to her hospitality. Let's keep Britain hospitable. Let's also keep her afloat, and safe. 7) Britain will regain her ability to defend herself from attack There are those who believe using force is always wrong. We believe that using force to defend ourselves, our children, and our civilisation may be necessary. Violent Islamists must be denied training, supplies, money, and time. British Muslims must say "Not in my name," and defend their country. Young men who go abroad to receive indoctrination and training from violent Islamists and who return to Britain must be identified, charged with conspiring to overthrow the elected government, and brought to trial. Britain's Armed Forces will receive adequate support in force structure, equipment, numbers, and morale. Ditto her police, who will be depoliticised and who can at last be excused from their diversity training, and will return to patrolling the streets. Britain will act with other nations to disrupt terrorist communication and financial networks, and to destroy physical infrastructures, weapons and training bases. At the same time, Britain will press for freedom of movement of people and goods throughout the West Bank and Gaza and the access of Palestinians with foreign passports who have a role to play in Palestine's economic development. At home Britain will return to low-tax, small government policies. These lower the cost of capital and raise after-tax rewards, thereby increasing investment, productivity, and prosperity. Britain will restructure her foreign aid to focus on achievable goals in helping establish prosperous and free countries with constitutional freedoms and just law, including property rights. In contrast to the EU, which is highly protectionist, and has damaged Third World peoples, Britain's foreign trade will be based on the principles of freedom and fairness. Further, Muslims are allowed freedom of worship in Britain, but Christians and Jews are not allowed freedom of worship in many Muslim countries. Britain must firmly demand reciprocity. 8) Britain Will Protect Our Lives and Our Civil Rights Simultaneously Britain will act to defend her people with the truth and moral clarity that are as important as military force. She will protect civil liberties and our lives. These recommendations go hand in hand with just laws. See Defeating Violent Islamists, Part Two » Our Response To summarize our response in Part One: We remember our story. We defend the British Constitution. We elect MPs who will protect our Constitution and our country. Britain leaves the European Union. Britain secedes from the European Convention on Human Rights and repeals the Human Rights Act. Britain secures her borders and implements a wise immigration policy . People who live in Britain affirm they are loyal to Britain's Constitution. Britain regains her ability to defend herself from attack. Britain protects our civil liberties and our lives. These recommendations go hand in hand with just laws. Just Laws King Alfred defended his people against alien Danish invaders, and succeeded in integrating them into society by converting them to Christianity. He did not believe in multiculturalism, because although the Danes and Saxons were closely related peoples, it was impossible for them to live together in peace while the Danes ignored the laws that Christians in England followed. Equally it is impossible for Britain to observe both Common Law and sharia. They are diametrically opposed. Common Law, the law that belongs to us all, protects us all. Among its many essential protections, Common Law forbids slavery, defends the free formation of trusts, protects property rights, and brings the accused to trial in a fair and just process. If we do not defend our Common Law, we will leave every Brit, including British people of the Islamic faith, vulnerable to violent Islamists. We suggest the following tough but fair actions: 1)Apply Common Law to everyone equally The Metropolitan Police ignored the incitement to murder being made by violent Islamists and their supporters after publication of the Danish cartoons, despite laws requiring their arrest. It was Muslims such as Dr Ghayasuddin Siddiqui who demanded action from the police, asserting that the demonstrators are "trying to incite others and to make criminal acts legitimate. The time has come to say enough is enough". As the Charter of Liberties affirmed in 1100, no one is above or beyond the law. There can be no turning a blind eye to crimes or ignoring “no-go” ghettos where Brits who need our protection are powerless before violent Islamists. Supposedly minor exclusions from Common Law should not be permitted. The exemption for the inhumane slaughter of animals for halal meat must end, since it is not consistent with Common Law, which reflects British values regarding the treatment of animals. Consequently, halal meat would not be served in schools, prisons, or other public institutions. We must act firmly and consistently to affirm that Common Law is the law of our land. Those given responsibility for seeing the laws are obeyed must fulfill their responsibilities. We suggest that given how well firmness to principles works, we put firmness into action. 2)Repeal the Race Laws With the repeal of the Race Laws every person will once again have equality under Common Law, and every person will be judged not by his skin colour but by his words and actions. 3)Bring to trial those who incite violence The incitement to murder in the cause of Islam is occuring in mosques, prisons, on the internet, and abroad, where young Muslims are going for indoctrination. Any person, including any imam, who advocates violence must be charged with incitment to crime, brought to trial, and/or deported to his country of origin. Any newspapers, televisions, or publishing house advocating an Islamic takeover of Britain should be closed down. The publishers of textbooks for children that describe Wahhabi Islam, which promotes violence, should be brought to trial. 4)Revoke the rights of foreign criminals Any foreigner or person with a dual nationality found guilty of a criminal offence should have his right of abode or British citizenship revoked, and be subject to deportation to his country of origin. 5)Reform the welfare laws Welfare hurts children and infantalizes adults. It has been understood since the 19th century in Britain, and since the 1990s in America, that providing no incentive to marry or for couples to stay together to bring up their children, and warehousing children at public expense harms children most of all. They often grow up to be unhappy, poor, and criminal. It is mad to maintain government policies with so awful a result. Britain's welfare state attracts large numbers of people, then reduces them to hostile dependence, marginalizing them so they feel excluded from the country's creative energy. This is particularly true for unemployed men, but welfare has a negative effect on the prosperity of everyone. We recommend that welfare be drastically reduced. A portion of the money now spent on the dole would be applied to job training and job searches. 6) Change immigration rules to protect young people from forced marriages Change immigration rules on marriage to protect young Asians from arranged marriages, and prevent the creation of ghettos. We recommend the following changes, which have been positively incorporated in Denmark, and which we quote almost verbatim from Migration Watch UK » (a) In order for a citizen of Britain and an immigrant from another country to qualify for marriage, both parties must have reached the age of 24; (b) It must be clear that the marriage is not forced; (c) The marriage contract should explicitly permit divorce at the wife’s instigation; (d) The residence and support requirements should be substantially tightened and properly enforced; (e) Residence should be granted initially for a maximum of 2 years. Permanent residence should not be granted until the couple have lived together in the country for at least 7 years; (f) Those whose arranged marriages end in divorce should not be permitted to sponsor the immigration of further marriage partners. 7) Refuse to allocate public money for Islamic schools or madrasses. Britain is by law a Christian nation. Public money will not be allocated for Islamic schools or madrasses. This mirrors the situation in Islamic countries where there is no funding for Christian schools. The law relating to schooling and truancy will be enforced. Muslim children will not be allowed to miss months of schooling by making long trips to Pakistan and elsewhere. 8) Strictly enforce the law that prohibits genital mutilation of girls 9) Protect Muslims who leave Islam Violent Islamists threaten to kill those who leave Islam. Britain is a country with freedom of conscience, and we will protect those who leave Islam or convert. 10)Ask for the allegiance of every British citizen Publish a summary of the British Constitution, and ask every British citizen to support it, and to defend freedom. Helpful as these actions will be, we cannot live by law alone. Onward When Christ told us to love our neighbour as ourselves, He assumed we loved ourselves. Our country is our home. Its size and strength gives us the best chance we have to be safe and free. We cannot be kind or respectful to other people and other countries unless we respect and love ourselves and our own country. We stand true to the powers that give us and our children life, and bear witness with all our might to the transforming power of love. As described in the Old and New Testaments, love gives us the power to treat others fairly and to act with justice, reason, and common sense; to make and keep promises; to endure hardship; to forgive, to speak the truth, and to hope.

Interesting piece. The author ignores the fact that, for more centuries than did the Muslim societies, Christian societies shared many of the characteristics of which he complains. Frequent war, slavery, forced conversion, oppressive taxation, etc., were staples of Christian Societies from the time of Constantine until the West gave up its third world colonies after WWII. The author makes the interesting error of referring to himself and his compatriots as Brits. He is almost undoubetdly not British, if he lives East of Wales and south of Scotland. The Angles, Saxons, and Jutes pushed the Brits out of England so fast that these proto-English absorbed only a handful of British words.
