I read something about how American B-Ball players just a tad shy of being good enough for the NBA end up in Iran playing in their pro leagues. Then came the part about how all Iranians love Americans and love America and if there are any problems it is just with the government of America.

I remember thinking to myself that Americans don't have a mutual love for the Iranian people. Indeed- the average American despises them while knowing next to nothing about that country or people or culture.

I was at a dinner last week where one of the hosts said she was surprised that Iranians seemed so human and "like us" on Ted Koppel's special. That gives you an idea of how Middle Easterners and Central Asian people are viewed by Americans.

Funny, guess the time when the Iranians were "just like us" during the 60's and 70's under the Shah just escaped her.

A civilization, Persia, that was ancient when JC was a toddler, and that had already existed for literally centuries when Alexander traipsed all over it on the way to India.

I imagine she may have heard the word "Shah" before but couldn't tell you anything much beyond he was a leader of some sort in the ME. People like her are not bad people inherently- but they are demonstrative of the incredible levels of ignorance of anything foreign in this country and their casual attitudes almost relfexively display a sort of Chauvanism and hubris that is literally off the charts (and this person is a self described "liberal"). This person is a freakin scientist by the way- a PHD holder.

In fact- the company I was keeping that day was pretty much a roomful of unreconstructed liberals. All hated Bush with a white hot hate. But at the same time it was a shallow hate- a manufactured hate of the two party fraud. They spewed talking points lines. They didn't hate Bush because of the Patriot Act, or torture, or the WOT. They hated Bush because they percieve him as a dimwit from Texas- uncouth, who hates the birdies and trees and wants to kill old people on Medicare and because he started the wrong war with the wrong Arabs (they all love the war in Afghanistan and think other countries should be attacked).

And another guest was talking about Iran and he said that Iran's leader was just plain crazy. Huh? Why was he "crazy"? No specifics- that is just what everyone is suppossed to believe about the leader of Iran. Not even up for discussion. Our media just implants these baseless beliefs in everyone. These "liberals" were complaining that Bush had failed because Iran was about to build the bomb and how Iran is the real "threat"- not Iraq. It was preposterous. It's like they simply read off cue cards to get their views.

Not for a moment is it considered by these people that their base assumptions are wrong- that the US is fundamentally in the wrong- or that the US could be lying. Not for a second.

I just kept my mouth shut by the way. It is pretty much useless to even start in depth disucssions with people who are so enthralled of the two party fraud.

At some point, people's ignorance stops being a defence (not saying you're doing that.

And that reflexive Anti Bush Anti Southern hatred; have experienced it first hand, it mirrors similar comments I've heard in the South about New Englanders. What makes the liberal ones more galling is that they do consider themselves better and smarter, not realizing that they base their viewpoints on a similar set of assumptions based on stereotypes and prejudices.

Did confront someone on Iran's "nutty" leader; are we prepared to attack Iran and willing to accept the responsiblity for the ensuing carnage.

No decent answer received.

The I Ching says that during the time when inferior people are in power, one is wise to veil his light. Or something like that.
