I know about our state, Chrissie......and in my county, 92% of the land is in government hands....mostly the feds. This means that there is 8% in private hands that has to fund all the goodies 'needed' in a free society. The fedgubmit has played hide n seek with the PILT taxes which have helped support the schools. I was privileged to meet Dick Carver, Nye county, Nevada, Commissioner, who along with his two other cohorts put the feds on notice they couldn't just shut down a county road (connecting one side of the county to the other--without the road, a relatively short trip became a very big deal to county residents) without suffering consequences. In this case, the 'consequences' was the county passing resolutions that the feds, i.e., BLM people, couldn't use county roads for moving heavy equipment. They confiscated a federal grader (or bulldozer). Then they also gave the fedgubmint time to remove the blocked road or they would......and they did. Dick drove the Bulldozer/Grader moving the dirt and rocks that had been put in the roadway to block it off, while a federal officer was trying to get him to stop. The county filed federal court action using the Equal Footing Doctrine....and initially a lot of states and counties were interested. IIRC, the AG of Alaska was gung ho in joining the suit, providing legal assistance, etc., but I think they were gotten to by the feds.....eventually just about everybody bailed out of the suit. I can't remember how the court deal came down.......I'm sure it was in the feds favor. Dick always maintained that in the public lands matters, the S/C had indicated that the right questions weren't being asked. Had all those who were so gung ho had hung together and stayed the course, the whole thing might have evolved differently. BTW, when I met Mr. Carver, it was at a public meeting at Challis, about 60 miles from here. And Richard Mack was with him.
