Resistance See other Resistance Articles Title: Police: Estranged husband killed woman, 35 Police: Estranged husband killed woman, 35 Mother of three fatally stabbed in front of 9-year-old son By TERRI SANGINITI, The News Journal Posted Tuesday, December 5, 2006 At 2:45 a.m., the little boy should have been asleep. But the loud noises coming from his mother's bedroom woke him up, so he went to investigate. What the 9-year-old saw, he later told police, was his dad on top of his mom, stabbing her with a screwdriver. He couldn't protect her, but he could run. So in the middle of the night, he was running to a neighbor's house in Lake Shore Village, north of Cheswold. It was past 3 a.m. when he knocked on their door and asked them to call 911, saying his dad had just stabbed his mom. By the time police arrived, it was too late. Wendy A. Kane, 35, already was dead from 20 or more stab wounds to her neck and upper chest. Police found a Phillips screwdriver near her body. It seemed the restraining orders against her estranged husband couldn't protect her either. Early Monday morning, Wendy Kane became the state's 53rd homicide victim this year, making 2006 now tied with 2005 for the most homicides in one year. •* * Wendy and Thomas F. Kane, also 35, got married 10 years ago; their son together was born nine years ago. But they were having problems and separated recently, Thomas Kane's cousin, Ted Sammons, said Monday. "He moved out a month ago and was living with his mother in Richardson Park," Sammons said. In early November, Wendy Kane got a temporary restraining order against Thomas Kane, and on Nov. 9, he was arrested on suspicion of violating that order, Delaware State Police spokesman Cpl. Jeff Oldham said. Police responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle near the Garrisons Lake boat ramp found Thomas Kane, whose last known address was in the 100 block of Glenrich Ave. in Christiana Hundred, in his pickup truck. Kane told police he was there because he was looking in the weeds for some things he'd lost, Oldham said. But when police investigated, they found the area he was checking was just over a hill -- about 100 yards -- from Wendy Kane's home, Oldham said. He was arrested on suspicion of violating a temporary domestic violence order and, because of drugs police found in his truck, suspicion of possession of cocaine and controlled narcotics, Oldham said. Wendy Kane's father, Curtis McKay, said his son-in-law had accused his daughter of having an affair and was harassing her "constantly." The restraining order, McKay said, offered no protection from his verbal attacks. "He had been harassing her by telephone, and [New Castle County] police said that wasn't considered violent, and there wasn't anything they could do," McKay said. New Castle County police could not immediately be reached for comment. Injured in fall On Nov. 21, Wendy Kane got an active protection order against Thomas Kane, issued by Kent County Family Court. The next day, he was in an accident in which he fell two stories, fracturing his neck, his cousin said. He was in the hospital for more than a week and has been on medication for his injuries, Sammons said. The last time Sammons talked to his cousin was Wednesday, he said. Thomas Kane told him at that time that he had made a decision to leave his wife, even though he still loved her. "He seemed happy that this was going to end," he said. "I thought they were going to separate and divorce, and they would move on. Now this. We're all in shock." Early Monday morning, police suspect, Thomas Kane pried open a basement window in his estranged wife's house and sneaked inside. He went to Wendy Kane's upstairs bedroom and attacked her, stabbing her several times with a knife and screwdriver, police said. She got away briefly, but he caught her and dragged her back to continue his attack. It was about then that the noises awoke their 9-year-old and he ran to get help. Facing murder charge When police arrived, both Thomas Kane and his son were in the house. When police ordered the man outside, he jumped out of a second-story window and tried to flee, police said. When police caught him, they found he was carrying a screwdriver and a 9-inch steak knife. He was charged with first-degree murder, possession of a deadly weapon during a felony, first-degree burglary, possession of a deadly weapon by a person prohibited, endangering the welfare of a child, resisting arrest and criminal contempt of a Family Court order, Oldham said. He was being held without bail in the Delaware Correctional Center pending a Friday hearing on the charges. Meanwhile, McKay said the system failed his only daughter. "My feelings are the system tells a woman, here's a [restraining order], you're protected," McKay said. "But the people who you think are going to make you safe are not there. It's the biggest farce there ever was."
Poster Comment: One issue that really aggravates my neuroses is restraining orders, Protection From Abuse orders or PFAs as they are called. Too many times here in DE I've seen this. The state goes through all the pomp of issuing them and, as I told our former attorney general on a local talk show years ago they aren't worth the paper on which they're printed. Years ago an estranged husband entered a little dime store where his wife was working and killed her with a shotgun blast. He then went to his truck and took his own life. Their son was also in the store because mom didn't have anyone to watch him so he saw his mother murdered a most violent way, and when the police arrived the little 8 yr old was sitting on the curb crying his heart out. The story was big enough to bring Philadelphia network talking heads and satellite trucks down for live feeds, and one Asian chick said "As a last resort women should leave the state to escape abusive spouses!" I swear people, I almost put my foot through the TV screen! These same system pimps would collapse with the vapors when I suggested that women get trained and and arm themselves, because without exception an abusive soon-to-be-homicidal maniac husband or boyfriend never settles the score with the little woman in the presence of the police. And more often than not the PFA just pushes an already stressed man over the edge. The system goes out of its way to emasculate men during rancorous divorces, and they'll demand that spouses surrender their firearms. But, the only ones who do are those who wouldn't divorce her with a shotgun in the first place. The state should wake up and admit that they cannot protect anyone, and they should take steps to facilitate the arming of those who need to be prepared. There is no good reason why any woman who is not a person prohibited (because of a criminal or mental health history) shouldn't be issued an emergency carry permit after completing a crash course in gun handling which I and others will gladly volunteer to instruct. I mean if a judge feels his or her life is in danger what does he or she do? Why he/she tools up and carries a firearm, often right under the robe and in court! And the state police will provide personal protection for any state official who may be at risk. (most Federal judges are already under 24 hr guard) But, when it comes to the safety of private citizens the state worshipers take the long view and tell us that the fewer guns in private hands the better for society! After all, someone could get hurt, right? I am by nature, nurture and predisposition a protector of the innocent. And, anyone who tells my women to leave the state and rely on the "kindness of strangers" like Blanche DuBois is going to have trouble with me! Given a choice between issuing carry permits to a distressed woman and/or male and female family members who then take turns guarding her or, telling her to leave the state, which do you think the cops, judges, prosecutors, counselors and social workers would choose? Incredibly they'd let our womenfolk be beaten, raped and/or murdered before ever admitting that firearms have a legitimate function and utility in our society. Well, the Hell with that and them! If women wish to protect themselves and their loved ones then they shouldn't wait for the state's blessing. The cops' real talent is drawing chalk lines around bodies, not protecting the innocent. If people rely on them or that piece of paper then they need to seriously question their conditioning by the state and and their media lackeys. State worshipers have their own reasons for fearing an armed citizenry and they don't care about us. So what if they sleep better if we're unarmed? They weren't drafted and they can always quit and join the rat race with the rest of us! If you think I'm kidding then consider that even in NYC the wives of politicians, police brass and even airhead celebrities like Joan Rivers or former cokeheads like Don Imus can get gun permits, and they travel in limos and are dropped off at the front door. But a poor slob like Bernhard Goetz couldn't get a permit and he was forced to ride the subways. Had Goetz been murdered that day it would not have been national news, because NYC has thousands of murders each year and it's just "life in the big city" But, when Goetz armed himself and plugged a few of the subway predators, it was international news as the manhunt for the "subway viligante" reached as fever pitch.

From my experience.. all restraining orders or the threat of them just manage to piss them off.. so.. not sure they do a bit of good actually.. other than aggrevating the situation.. but maybe in some cases they make a difference I dunno..
I'm sorry to hear you have had such experiences. Relying on the government for protection is never a good idea.
God is always good! yep, had that son of a b*tch known she had a 12 gauge next to her bed, he'd have never broken into the house and she'd be alive today. what a horrible way to die and i feel so sorry for the poor child to have been a witness to it.
Brutal. The poor child is scarred for life and absent a mom or dad.
One clever gun dealer I read about was asked which handgun was best for home defense, and replied "Oh, something about .72 caliber!" Circumstances permitting an informed, survival-conscious individual won't grab a handgun when a shotgun is available. (barring over-penetration concerns such as thin walls in apartments, etc. Like most folks I carry handguns away from the plantation because concealable shotguns are impractical and illegal. Fortunately, concealability is a compromise that I don't have to make at home. As the premiere combat vet Col. Jeff Cooper once said, "Use your handgun to fight your way to your rifle! (or for home defense your shotgun) I keep Ol' SLABSIDES (my Colt .45 Combat Commander) next to me and given a moment's notice of sinners approaching, I'll be ready to do The Lord's work with my trusty 26 yr old Remington 870 Police shotgun. I have an extended magazine and a Pachmayr pistol grip kit and lots of other accessories, but I don't use them. With its 18" barrel and Remington synthetic forearm and stock it handles very fast in close quarters. And, I don't have to worry about loading on Sunday and shooting all week because I'll never anyone say "Come fellas, let's rush the man with the shotgun! He can only get a few of us!" In too many instances Satan's little helpers have been shot repeatedly with handguns and still lived long enough to kill everyone in the home, jewelry store, bookie joint, etc. It would be damned poor consolation to me that the gremlin(s) will eventually die when the serum leaks out. I want to check any threat to me and mine, and I mean right now! A shotgun is the most devastating shoulder arm ever devised, and I have complete confidence in their ability to get the job done.
Thanks Ricky.. the weirdest thing ... I went to court to get an order based on what my lawyer told me to do.. because of threats etc.. the judge wouldnt give me an order!!? My lawyer was dumbfounded..
