Nash scores 42 to outshine Kidd Nash scores 42 to outshine Kidd's triple-double in Suns win Paul Coro The Arizona Republic Dec. 8, 2006 12:00 AM EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - As the Nets home crowd was informed that Jason Kidd had just tied Wilt Chamberlain for the third most triple-doubles in NBA history, only Steve Nash could get Kidd to do something he rarely does on the court - smile. Nash patted the back of fellow point guard and his former teammate/mentor's head and said, "You've only got 75 more than me." De-icing Kidd's game face is not the only thing Nash can do. Only Nash could steal his thunder - and a Suns win, their league-best eighth in a row - as he did here in Thursday's dramatic 161-157 Phoenix victory in double overtime over New Jersey. advertisement Kidd was unbelievable. Nash was unbeatable. Kidd had 38 points, 14 rebounds and 14 assists to lead the Nets to a franchise scoring record but dribbled off his foot on a potential game-tying possession at the end of the second overtime and missed a game-winner at the close of the first overtime. Nash posted a regular-season career high of 42 points, added 13 assists, hit a three-pointer to tie the game at the end of regulation and had nine of his points and three of his assists in the decisive sixth period. A game after dishing 20 assists, Nash used the flick of his wrist and the smooth, outstretched scoop of his hands to hit 16 of 25 shots in Phoenix's second highest-scoring game ever (173 vs. Denver in 1990 is the record). New Jersey, fueled by a scolding from team President Rod Thorn, ran its hearts out against Phoenix but stayed in step to make the Suns a tired team rolling into Boston for tonight's game. "I would've been sick if we would've lost," Nash said. "That's what it comes down to is just not wanting to lose. I don't care how many points or what happens in the storyline. Win or lose, that's all I was thinking about. "We had won or lost a number of times. It's mentally a great challenge to stay focused and on top." Even topping last year's Suns-Knicks triple-overtime thriller in New York, the teams combined for a tie for the fourth most points ever scored in a NBA game. The only scar left on the game was Nets coach Lawrence Frank's decision to leave in Vince Carter when he told his team to take a foul at the end of the fourth quarter. Carter, who was 13 of 17 from the field for 31 points, fouled out with 4.8 seconds to go. With 4.4 seconds to go in regulation and the Suns in a 133-130 hole, Nash used the best screener in the business, Kurt Thomas, to shake loose and dropped the tying shot off of one of 14 Boris Diaw assists. Nash was 6 of 7 from three-point range, as was Raja Bell before he fouled out in the first overtime. It was the league's highest scoring game in 16 years. "I just told our guys I think we can go home tonight and turn on classic NBA and it will be on already because that was the best game I have ever seen," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. " . . . Those two points guards have the will. They wouldn't let their teams lose."

Houston barely pulled that one out. Tonight Dallas could go down in flames. Spurs just about finished Denver's hopes last night.
Dallas isn't going to go down tonight it looks like as they're slaughtering Golden State now. But Dallas still must win the next 2 games or be eliminated. Dallas should still advance.

Phoenix Suns beat Los Angeles Lakers tonight 119-110 and thus closed out the first round against them. Also San Antonio Spurs beat Denver and also closed out their first round. Suns & Spurs will play each other in 2'nd round. Tomorrow night it is dallas against golden State and Houston against Utah.

I see that Houston lost a tough one tonight to Utah 94-82. The series is tied up at 3-3. Game 7 will be Saturday. And the Dallas game is starting now - Dallas must win tonight and again on Saturday in order to advance to round 2. If they lose either game - they're eliminated. Phoenix & San Antonio start game 1 of round 2 on Sunday at 12:30 Arizona time. Some people say that the Phoenix-San Antonio series will likely decide eventual NBA champion. Perhaps so, but I don't buy it. Round 2, 3 & 4 will all be super-tough for Phoenix to win. Last year Phoenix beat San Antonio in round 2 - and despite that Charles Barkley on TNT ridicules the idea that Phoenix could win again. Charles is a clown.

big upset tonight. Golden State beat Dallas 111-86. Nowitzi scored only 8 points. It was a horrible game for Dallas. Golden State will advance to 2'nd round, Dallas is eliminated. Amazing - Dallas won 67 games in regular season - a very excellent record - that happens maybe only once every 3-4 years that a team does that. and they were exited in the first round. I think the big winner besides Golden State is Steve Nash. Because talk was that Nowitzi would win the MVP award and Nash be runner-up. I don't see how Nowitzki can win it after this performance. If he was MVP material, then he was supposed to lead his team tonight - and his team self-destructed while he scored only 8 points. Whoever the Suns play from now on though will be a lot tougher than round 1 against the Lakers even though Kobe Bryant put in a great performance. I think Kobe Bryant's a better MVP candidate than Dirk Nowitzki.

I was wrong when I said above that Phoenix beat San Antonio in 2'nd round last year. Last year Dallas beat San Antonio in 2'nd round. Phoenix didn't play San Antonio in playoffs last year. It was year before last that Phoenix played San Antonio in 3'rd round and lost. San Antonio has won the championship 2 out of the last 4 years. In regular season Phoenix won 62 games and San Antonio 60. So San Antonio won 2 out of 3 games against Phoenix in regular season. But one of those games was at very beginning of the season when Phoenix lost 5 out of the first 6 games when Stoudemire wasn't playing well. and the other one was a very close game where Phoenix shot only 38% the lowest all season for them. The 3'rd game Phoenix won by a wide margin. We'll see how it goes, but lots of people are saying that this series will likely decide the eventual champion.

San Antonio won game 1 of 2'nd round in Phoenix today 111-106. The game was very competitive all throughout. Phoenix' biggest lead was 6. San Antonio's biggest lead was 8. The lead changed about 12 times in the last quarter. both teams played excellent. Tim duncan the big center from san Antonio especially, he had 34 points 16 rebounds. a key was I think that Duncan out-played Amare Stoudemire the Suns' big center. Stoudemire had 20 points & 18 rebounds, but Stoudemire kept missing shots close to the basket especially in 4'th quarter due to excellent defense of duncan. Stoudemire had a low shooting percentage. The Spurs' Tony Parker who is their point guard also played great getting 33 points. Steve Nash of the Suns got 31 points. But a big event in the game was that with 3 minutes left and the score very close Tony Parker ran into Steve Nash and gave Nash a big gash on his nose. For the rest of the game they must've put 8 different bandages on Nash's nose desperately trying to get him into the game. every time they put him in though he had blood all over his face the blood was dripping to the floor. they have a rule - you can't play if you're bleeding. that wound bled so profusely it was unbelievable. there was blood on his shirt and his shorts and no matter what they did it kept spewing out from under the bandage. So Nash didn't get to play hardly at all the last 3 minutes and when he did it was with blood all over his face. First blood is drawn. There's 6 more games in this series.

this is Steve Nash with one of the eight bandages they put on him the last 3 minutes of the game that took 15 minutes to play because about all that they did was focus the camera on Steve on the bench getting his face worked on while blood spewed out. This is Steve without the bandage. I'm sure hoping Nash won't be negatively effected by this. During the very brief time he played after the injury he did score 5 points so I can't imagine it'll hurt him for Tuesday night's game. But this is why they say that first blood has been struck in this battle. The Suns have lost home-court advantage. But the battle is on. I can't imagine a larger provocation from the Spurs. Suns better respond now. The San Antonio point guard Tony Parker who is going to marry that 'Desperate Housewives' actress looked right at Nash and butted his head into Nash's nose. and then Parker fell down and everyone thought he was injured, but it was really Nash who was injured. Everyone thinks it wasn't intentional, but I don't know.

Phoenix Suns won game 2 of round 2 101-81 last night over San Antonio Spurs. Coach Dantoni made some key changes from game 1 by starting a different big center Kurt Thomas and playing both centers Thomas & Stoudemire most of the game in order to counter the Spurs' Tim Duncan. It worked well because Thomas guarded Duncan and kept him in check while Stoudemire scored 27. Nash was extremely aggressive from the start, but he ended up scoring 20 with 16 assists - meaning he calmed down, didn't shoot so much and distributed the ball well which is his best skill. Suns' shot selection was excellent, they shot 53%. And the Spurs' Tony Parker who did so well on Sunday was held to only 13 points as coach Dantoni had Shawn Marion guard him instead of Nash. I'd say it is playoff basketball at its best. Before Sunday's game the Suns were odds on favorite in Las Vegas to win the NBA title. After Sunday's game the Spurs were the favorite in Vegas to win the NBA title. Suns showed tonight they can beat the Spurs and dominate them. Suns didn't even shoot hardly any 3's in the game. Wait until they catch fire at 3-point range. The intensity level was very high. My female friend talked to her brother after the game. He's in a forward operating base in suburban Baghdad, Iraq. He said all the soldiers in his unit watched it on tv and cheered loudly for the Suns. After what happened on Sunday this will be an extremely rewarding series to win.

Both Steve Nash & Amare Stoudemire of the Phoenix Suns were selected for the 1'st team. In Las Vegas they give better odds for San Antonio to win the title than the Suns. I think that a lot of Vegas bookies and other NBA experts have been slow to respect the Suns. I think the Suns have found some keys for defeating San Antonio. That is Kurt Thomas guarding Tim Duncan, Shawn Marion guarding Tony Parker and frequently using the 2 centers both Thomas & Stoudemire in the game at the same time. Suns next play Saturday night at 5 pm arizona time.

He says when he was up in air they bumped him in a manner meant to make him fall incorrectly & injure himself. Injuries can be induced in this manner. Stoudemire is the 7 footer who is very talented and quite a physical specimen. He's only 24 and it seems still improving. 2 years ago Stoudemire had the bad knee injury, then an operation and sat out an entire season. and he also gets angry easily, he's known to yell at referees & have technical fouls called against him. He says that he's still rehabilitating and expects to improve his abilities. Last year without Stoudemire the Suns went to Western Conference Finals. They think with him they should go all the way. I think what they did to Nash was on purpose in game 1, yet you don't hear a peep out of anyone accusing them of it. Nash it seems won't complain about something like that ever.

San Antonio Spurs beat the Phoenix Suns tonight 108-101. Both teams played very well, it was very competitive. Suns were up by 9 mid-way through 2'nd quarter, but San Antonio just plain won after that. A big difference was that San Antonio got a lot more free throw shots (36) compared to the Suns (27) and uncharacteristically the Suns shot only 67% from free throw line, and the Spurs shot 81%. That was the big difference. Stoudemire got into early foul trouble and only played 21 minutes as a result. Duncan was a great standout for the Spurs as he scored 33. Nash did not score the whole first half, but ended with 16. It is the best of 7 games so we'll see what happens now after Suns go down 2- 1. The next game is Monday night.

The Dallas Mavericks announced that their player Dirk Nowitzki would be named the NBA MVP for this season. The official announcement hasn't occurred yet, but the Mavericks office seems to be sure. Tonight's game is big. This 7-game series may go all 7 games and be an absolute war. Suns have been down before in playoffs series and come back to win. game starts at 6:30 Arizona time.

Suns won game 4 102-98. But that doesn't tell what happened at all. The Suns were down almost all of the 2'nd, 3'rd & 4'th quarters. They were down as much as 11 late in the 3'rd quarter. Towards the end of the game the Suns scored 8 straight points to take the lead with less than a minute left. Then the Spurs' Ginobili missed his shot with 25 seconds left and the Suns up by 3 thus making it almost certain the Suns would win at that point. And when Nash came flying down the court with the ball the Spurs' Robert Horry slammed him hard with an elbow sending Nash flying. Immediately the Suns' Raja bell attacked Horry and was then restrained. It looked most of the game that the Spurs would win, it was a low-scoring Spurs style of game. But the Suns rallied. Kurt Thomas of the Suns was very effective guarding duncan, duncan only had 21 points. the Suns' Stoudemire kicked ass, scoring 26. He was in foul trouble much of the game so they kept his minutes low. but when he came back in the game late in the 4'th he was unstoppable. Nash had 24 points and 15 assists, both above his average. Like I said it is a war now. 3 more games, 2 of them in Phoenix. The Suns made believers out of a lot of people tonight. Phoenix ended the game with a 16-3 run. But here's the drama now - when Horry hit Nash with the elbow at the end of the game and Bell attacked Horry - the Suns at the bench were all standing up and watching, immediately Stoudemire and Diaw stepped onto the court. Neither one of them ran to join the fray, but they stepped on the court. and that is against the rules. According to the rules they're supposed to be suspended for 1 game. And so Stoudemire may not be able to play in game 5. but even if that happens, the Suns can still win because it is a 7 game series.

The war will continue on Wednesday night when game 5 is played in Phoenix. Even if Stoudemire and Diaw can't play in game 5 the Suns will fight hard to win it. and if they lose they'll fight in game 6 & game 7 too. It is a war now like I said. In round 3 the Suns will play Utah who is a very tough team, but shouldn't be as tough as San Antonio. then in round 4 they'll play the eastern conference champions who it looks like will be Detroit. Detroit will be super-tough, but not as tough as San Antonio.

thanks for showing those 2 articles. It is quite something that people were saying the Suns were soft and whining and stuff. But if you look at the replay of how Nash got his big cut on his nose that caused 6 stitches, then I just don't see how it was an accident. Parker did it on purpose IMHO. and on some other plays, like when bowen kneed Nash in the groin, that was on purpose too. and Stoudemire is I think right to complain, those dirty plays could cost him his career if they cause injury. While the series is tied up 2-2 the Suns have scored 14 more points total than San Antonio. They say the Suns are soft on defense, but in the last several minutes of the game last night time after time after time the Spurs could not score as the Suns defense shut them down. And at the offensive end it was Nash & Stoudemire who were in fact unstoppable. It wasn't Duncan who was unstoppable, it was Stoudemire. As far as Stoudemire's foul trouble goes, that is partly a function of the referees, it has been noted that he's had calls against him that were mistakes. Here's a photo taken right after the big collision between Horry & Nash. Nash was flying down the court with the ball and Horry ran up to him with his elbow leading and flew it right into Nash's upper body sending him flying. That is what the Spurs did in frustration after it was decided that they'd lose the game. And then it was the Suns' Raja bell who challenged Horry to a fight and Horry who backed down. So I don't see how it is the Suns who are the soft team, I think it the other way around. It would be very unjust (& I think unlikely) if Stoudemire is not able to play in Wednesday's game because the Spurs initiated the physical conflict as they have all through this series and Stoudemire did nothing but step onto the court and watch with his eyes. Others were restraining Bell and Horry of course shrinked away from the fight. But even if the league does suspend Stoudemire & Diaw for stepping onto the court the Suns are still likely to win this series. because then they'll just go down 3-2 and have to win the last 2 games.

This series is rightfully getting a lot of attention as it seems to be the 2 best teams playing. Last night's victory was reminiscent of the Suns victory over dallas on march 1 when Nash scored 9 points in the last 55 seconds and the Suns won in double overtime even though they were down by a wide margin much of the game. The Suns have some compelling personalities. This Stoudemire guy is only 24. He is a work-in-progress, and has a track record for improving. What happens if in these last 3 games he is not in foul trouble and plays 35-40 minutes each game? because the Spurs cannot really stop Stoudemire.

And Horry of the Spurs must sit out both game 5 & game 6 without pay. They say that Stoudemire & Diaw 'left the vicinity of the bench' and for this they miss game 5. But they were already standing right at the perimeter line of the court and all they did was take one step forward and turn to look at Horry who initiated a fight. If they had stood behind the boundary line they wouldn't have had a good view as others were moving between them & Horry to block their view. They did not move towards the fight. So I don't think it was fair. They followed the letter of the rule, maybe next year they'll modify the rule. Suspending Stoudemire who is one of our team's stars is going to really hurt the Suns, but suspending Horry who normally sits the bench will not hurt the Spurs. Tomorrow night the Suns will try to win anyway. They simply won't have the inside presence, they'll miss the rebounding and the scoring of Stoudemire, they'll miss Diaw too. But they'll try to compensate with outside shooting. They are still capable of winning tomorrow night.

Chicago ended the season very strong. and Detroit has the best record in the eastern conference. I think whoever wins this Detroit-Chicago series will likely be in the NBA finals. Chicago had an unusually strong shooting percentage including 63% from 3-point range. Suns need to do that tomorrow night.

They now list the Suns as a 2-1 odds to win the NBA championship - meaning Suns are favored over all other teams. San Antonio has 5-2 odds. And this is AFTER the Stoudemire announcement. So even the bookies think it likely the Suns will win those last 2 games. and the bookies of Vegas have notoriously disrespected the Suns this season. One time in the regular season the bookies favored the LA Lakers to win against Phoenix on a game to be played in Phoenix, despite Phoenix having such a good record. That's disrespect. Remember the knock against the Suns was once earlier this year that they could not beat top western conference teams.

What I've learned is that massive sympathy among fans all over the world has shifted to the Suns after Monday's game & Tuesday's suspension of Stoudemire. it seems now EVERYONE is rooting for the Suns and even the basketball experts are on the Suns' side now. If you look at the link in 109 you get to a San Antonio newspaper's sports page. and on that link is a sports columnist who bad-mouths the Spurs and says the suspension was unjust. and there is also a link there to a comment blog for local fans. And even the San Antonio fans are sympathetic to the Suns. They're saying that the Spurs are a dirty team unable to win any other way and that the suspension of Stoudemire was wrong. Look for the Suns to show off their offensive capabilities, their outside shooting and their fast-breaks. and look for Phoenix fans to make it very uncomfortable for Spurs players.

thanks for that link. Here's something interesting. I have sent many emails to my female friend's soldier brother who is in a Forward Operating Base outside of Baghdad and does patrols regularly. He is a huge Suns fan along with his buddies. They say they have to get back from patrol in 1 piece without interruption to watch Suns on tv. and so I send him emails with links to articles & comments about the Suns. I never talk politics with him. as he doesn't need a distraction. and all my emails bounce back. My female friend doesn't have that problem, she emails him and it goes through. But from me it doesn't. I think myself that I'm just identified as a person not allowed to email the soldiers. based on my blogging here I think. Funny thing is - I would never talk politics with those guys and I never have sent an email concerning politics.

The san Antonio Spurs won tonight's game 88-85. The Suns did lead most of the game and impressively too. The Suns were up by 11 at halftime and led by as many as 7 with just 5 minutes left. Suns really had every opportunity to win the game, but just missed too many shots. The Spurs defense was likely a factor in that, but the shooting percentage of the Suns was too low to win. The Suns did out-rebound the Spurs by 3 rebounds. The Spurs took 11 more free throw attempts than the Suns though and that was a big advantage to them. The Suns made 16 of 17 free throw attempts, but the Spurs made 22 of the 28 attempts they had. The Phoenix crowd was very loud. Somehow the Suns got off to a fantastic start. Shawn Marion was on fire early in the game, he scored 20 in the first half, but only 4 the rest of the game. Early on both the Spurs' Tony parker and Tim Duncan picked up fouls and their coach had them sitting the bench. The Suns were up by as many as 16 points early in the game. but the Spurs eventually started playing normal and just plain won. The Spurs do have the best defense in the league and shut those Suns shooters down. So without stoudemire and diaw they were missing 25% of their normal rotation. So James Jones and Pat Burke (who is from Ireland) got to play some minutes when they normally don't. big game tonight at 6:30 arizona time. The Vegas bookies have the Spurs favored to win by 3 points. They also knocked the odds down for PHoenix to win it all to 6-1 while the Spurs are even odds, the Detroit Pistons are 9-2 and Utah is 5-1. That means before Wednesday's loss the Suns had the best odds to win the title of all teams in the league, and now they have the 4'th best odds. Tonight's game concludes the Phoenix Suns season. Because San Antonio Spurs won the game 114-106. It will the San Antonio playing Utah in the western conference finals. and Detroit playing Cleveland in the eastern conference finals. Stoudemire had 38 points & 12 rebounds. Nash had 18 points & 14 assists. But Nash scored only 3 points the first half. he scored most of his points in the 4'th quarter. Nash was constantly trying to get others to score, then early in the 4'th quarter with our team down by 18 he began to try to score on every possession and we came close. Nash was not treated kindly by the officials tonight. He had only 2 attempts at free throws, yet many times he was man- handled. Kurt Thomas the other big Suns center besides Stoudemire seemed flustered, his normal scoring touch wasn't so good. They limited his minutes. I bet there'll be minor adjustments made by the Suns in the summer. We'll just have to wait until next year.

The San Antonio defense disrupted the Phoenix outside shooting. In the regular season Phoenix was the #1 3-point shooting team. But San Antonio had more 3- point shots than Phoenix in this series. Nash was really covered very tightly last night. and the amazing thing is the referee would almost never send Nash to the free-throw line and that is questionable. Nash scored 3 points until the 4'th quarter where he scored 15 points in 6 for 6 shooting. In the 3'rd quarter they succeeded in shutting Nash down so he didn't even pass to anyone. The San Antonio players would come out and start guarding past the 3-point line and start fouling right there too, and there were no calls. That's what it seemed like to me. San Antonio went on that 14-2 run in the end of the 3'rd quarter and that was decisive. The Spurs were up by 18 early in the 4'th. Nash finally started to try to shoot every possession, he scored 15 in 4'th quarter. Stoudemire was unstoppable with 38 points. Stoudemire also scored 15 in the 4'th quarter. There's talk about trading Shawn Marion plus a draft pick to get a star. I think Marion is a star. I think they should try to improve with the players they have rather than trade trade trade which introduces risk. The whole thing does give a bad taste to the Phoenix Suns fans because of what happened in game 1 with the head-butt by Parker on Nash that knocked him out of the game and caused 6 stitches, the game 5 situation where Stoudemire couldn't play, and game 6 where it seemed the Phoenix Suns didn't get the fouls called they should have.
