Nash scores 42 to outshine Kidd Nash scores 42 to outshine Kidd's triple-double in Suns win Paul Coro The Arizona Republic Dec. 8, 2006 12:00 AM EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - As the Nets home crowd was informed that Jason Kidd had just tied Wilt Chamberlain for the third most triple-doubles in NBA history, only Steve Nash could get Kidd to do something he rarely does on the court - smile. Nash patted the back of fellow point guard and his former teammate/mentor's head and said, "You've only got 75 more than me." De-icing Kidd's game face is not the only thing Nash can do. Only Nash could steal his thunder - and a Suns win, their league-best eighth in a row - as he did here in Thursday's dramatic 161-157 Phoenix victory in double overtime over New Jersey. advertisement Kidd was unbelievable. Nash was unbeatable. Kidd had 38 points, 14 rebounds and 14 assists to lead the Nets to a franchise scoring record but dribbled off his foot on a potential game-tying possession at the end of the second overtime and missed a game-winner at the close of the first overtime. Nash posted a regular-season career high of 42 points, added 13 assists, hit a three-pointer to tie the game at the end of regulation and had nine of his points and three of his assists in the decisive sixth period. A game after dishing 20 assists, Nash used the flick of his wrist and the smooth, outstretched scoop of his hands to hit 16 of 25 shots in Phoenix's second highest-scoring game ever (173 vs. Denver in 1990 is the record). New Jersey, fueled by a scolding from team President Rod Thorn, ran its hearts out against Phoenix but stayed in step to make the Suns a tired team rolling into Boston for tonight's game. "I would've been sick if we would've lost," Nash said. "That's what it comes down to is just not wanting to lose. I don't care how many points or what happens in the storyline. Win or lose, that's all I was thinking about. "We had won or lost a number of times. It's mentally a great challenge to stay focused and on top." Even topping last year's Suns-Knicks triple-overtime thriller in New York, the teams combined for a tie for the fourth most points ever scored in a NBA game. The only scar left on the game was Nets coach Lawrence Frank's decision to leave in Vince Carter when he told his team to take a foul at the end of the fourth quarter. Carter, who was 13 of 17 from the field for 31 points, fouled out with 4.8 seconds to go. With 4.4 seconds to go in regulation and the Suns in a 133-130 hole, Nash used the best screener in the business, Kurt Thomas, to shake loose and dropped the tying shot off of one of 14 Boris Diaw assists. Nash was 6 of 7 from three-point range, as was Raja Bell before he fouled out in the first overtime. It was the league's highest scoring game in 16 years. "I just told our guys I think we can go home tonight and turn on classic NBA and it will be on already because that was the best game I have ever seen," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. " . . . Those two points guards have the will. They wouldn't let their teams lose."

The war will continue on Wednesday night when game 5 is played in Phoenix. Even if Stoudemire and Diaw can't play in game 5 the Suns will fight hard to win it. and if they lose they'll fight in game 6 & game 7 too. It is a war now like I said. In round 3 the Suns will play Utah who is a very tough team, but shouldn't be as tough as San Antonio. then in round 4 they'll play the eastern conference champions who it looks like will be Detroit. Detroit will be super-tough, but not as tough as San Antonio.

thanks for showing those 2 articles. It is quite something that people were saying the Suns were soft and whining and stuff. But if you look at the replay of how Nash got his big cut on his nose that caused 6 stitches, then I just don't see how it was an accident. Parker did it on purpose IMHO. and on some other plays, like when bowen kneed Nash in the groin, that was on purpose too. and Stoudemire is I think right to complain, those dirty plays could cost him his career if they cause injury. While the series is tied up 2-2 the Suns have scored 14 more points total than San Antonio. They say the Suns are soft on defense, but in the last several minutes of the game last night time after time after time the Spurs could not score as the Suns defense shut them down. And at the offensive end it was Nash & Stoudemire who were in fact unstoppable. It wasn't Duncan who was unstoppable, it was Stoudemire. As far as Stoudemire's foul trouble goes, that is partly a function of the referees, it has been noted that he's had calls against him that were mistakes. Here's a photo taken right after the big collision between Horry & Nash. Nash was flying down the court with the ball and Horry ran up to him with his elbow leading and flew it right into Nash's upper body sending him flying. That is what the Spurs did in frustration after it was decided that they'd lose the game. And then it was the Suns' Raja bell who challenged Horry to a fight and Horry who backed down. So I don't see how it is the Suns who are the soft team, I think it the other way around. It would be very unjust (& I think unlikely) if Stoudemire is not able to play in Wednesday's game because the Spurs initiated the physical conflict as they have all through this series and Stoudemire did nothing but step onto the court and watch with his eyes. Others were restraining Bell and Horry of course shrinked away from the fight. But even if the league does suspend Stoudemire & Diaw for stepping onto the court the Suns are still likely to win this series. because then they'll just go down 3-2 and have to win the last 2 games.

This series is rightfully getting a lot of attention as it seems to be the 2 best teams playing. Last night's victory was reminiscent of the Suns victory over dallas on march 1 when Nash scored 9 points in the last 55 seconds and the Suns won in double overtime even though they were down by a wide margin much of the game. The Suns have some compelling personalities. This Stoudemire guy is only 24. He is a work-in-progress, and has a track record for improving. What happens if in these last 3 games he is not in foul trouble and plays 35-40 minutes each game? because the Spurs cannot really stop Stoudemire.

And Horry of the Spurs must sit out both game 5 & game 6 without pay. They say that Stoudemire & Diaw 'left the vicinity of the bench' and for this they miss game 5. But they were already standing right at the perimeter line of the court and all they did was take one step forward and turn to look at Horry who initiated a fight. If they had stood behind the boundary line they wouldn't have had a good view as others were moving between them & Horry to block their view. They did not move towards the fight. So I don't think it was fair. They followed the letter of the rule, maybe next year they'll modify the rule. Suspending Stoudemire who is one of our team's stars is going to really hurt the Suns, but suspending Horry who normally sits the bench will not hurt the Spurs. Tomorrow night the Suns will try to win anyway. They simply won't have the inside presence, they'll miss the rebounding and the scoring of Stoudemire, they'll miss Diaw too. But they'll try to compensate with outside shooting. They are still capable of winning tomorrow night.

Chicago ended the season very strong. and Detroit has the best record in the eastern conference. I think whoever wins this Detroit-Chicago series will likely be in the NBA finals. Chicago had an unusually strong shooting percentage including 63% from 3-point range. Suns need to do that tomorrow night.

They now list the Suns as a 2-1 odds to win the NBA championship - meaning Suns are favored over all other teams. San Antonio has 5-2 odds. And this is AFTER the Stoudemire announcement. So even the bookies think it likely the Suns will win those last 2 games. and the bookies of Vegas have notoriously disrespected the Suns this season. One time in the regular season the bookies favored the LA Lakers to win against Phoenix on a game to be played in Phoenix, despite Phoenix having such a good record. That's disrespect. Remember the knock against the Suns was once earlier this year that they could not beat top western conference teams.

I decided to check out the San Antonio newspaper to see what they were saying. and what I found is amazing.

What I've learned is that massive sympathy among fans all over the world has shifted to the Suns after Monday's game & Tuesday's suspension of Stoudemire. it seems now EVERYONE is rooting for the Suns and even the basketball experts are on the Suns' side now. If you look at the link in 109 you get to a San Antonio newspaper's sports page. and on that link is a sports columnist who bad-mouths the Spurs and says the suspension was unjust. and there is also a link there to a comment blog for local fans. And even the San Antonio fans are sympathetic to the Suns. They're saying that the Spurs are a dirty team unable to win any other way and that the suspension of Stoudemire was wrong. Look for the Suns to show off their offensive capabilities, their outside shooting and their fast-breaks. and look for Phoenix fans to make it very uncomfortable for Spurs players.

thanks for that link. Here's something interesting. I have sent many emails to my female friend's soldier brother who is in a Forward Operating Base outside of Baghdad and does patrols regularly. He is a huge Suns fan along with his buddies. They say they have to get back from patrol in 1 piece without interruption to watch Suns on tv. and so I send him emails with links to articles & comments about the Suns. I never talk politics with him. as he doesn't need a distraction. and all my emails bounce back. My female friend doesn't have that problem, she emails him and it goes through. But from me it doesn't. I think myself that I'm just identified as a person not allowed to email the soldiers. based on my blogging here I think. The san Antonio Spurs won tonight's game 88-85. The Suns did lead most of the game and impressively too. The Suns were up by 11 at halftime and led by as many as 7 with just 5 minutes left. But the Spurs just kept coming back and won in the last minute of the game. here is the box score. http://www.nba.com /games/20070516/SASPHX/boxscore.html The Spurs lead the series now 3-2. The next game is Friday night in San Antonio. The Suns cannot afford to lose any more.

Suns really had every opportunity to win the game, but just missed too many shots. The Spurs defense was likely a factor in that, but the shooting percentage of the Suns was too low to win. The Suns did out-rebound the Spurs by 3 rebounds. The Spurs took 11 more free throw attempts than the Suns though and that was a big advantage to them. The Suns made 16 of 17 free throw attempts, but the Spurs made 22 of the 28 attempts they had. The Phoenix crowd was very loud. Somehow the Suns got off to a fantastic start. Shawn Marion was on fire early in the game, he scored 20 in the first half, but only 4 the rest of the game. Early on both the Spurs' Tony parker and Tim Duncan picked up fouls and their coach had them sitting the bench. The Suns were up by as many as 16 points early in the game. but the Spurs eventually started playing normal and just plain won. The Spurs do have the best defense in the league and shut those Suns shooters down. So without stoudemire and diaw they were missing 25% of their normal rotation. So James Jones and Pat Burke (who is from Ireland) got to play some minutes when they normally don't. big game tonight at 6:30 arizona time. The Vegas bookies have the Spurs favored to win by 3 points. They also knocked the odds down for PHoenix to win it all to 6-1 while the Spurs are even odds, the Detroit Pistons are 9-2 and Utah is 5-1. That means before Wednesday's loss the Suns had the best odds to win the title of all teams in the league, and now they have the 4'th best odds. Tonight's game concludes the Phoenix Suns season. Because San Antonio Spurs won the game 114-106. It will the San Antonio playing Utah in the western conference finals. and Detroit playing Cleveland in the eastern conference finals. Stoudemire had 38 points & 12 rebounds. Nash had 18 points & 14 assists. But Nash scored only 3 points the first half. he scored most of his points in the 4'th quarter. Nash was constantly trying to get others to score, then early in the 4'th quarter with our team down by 18 he began to try to score on every possession and we came close. Nash was not treated kindly by the officials tonight. He had only 2 attempts at free throws, yet many times he was man- handled. Kurt Thomas the other big Suns center besides Stoudemire seemed flustered, his normal scoring touch wasn't so good. They limited his minutes. I bet there'll be minor adjustments made by the Suns in the summer. We'll just have to wait until next year.

The San Antonio defense disrupted the Phoenix outside shooting. In the regular season Phoenix was the #1 3-point shooting team. But San Antonio had more 3- point shots than Phoenix in this series. Nash was really covered very tightly last night. and the amazing thing is the referee would almost never send Nash to the free-throw line and that is questionable. Nash scored 3 points until the 4'th quarter where he scored 15 points in 6 for 6 shooting. In the 3'rd quarter they succeeded in shutting Nash down so he didn't even pass to anyone. The San Antonio players would come out and start guarding past the 3-point line and start fouling right there too, and there were no calls. That's what it seemed like to me. San Antonio went on that 14-2 run in the end of the 3'rd quarter and that was decisive. The Spurs were up by 18 early in the 4'th. Nash finally started to try to shoot every possession, he scored 15 in 4'th quarter. Stoudemire was unstoppable with 38 points. Stoudemire also scored 15 in the 4'th quarter. Evidently they're committing to not trading any of the top players, but they already put Diaw & James Johnson out for a trade. Allegedly the Suns will get one of the wild card picks if Atlanta's pick doesn't end up in the top 3. They give it out by chance for the teams that lose most. and then they'll get other lesser picks out of the draft as well. San Antonio's intense swarming style of pre-emptive defense is different in playoffs than what is done in regular season it seems. and San Antonio has a way of not getting called for fouls while they play this intense defense. and they fluster the other team's players with it. Today Utah lost to San Antonio by 8 points. It was the same type of thing, Utah shot poorly with the harassing defense, and then Utah didn't go to the foul line nearly as much as San Antonio. Meanwhile san antonio's shooting percentage was very high. Utah beat them in rebounding. So this 1'st game against Utah is similar pattern to the Phoenix series' typical games. Utah will adjust and win at least 1 or maybe 2.

The other thing I found interesting is that in Game 1 between Utah & San Antonio when the San Antonio coach put Robert Horry into the game the crowd gave him a huge standing ovation.
that crowd knows that when Horry fouled Nash hard that was a key play in their victory because of the Stoudemire suspension. IMHO the head-but of Nash by Parker in game 1 and the Horry slam into Nash in game 4 were the key plays of the whole series. With those 2 dirty plays San Antonio won 2 games.

San Antonio just won game 2 against Utah very easily, 105-96. It was pretty much a repeat of game 1. The Spurs were up by 17 at half and 21 early in the 3'rd quarter. For some reason the Spurs have had an unusually high shooting percentage in both games. and in both games they had large leads after the 2'nd quarter. utah is not doing nearly as well against San Antonio as Phoenix did. I think the Spurs will skate into the NBA finals. The Suns didn't get anything out of the draft lottery from that trade. They did the trade a long time ago, I thought it was done recently. They didn't trade Diaw to Atlanta like I thought, they acquired Diaw from Atlanta in the trade from 2 years ago. and they were due from that trade to get Atlanta's draft pick if it was not in the top 3. But Atlanta drew #3 - so no high draft pick for the Suns this summer. Instead they get Atlanta's pick next year no matter what it is. So I think the Suns' only picks in the draft are at #28 & #29. Detroit is up 1-0 against Cleveland in the eastern conference finals. They play game 2 on Thursday. I think Detroit will likely give San Antonio a nice challenge.

you may be aware that San Antonio is now up 3-1 against Utah. and the Detroit- Cleveland series is tied 2-2. it's likely to end up just as I thought with San Antonio winning the title and Phoenix being their most difficult opponent in round 2.

you'd think so, but the way it has worked is that people lost respect for the Suns (like I care!). Conventional wisdom among the NBA experts was that an offense oriented team couldn't win it all, so they're reinforced in that when they see Suns lose. Now they're all even more emboldened in thinking Suns style just can't win in playoffs. But the Suns were the team that challenged San Antonio much more than any other so far. and San Antonio did profit from dirty plays. Tonight San Antonio is up 27 points over the Utah Jazz at end of 3'rd quarter, so I think san Antonio will have several days to rest before the NBA finals. I still have hopes that detroit will challenge them. I don't like San Antonio after the dirty plays etc. I'd rather see them lose - who knows - maybe detroit could do it. But Utah is not going to - they'll go down 4-1 tonight. Though the Suns went down 4-2 they still challenged the Spurs much more strongly, they actually had more total points than the Spurs. Same as back in 1993 when the Suns challenged the Bulls in the finals, the bulls players said that the Suns were their toughest competition in the time they won the 6 championships. Next Year!!!

You likely know that Cleveland has taken a 3-2 lead over Detroit in the Eastern Conference finals. and tonight is game 6 for them. If Cleveland wins they advance. On Thursday night Cleveland's LeBron James put out an incredible performance. He scored 48 points. But with a few minutes left in the 4'th quarter he began to score all of Cleveland's points. The game had 2 overtime periods. He scored all of Cleveland's points in the 2 overtimes and in the last few minutes of the 4'th quarter, that was 25 consequtive points.

Cleveland did win tonight in game 6 and won the eastern conference finals 4-2 over Detroit. detroit had been #1 seed and cleveland #2 seed in the east. cleveland had gone down 2-0 and then won the last 4 games. This sets up the NBA finals between San Antonio and Cleveland.

The Spurs are winning game 2 now easily. they were up by 25 at half. now at 2 minutes into the 4'th quarter they're up by 19. This is the easiest San Antonio has had it the entire playoffs so far at least. Hopefully Cleveland will win at least 1 game sometime.

and in game 3 last night the Spurs won again 75-72. They're up 3-0 now and only need 1 more victory to win it all. But this game was different from the first 2. Cleveland was very close the whole way and the game wasn't decided until the last 5 seconds. San Antonio shot very excellent from 3-point range and that's what won the game. I hope Cleveland wins on Thursday, but I think it'll be over soon.

San Antonio won game 4 last night 83-82. Cleveland had the lead earlyin the game & in 1'st quarter. But it was very close after that. So San Antonio has won the NBA championship. They won round 1 against Houston 4-1. They won round 2 against Phoenix 4-2. They won round 3 against Utah 4- 1. They won round 4 against Cleveland 4-0. the basketball experts were right that round 2 was the key series.

Robin, I just wanted to give you some Suns news. http ://www.azcentral.com/sports/columns/articles/0722p2main0723.html This NBA referee who resigned a few days ago due to the fact that it was discovered that he bet a lot on games that he himself officiated in apparently was an official in some of the games between the Suns & San Antonio in the playoffs. and people are suspecting that gambling may have influenced the officiating. In other news a few days ago the Suns traded the big center Kurt Thomas to Seattle. Suns fans are disappointed because Thomas is the guy who was used to play defense against the San Antonio Spurs' Tim Duncan. Thomas was said to be the guy who was there to contain Duncan in the playoffs. The Suns basically got nothing in the trade in return, a 2'nd round draft pick in 2009 is what they got, in other words - nothing. It was done for financial reasons, Thomas got paid a lot of money and the Suns wanted to unload his salary. Some say the Suns will use the money to sign a new player, but we can't imagine what is going to happen to replace Thomas. In other news the Suns signed a free agent Grant Hill. Hill was once an elite player in the league. He's 35 now and has had injury problems the last few years. He'll be used as a backup to Steve Nash. Everyone was very happy about Hill coming to the team and he's playing for a very low salary, about 1.5 million a year.

He's apparently being prosecuted, for what exactly I don't quite understand. But on the sports-talk radio show they say he may rat out a lot of other people. His house is being guarded by the police. He's had death threats. The sports-talk guys say he's involved with the mob. I have no idea. The NBA commissioner gave his press conference today and says it is an isolated incident. The sports talk guys say there's more referees involved. But this guy did officiate in games between San Antonio & Phoenix in May and he was under investigation by the FBI at that time when he did that even. and the officiating in those games was very controversial. There were times when Steve Nash was getting fouled a lot and there were no calls. There were times when Amare Stoudemire couldn't play because they constantly called fouls on him though he didn't commit the foul. It's normal for the officiating to be controversial in the playoffs especially. what happened to Phoenix was not unusual. I wouldn't be surprised if they've been cheating for the sake of gambling profits for decades. and I wouldn't be surprised if David Stern's in on it.
