COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A pastor who worked with young adults at New Life Church has admitted sexual misconduct and resigned just weeks after former church leader Ted Haggard stepped down over sexual immorality.

Christopher Beard, who headed the “twentyfourseven” ministry that taught leadership skills to young adults, resigned Friday, said Rob Brendle, an associate pastor at the 14,000-member church.

Brendle said Beard told church officials about “a series of decisions displaying poor judgment, including one incident of sexual misconduct several years ago.”

The church said in a statement that the misconduct was with another unmarried adult several years ago. Beard, who worked at the church for nine years, has since married.

Brendle would not elaborate about the nature of the misconduct but said it did not involve Haggard, who acknowledged he paid a man for a massage and for methamphetamine but said he did not have sex with the man and did not use the drug.

Beard’s resignation was first reported Monday by The Denver Post and The Gazette in Colorado Springs. The church said it wouldn’t comment further. A residential phone number listed in Beard’s name was disconnected.

The church’s outside Board of Overseers was asked to examine the “spiritual character” of its 200 staff members after Haggard resigned last month from the church and as president of the National Association of Evangelicals.

“We recognize there will be increased scrutiny of our church in the wake of the scandal,” Brendle said.

He said Beard discussed his “misconduct” during a meeting with the Board of Overseers, made up of four pastors from other congregations.

Beard was reprimanded by the church in 2002, when police broke up a twentyfourseven training exercise he led in a church parking lot involving fake assault rifles.

Haggard and his wife, Gayle Haggard, are undergoing three weeks of counseling at an undisclosed center in Arizona.

A pastor who worked with young adults at New Life Church has admitted sexual misconduct ...

As the Bible says: Thou shalt not put thy rod in thy staff.

It's not queer when Republicans do it.

I don't know if I am cut out to be a Christian. I'm not queer and I find no sexual thrill in sending other people to die for the glory of George W. Bush. Maybe I will become a Wiccan or a Bhuddist.

I decided to become 'nothing' yet believe in the Creator.

We all know right from wrong and if one lives accordingly, my God should have no problem with me for not joining a cult or believing in words written by men.

Wiccan may not be the best choice for you, then. Many of us are...versatile.

Huh? What the fuck is wrong with these people?

Versatile is a nice word for it. Indicating that gayness is accepted, but not really required. Much more healthy than a bunch of fundie Christians "rapturing" each other in the mens toilet.

It's called Assault Rifles and Buggery for Jesus. And it's a perfectly normal thing for fundamentalist christians - especially in Colorado Springs.

Maybe it's me, maybe my New England reserved and restrained religious upbrining gave me a sensibility that automatically sees this sort of "Christianity" as a disgusting perversion right off the bat.

I wasn't raised in Churches that had "reverends" with gaudy gold watches and huge gold rings. They didn't wear 5000 dollar suits with 800 dollar ties. Every church I attened was . . . well . . . a church- 4 walls- a vaulted ceiling of some sort- modest restrained- not a circular arena with a giant stage in the center with a huge American flag drapped overhead and a full rock and roll band with horn section in an orchestra pit. No big screen TeeVees showing fighter jets racing around in the sky. Our priests didn't break a sweat when giving a homily (which lasted 20 minutes at most- not two hours). They didn't run around on stage with a wireless microphone either.

Call me a cold New England cod when it comes to religion- but this sort of "Christianity" so reeks of heresy, of schlock, of scam, of chicanery, that I have a hard time understaning how ANYONE could be taken in by it. Is there something wrong with these people fundamentally that attracts them to churches in which you end up in the parking lot doing exercies with fake machine guns? I don't get it. I simply fail to understand what sort of loser is attracted by these cheap dime store conmen and degenerates? I mean- isn't it easy to see?

Leave us not forget the speaking in tongues, the schlock healing, the hysteria and the hand antennas.

Oh yea, the snakes too. Don't leave out the snake handling.

Makes a Wiccan drawing down the moon ceremony seem very dignified and rational.

I used to avoid churches because I used to think that I'd either get hit by lightning, or my powers would be greatly diminished.

I avoid them now because I know someday God is coming back here and going to burn every single one of them down, with the people in them.

Every church, mosque and synagogue someday will be laid to waste, because of what goes on inside these so called "Houses Of God".

When that day comes, I'm going to be happily playing Nintendo at home.

This country's priorities are all fucked up.

me-thinks that without our people being dumbed down by many factors, then it would likely be that few would fall for this stuff instead of many. humpty-dumpty; our country has fallen badly. it took a lot of hard work by the evil ones to under-mine us. but they did it.

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high [places].

Probably the same people who like Ted Haggart's church.
