I'd argue that the ONLY truly GREAT POTUS in our history was Andrew Jackson!!! (His lead needs to be followed again, and ALL banks abolished) And, JFK might have been able to make that distinction IF the CIA hadn't offed him...

Father Abe is big among reichwingers now. The ruling ethic of reichwingers like Limbaugh who has been slobbering over Lincoln as of late is that if ol' Abe did it then it must be ok. As in- if Abe imprissoned newspaper reporters and congressmen whom he didn't like- that is ok. As in if Abe shut down press he didn't like- that is ok. As in if The Great Emancipator used the military as his personal praetorian guard that is ok.

Reichwinger morality seems to be, that if some other President did it once or something was done in the past by the US military and they like the results- then it is therefore moral and not wrong. IE- since Lincoln "won" all his tactics and actions were therefore moral. Since the US Army airforce murdered a couple million civilians in WWII in targeting them for bombing with conventional and nuke weapons- that was also ok- as "we won" that as well.

I presume that if Lincoln had rounded up a third of the Southern population and had them gassed- then Rush Limbaugh would now be calling for the same against "Liberals" since Great Father Abe did it.
