Let the swiftboating begin. Remembering 9/11 is never easy. Kristen Breitweiser's book will make it even harder. It comes out in two weeks, so this is just a heads up post. The swiftboating is about to begin. The wingnuts will go on attack. It will be deadly. It will get ugly. Ms. Breitweiser will be on Larry King on September 8th, followed by Chris Matthews "Hardball" on 9/11/06, the fifth anniversary of the tragedy. A poster at DU got a copy of Breitweiser's book early and posted on it, which includes a letter to Ann Coulter. The "Jersey Widows" did a response earlier, which I outlined in my last Coulter piece. And she had time to get in the book at the very end a very classy 5 1/2 page letter to the vixen Ann Coulter. Here's the last 4 paragraphs. ... Ann, I don't want to get in a debate with you. It's not because I am afraid of your or your nasty bullying tactics. I'm not going to debate you because we have many, many more important issues to deal with in our country right now. But I will leave you with this: We live in America, the world's oldest democracy. Democracy can prevail (is that what you and your friends really fear?), but that requires hard work, as President Bush might say. Every citizen in this country is entitled to his or her beliefs, and every citizen is entitled to participate. We still have the right to speak our minds to effect change (within the parameters of the law, of course). So don't try to silence the voices of victims or anyone else, merely because you disagree with them or feel threatened by their political choices. In my opinion, your method of using intimidation and insults to "win" a debate is truly unpatriotic. Actually, I expect that you will continue to scream and shout and smear as nastily as you want, so long as you think that that kind of behavior sells books. But we have tackled bigger bullies than you and lived through far worst circumstances than your book tour. We're not intimidated by you. We're not running away. And under no circumstances will we be silenced by your "godless" rantings and ravings. Keep your eyes open for the swiftboating of Kristen Breitweiser. From what I've heard of the book, she goes after Bush hard. This targets him on his fighting terrorism turf, doing so right before a tough midterm election. The wingnuts won't take this charge lightly. UPDATE (12:25 p.m.): "9/11: Press for Truth"... Also see this Vanity Fair article, which unmasks the Pentagon's misinformation campaign on 9/11. Here's the money quote for me... In his bunker under the White House, Vice President Cheney was not notified about United 93 until 10:02—only one minute before the airliner impacted the ground. Yet it was with dark bravado that the vice president and others in the Bush administration would later recount sober deliberations about the prospect of shooting down United 93. "Very, very tough decision, and the president understood the magnitude of that decision," Bush's then chief of staff, Andrew Card, told ABC News. Cheney echoed, "The significance of saying to a pilot that you are authorized to shoot down a plane full of Americans is, a, you know, it's an order that had never been given before." And it wasn't on 9/11, either. President Bush would finally grant commanders the authority to give that order at 10:18, which—though no one knew it at the time—was 15 minutes after the attack was over. But comments such as those above were repeated by other administration and military figures in the weeks and months following 9/11, forging the notion that only the passengers' counterattack against their hijackers prevented an inevitable shootdown of United 93 (and convincing conspiracy theorists that the government did, indeed, secretly shoot it down). The recordings tell a different story, and not only because United 93 had crashed before anyone in the military chain of command even knew it had been hijacked. ...

Not only can they not keep their lies straight, it turns out for all their tough talk, they're really all a bunch of impotent bullies. [And who I also believe had foreknowledge and assisted in the attack, which is something only a cowardly traitor would pull.
