Chavez promises a socialist Venezuela as he starts new 6-year term

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — President Hugo Chavez echoed Fidel Castro's cry of "socialism or death" as he was sworn in for a new six-year term on Wednesday, promising to accelerate Venezuela's transformation into a socialist state.

Chavez took the oath of office at the National Assembly after a sweeping re-election victory that has given him free reign to pursue more radical changes, including plans to nationalize power and telecommunications companies.

His right hand raised, Chavez declared: "Fatherland, socialism or death — I swear it," invoking the Cuban leader's famous call to arms.

Chavez also alluded to Jesus, saying: "I swear by Christ — the greatest socialist in history."

This is what comes from straying from the true faith, and being an uneducated moron in generally, JT. YOu fall for shysters like this Chavez.

Jesus was a distributionist. Not a socialist.

No, Marx was a distributionist. Jesus is an amalgamation.

Jesus has become a "Rorschach test." His Name is used and His philosophy reinterpreted to fit the image of whatever political movement which is seeking to appropriate His image to get votes.

It is interesting that Christ disavowed all political movements while on earth. But that's not what the politicos who use Christianity wish to hear.

I couldn't agree more. A recent debate here finally broke down with two Christians claiming the other was doomed to hell for their biblical interpretation. That spoke volumes to me.

I grew up in The Bible Belt and heard that argument many times.

In fact each individual church would claim that the folks in a different church down the lane weren't right with The Lord, and they too were going to go to Hayull.

And the Pentocostal Holiness weren't sure which of the others were washed in the blood, but they were sure about themselves because they handled venomous snakes and drank strychnine.

I always thought that Jeebus would tell the lot of them to pull their heads out of their asses, learn humility and care for the sick, injured, poor and downtrodden.

As it was the churches I attended were fashion shows. The men wore nice suits and of course the wimmen were impeccably dressed. And, even though they said that everyone was welcome no matter how humble they didn't mean it, and if someone showed up in ill fitting hand me downs then the "good people" assumed that the Lord was punishing the less fortunate, perhaps because daddy was a drinker or mama was a fallen woman.

Yep, you could always tell who was washed in the blood by how prosperous they appeared and how generous they were with the church.

It's hard to believe that The Rev. Dr. Jerry Falwell will go on TV and state unequivocally that the word is clear and he has read it.

And, it doesn't matter if we believe it. All that matters is that his congregation does.

And then Sunday morning as they leave church they can say "Nice ass kicking, Reverend!"

Amen 'Dawg. I can no longer deny my lying eyes. Religion and politics has mixed globally and ruined a pretty good thing we mortals have going on. Bush, Iraq, Israel and the Hagee's of this world have finally pushed me into reality. I don't believe mankind “fell from grace” and deserves to be tossed into a firey lake because two mythical people listened to a lying talking snake and ate some forbidden magic fruit from a magic tree. Nope, it's a divisive pile of poop used to splinter the few of us who would otherwise be staunch allies in these latter days of AmeriKa. So it is said; so it is written; so it is done.

That's some good lawyerin'.
