Scientist James D. Watson, co-discoverer of the structure of DNA and a Nobel Prize winner, says anti-Semitism is justified, in a recent magazine interview.

The ADL called Dr. Watson's remarks about Jews "disturbing" and is asking Watson to clarify them.

Watson, 78, who lives in Cold Harbor, N.Y., tells Esquire magazine in its January edition that anti-Semitism, in some circumstances, is justified.

In an interview profile for the magazine Watson asks rhetorically, "Should you be allowed to make an anti-Semitic remark?" He answered: "Yes, because some anti-Semitism is justified. Just like some anti-Irish feeling is justified. If you can't be criticized, that's very dangerous. You lose the concept of a free society."

Apparently a firm believer in eugenics, Watson also feels "Ashkenazi Jews" - Jews descended from the medieval Jewish communities in the area of Germany - have higher intelligence than other people.

"I've wondered why people aren't more intelligent," Watson says. "Why isn't everyone as intelligent as Ashkenazi Jews? And it may be that societies work best when there's a mixture of ability - the bright people would never be an army."

Watson's remarks were part of the magazine's January cover story, which consists of interviews with famous and notable people who reveal "What I've Learned" from life. Included are interviews with Katie Couric, actor Peter O'Toole and magicians Penn & Teller, among others.

Ken Jacobson, the deputy national director of the ADL, reacted strongly to Watson's statements.

"Those are very strange comments coming from an individual like that," Jacobson told NewsMax. "At the very least I think he needs to clarify his remarks. It sounds like he was trying to make some general comment about political correctness. He makes a reference that groups can be criticized, that not to be able to criticize a group isn't right. That's not to say you can't make comments about Jews, but anti-Semitism is a very specific statement, not just criticism, but a specific type of statement."

Jacobson not only objected to Watson's "disturbing" endorsement of anti-Semitism, but also objected to Watson's statement that Ashkenazi Jews are more intelligent than other people.

"That also is a genetic stereotype," Jacobson said. "We believe that if Jews have succeeded in a certain field, it has been due to Jewish traditions, culture, and the valuing of education. We don't get into all the genetic stereotyping."

Jacobson added, "Obviously, the impact of anti-Semitism through the century has been devastating to Jews, and I would hope that's not what he really meant. In and of itself, the statement that some anti-Semitism is good is a disturbing statement. He needs to clarify it."

Watson also holds some strong political views. For example, he labels President Bush and Sen. Bill Frist "rich trash."

He suggests the rich have "used their money to buy the presidency."

About Frist, he continued: "And Frist isn't an innocent bystander, with his own family fortune - hundreds of millions. The piece of sh--, I hate him."

Watson says his own politics have evolved from the left to libertarianism. He said he "turned against the left wing" because "they don't like genetics, because genetics implies that sometimes in life we fail because we have had bad genes."

Watson complains that the poorer classes are having more children than the richer, more intelligent classes.

"I think now we're in a terrible sitution where we should pay the rich people to have children." He says if we don't encourage procreation of wealthier citizens, IQ levels will most definitely fall.

As for Watson's own genetic lineage, his biography posted on http://nobelprize.org says his mother was of Scottish and Irish heritage and his father, a Chicago businessman, had ancestors of English descent.

Good for Watson.

So you agree with Watson? You agree that racism is OK? You agree that some people are genetically more intelligent than others? Come on, the guy admits he hates Bill Frist just because the guy is filthy rich. He even thinks that if so-called "smart" people don't start having babies then the world is basically screwed. He obviously has some form of dementia, or is an egotistical arrogant fool.

You agree that racism is OK?

Depends on what you mean by that.

You agree that some people are genetically more intelligent than others?

Absolutely.

Childhood health can indeed play a role in development of the brain, but that may or may not have anything to do with genes and a lot to do with environment and proper nutrition.

I am firm believer that while some people may have a better chance at developing a high intelligence as an adult, most anyone can with desire and motivation increase their intelligence to a high level. Now severely handicapped people such as people with metal retardation and autism may not be able to do this, I don't see why a normal healthy person couldn't.

Also Dr. Watson's implication that smart people wouldn't care for something enough to die fighting for it is completely and totally wrong.

The effect of nutrition is small, barring actual deficiencies.

There are chances, and then there are chances.

Desire and motivation sufficient for acting upon long-term goals themselves correlate with intelligence. Anyone is not the same as everyone, and theoretically possible is not the same practical or realizable with available resources.

Normal and healthy are not terms exclusive of dumb.

Fact is 5-8% of African Americans and 50% or so of Africans are barely educable. About 8% of African Americans are smarter (in IQ terms -- in voting terms they are much more race-smart) than the average white.

For people of good will it is tempting to ascribe the difference entirely to environment, "upbringing", "culture", "legacy of slavery", etc. which is admittedly theoretically possible, but is mostly wishful thinking, IMO.

IQ and the Wealth of Nations

The book includes the authors' estimates of average IQ scores for each country, based on their analysis of published reports; their observation that national gross domestic product per capita is correlated with IQ; and their conclusion that the IQ differences correlated with income differences by a factor of about 0.7 (r2), meaning that IQ explains more than half of the variation in per capita GDP.

The authors stated that they believe IQ is due to both genetic and environmental factors. They also stated that low GDP can cause low IQ, just as low IQ can cause low GDP. (See: Positive feedback)

The authors argued that it is the ethical responsibility of rich, high-IQ nations to financially assist poor, low-IQ nations, as it is the responsibility of rich citizens to assist the poor.

The book was cited several times in the popular press, notably the British conservative newspaper The Times. Because Tatu Vanhanen is the father of Matti Vanhanen, the Finnish Prime minister, his work has received wide publicity in Finland.

[edit] National IQ estimates

Central to the book's thesis is a tabulation of what Lynn and Vanhanen believe to be the average IQs of the world's nations. Rather than do their own IQ studies (a potentially massive project), the authors average and adjust existing studies.

For most of the 185 nations, no reliable studies are available. In those cases, the authors have used an estimated value by taking averages of the IQs of surrounding nations. For example, the authors arrived at a figure of 84 for El Salvador by averaging their calculations of 79 for Guatemala and 88 for Colombia. Those estimates are not included in the calculations of income differences and do not appear in the table below.

To obtain a figure for South Africa, the authors averaged IQ studies done on different ethnic groups, resulting in a figure of 72. The figures for Colombia, Peru and Singapore were arrived at in a similar manner. For People's Republic of China, the authors used a figure of 109.4 for Shanghai and adjusted it down by an arbitrary 6 points because they believed the average across China's rural areas was probably less than that in Shanghai. Another figure from a study done in Beijing was not adjusted downwards. Those two studies formed the resultant score for China (PRC).

In some cases, the IQ of a country is estimated by averaging the IQs of "neighboring countries" that are not actually neighbors of the country in question. For example, Kyrgyzstan's IQ is estimated by averaging the IQs of Iran and Turkey, neither of which is close to Kyrgyzstan – China, which is a geographic neighbor, is not counted as such by Lynn and Vanhanen.

To account for the Flynn effect (an increase in IQ scores over time), the authors sometimes adjusted the results of older studies upward by an arbitrary number of points.

reality

Such language.

True story: I was reading one of my wife's textbooks for one of her Masters of Organizational Behaviour courses. The guy used the word "reality" -- a lot.

I said to my wife "I bet this guy's an Objectivist." She asked what that was, so I gave her the cliff notes version of the cult.

So one day in class, she asks him directly if he was an Objectivist. He blinked for moment, then confirmed it.

So I assume you are not black then, right?

IQ as measured today doesn't mean a whole lot. If someone is not even trying on an IQ test because they don't give a crap and are only taking it because they are being forced to at the government school they are required to attend, then the result is obviously also crap. Also there is a difference between IQ and knowledge. You can have a genius IQ but without enough knowledge and the resources to gain that knowledge you can still be dirt poor.

to deny that is to deny reality.

To accept that is to accept responsibility for the well being of those that are born with a much lower IQ. It also means that God blesses people according to the Earthly tabernacle that they are created in. I'm sorry, that doesn't seem like the God I know at all.

So I assume you are not black then, right?

That would be a good bet.

IQ as measured today doesn't mean a whole lot.

On the contrary, it is an excellent predictor of quite a number of things.

If someone is not even trying on an IQ test because they don't give a crap and are only taking it because they are being forced to at the government school they are required to attend, then the result is obviously also crap.

Indeed, IQ correlates with caring about education and tests.

But let us for the sake of argument grant that blacks systematically, by intention, do poorly at them -- and whites who attend the same government schools nevertheless care more. Some blacks do indeed care. If their IQ is drawn from the same distribution, then the means of the high ends should be the same. But it is not. Above any given threshold X higher than the white average, black scores are closer to X.

Also there is a difference between IQ and knowledge.

To accept that is to accept responsibility for the well being of those that are born with a much lower IQ.

A natural lottery is not just, but is also not unjust, requiring repair. Man is not the redeemer, and when he tries to be he is prone to error.

It also means that God blesses people according to the Earthly tabernacle that they are created in.

Assuming a high IQ is a blessing in itself. Is it? In all times, places, a circumstances? Is it the most important blessing? Or is what a brainy person does with their brains the thing that matters?

It's not everyone who catches that quick change in quality in that particular portion of Disney's "The Three Little Pigs."
