HEY! You guys obviously don't understand the concept of the sport of Ice Driving in Texas. You may have enough Spam to have gotten Napoleon's army through the Russian winter or spare batteries that would send a rocketship to Jupiter and back, but let a inch of ice show up on the bridge, and --- Momma's Gotta Go To Walmart!!

Many of us more experienced aficionados of Texas Ice Driving even keep special equipment for the few days of the sporting season. This usually consists of a '64 Plymouth Fury without a hood, a Lamesa High School football helmet, a 30' length of logging chain and 3 inebriated or otherwise brain damaged friends.

It's part social event, part olympic sport, and part rocket science. The cunning strategy of curling, the excitement of bumper cars, the shared comraderie and blood donations from friends and strangers alike! Ah, it's a rusting, crumpling, winter wonderland, where the goal is to make one's way to the nearest overpass, slow almost to a stop and then accelerate, trying to gain the pinnacle before sliding off and over the embankment. The first one to reach the top wins, regardless of the direction the car is facing.

Points are deducted for tire chains, four wheel drive, or having an IQ above the outside temperture. Extra points are rewarded for the thoughtfullness of having a case of Budwiser in the trunk for ballast, having tires of more than two different sizes, or borrowing your snotty neighbor's new Lexus ("It's a 'mergency, Vinny, no foolin' the missus is havin' us a nother kid!").

So, next time, just go out and have fun. Nobody will care if you have one of those caps with earmuffs; you'll be one of the few, the brave, the 'freezing-my-toocass-off'. Bring a bar-b-q pit if you think of it, and enough beer for everbody!

There are, however, some "pre-fessionals" here in Texas that practice for this competitive sport year around. Almost anything that can be done on ice can be done in the first fifteen minutes of a 3" gullywasher (tha's a heavy rainstorm for ya'll fureigners). Practice takes place on most interstate highways in and around major cities.

Downhill slalom Ice Driving is especially competitive wherein the competitor must be moving at least 80 mph while traffic is slowed to 45-50 mph in all lanes. Additional points are gained by having a dually pickup with empty bed and no windshield wipers or a jeep with a ground clearance of over 5 foot. Many of these fierce competitors never make pre-fessional status and are removed from the gene pool in their first practice run.

Those who do make Pro status can be seen on most national news programs in the rear of police cruisers or ambulances shortly after each Ice Driving competition is held.

Cold as the proverbial "witches tit".... 9° right now, with a chill factor of -4°

Other than that, not much in the way of precip this go-round.

Interestingly, I was just reading yesterday a study done by NASA concerning solar cycles. Apparently, solar cycles run in approximately 10 year spans, with the next peak to occur in (you guessed it) another 5 years. This would put right now as being a "low" in the period. Seems to be fitting this year.

But that's not the scary part. The scary part is that according to solar physicist David Hathaway of the Marshall Space Flight Center, the next solar peak (named cycle 24) looks like it's going to be one of the most intense cycles since record keeping began. They're predicting it to be the worst in 400 years... I don't know if he knows what he's talking about, but I do know that I sure ain't a solar physicist, so I'd assume he's more qualified than me to figure this stuff out...

The biggest in 400 years!!!! WOW!!! You know, an event like that could amount to Biblical proportions!!!

Damnifiknow....

But my guess is if you don't think that there will be some dramatic non-linear results, particularly geophysical and weather-related, from all of that enormous volume of energy constantly hitting the earth, accumulating day after day, month after month for the next four or five years, then Chaos Theory will be very, very educational for you when you get around to it.

Just kidding. Like I said, damnifiknow.

We're getting colder as the day goes on - Mrs.L had her two doctors' appointments canceled today...wussies. There goes my chance to make "pre-fessional" status on the road.

Brrrrrrrrr - I checked in northern Iowa to see how our farmers are faring: 7 and -10 up there...and I see that I've forgotten how to do the degree thingie.

I see that I've forgotten how to do the degree thingie.

Type the & symbol followed by deg without a space.

I learned that you can't put a . or anything else behind deg without a space or it won't work.

That works for lots of things. For example "my 2¢" is done by typing 2, then & then cent all together without any spaces.

Fractions are done with & then frac then the number (12 for example to make ½). But this doesn't work for every fraction, only the very common ones.

Here is a great site to learn and do all sorts of cool HTML stuff....

Another cool trick is anytime you see something you want to be able to duplicate, highlight it (and it is usually wise to highlight a paragraph on either or both sides of it) then right click on it and select "view source code" (Firefox says "view selection source"). This will show what was done to get the desired effect.

To simply go down to the next line
without making a new paragraph, you simply type br in between <>

We will... BTW indenting and italicizing this quote was done by putting ul between <>, then putting i between <> and ending it the same way except with a / preceding the ul and the i....

I've also found it to be a good way of posting an article that has links, pics, or other things in it is to highlight the article, right click it, select "view source", then copy that. When you post the article, it appears just like the webpage, the same fonts, colors, etc AND the links are in there automatically...

Hell, this is the first I had heard of any of the above. LOL. And I only thought that I was informed.

But at least I am not homesick, life in the panhandle is proving to give me a taste of home (Minnesota) to make sure that I am nice and comfy (curled up with a ball of yarn crocheting another nice warm blanket while sipping on a hot brandy).

It's a very sunny 23 degrees right now ... gets down to 7-10 degrees at night, everything is iced over and very pretty, although some have lost power.

I like it too, from nice warm computer room with its south facing window. When out at the shop earlier, it was not as nice.
