January 18, 2007 -- WMR received a number of e-mails as a result of our Jan. 8 piece on methane bubbling up from the ocean floors. The ocean floor methane is turning into gaseous from methane hydrate ice form because the deep ocean is warming as a result of global warming from greenhouse gas emissions. A reader in Minnesota sent us this important amplifying information:

"Methane bubbling up from the ocean floor is a clear and present danger to shipping and even aviation. By the way, there is something like 10,000 billion tons of methane under the sea in methane hydrate deposits. Furthermore, a theory called the "Clathrate gun hypothesis" or the "Hydrate hypothesis," posits that melting methane hydrate has cause severe episodes of runaway global warming in the past. We are sitting on a bomb. Mankind's emission are the fuse, melting permafrost is the detonator, and melting oceanic methane hydrate is the bomb. Since mankind's emissions is a much larger trigger than past severe episodes, the current unfolding episode of runaway global warming will occur much more rapidly, and therefore be much, much more severe." Sorry folks, but this isn't anything new. Solar Activity is at an all time high, and we're seeing the repercussions of that fact. For people to say it's all Global Warming, and that it's all human made, give it a couple more years. After 2012, we should see a RAPID decline in temps, all because the solar cycle will have shifted again.

This country's priorities are all fucked up.

Sorry Tommy, but the stats are new, nothing to do with solar flares...(but I'm sure Rush Limbaugh would love for you to believe that).

Ice core samples do not lie like Limbaugh.

I am agnostic on this, mainly, but think that the precession of the equonix may have alot to do with global warming/cooling. It to me is hard to believe than all the chaos man has recently brought to the planet cannot have effected it too much. But then, the earth is much larger than we can readily visulize. And the earth dosn't give one good hoot about us or the the wooded owls.

My one thought, that I have never seen addressed (But surely it has been) is the nature of heat transfer - the greater the difference of temperature the greater exponentially the heat transfer.

So if the earth warms a little, it will, by the nature of thermodymamics, loose more of the heat. But if the atmosphere is more insulating then.... Gets darn complicated quick.

Anyway here is a link to one of the greatest astro diagrams the world has ever known, IMHO.

If you can understand this in a few hours you are far superior to me in mental capacity.

Since the methane is emitted from the ocean floor, much work would need to be done to prove a causal connection between surface or atmosphere temperatures and deep ocean temperatures, not to mention shallow crust temperatures.

Incidentally, Philip Gold's "The Deep Hot Biosphere" discsses methane emissions at length. According to this theories, diamonds are the result of methane emissions, hydrocarbons in general are primordial (not the result of the decomposition of flora or fauna), and life probably evolved from the extremophiles that subsist upon methane emissions.

I'm not capable of proving whether or not global warming is a man-maade problem or not, but let me offer an observation. Pollution probably peaked in the early 1970's, as far as the US and W. Europe anyway. There used to be a lot more snow. It would start snowing about Thanksgiving and the would be snow on the ground until March or so. I think global warming is caused by charging exhorbitant insurance rates on muscle cars.

I was planning to blame either centrifugal force or a very inexpensive wristwatch.

Someone who understands! That's why there's global warming on Mars.

Once the Sun calms down (and it will) it'll get cold again.

We've got very, very little to do with it, and there is little we can do about it.

Methane emissions undoubtedly have nothing to do with surface temperatures or the paltry evidence there is for "global warming."

Variations in methane emissions more likely are caused by local variations in pressure and temperature, brought about by tectonic plate dynamics or even currents in the sub-crust lava flows.

Looking at the article again, I'm not sure whether the author thinks global warming causes methane emissions or the reverse or something else.

If you've ever cooked anything you probably noticed puting a lid on something causes much more heat to build up than steaming away. We need more carbon dioxide tokeep all the oxygen from leaking.
