Bellevue Baptist Fires Minister Over Alleged Sexual Abuse

MEMPHIS, TN - A Memphis megachurch hopes to clean up its reputation, by firing a minister accused of child sexual abuse. Bellevue Baptist Church leaders fired minister Paul Williams this morning over allegations of abuse that took place 17 years ago. Upon his firing, Williams said he was remorseful of how his actions hurt the church.

An investigation came after Pastor Steven Gaines told his congregation in December that he knew about the abuse for six months. The church's personnel committee viewed the final report yesterday and made their decision. That internal investigation of Williams' alleged child sexual abuse took a month to complete.

Bellevue says it had enough reason to fire Williams on the spot this morning. Administrative Pastor David Coombs says the committee felt they should act immediately to start a healing process within the church. But there is still a lingering concern over an outside investigation by the Department of Childrens' Services.

"It's always a concern about what an outside investigation may uncover," said Coombs. "But we have been very diligent to investigate deeper and talk to a large number of people and we have found no evidence that there has been a reocurrance."

But the ongoing DCS investigation of the initial allegation is open and should be wrapped up in a matter of weeks. Bellevue administrators say the church is cooperating with all outside investigations and will help if called upon.

But Kevin Rardin with the District Attorney's office says an internal investigation is one thing... a DCS investigation is another.

He says no one from the church has called his office. He's calling out to anyone who has knowledge of potential abuse.

"If any person has any knowledge that a child has been abused or neglecter. And failure to report can be a crime in and of itself," said Rardin.

There are no criminal charges filed against anyone in this case. The church maintains they haven't found any other allegations of abuse. The congregation will hear the full report Sunday evening.
