So I'm cruising down the highway Tuesday in my Chevy Cavalier (the one with 344,000 miles on the original engine and transmission) and the engine decides to blow on me. Dang. I was hoping to get 400,000 miles out of it, but it didn't make it.

I think the head gasket blew. Oh well. My mechanic is putting an engine and transmission in it (the old tranny's good, but I'm going to get both replaced) that have 22,000 miles on them, for $2200. That's a very good deal.

Ha! Don't tell me American cars aren't high quality!

My Cavalier blows up

A "Good American" would've called the bomb squad and had it defused.

(By blowing it up, of course.)

I think you ought to check into the very real possibility that Islamo-fascists were screwing with your head and that that blew up your Cavalier. :P

That's quite a feat, esp for the tranny. Usually the seals and clutch packs are shot a bit over 100,000.

However if he's going to put $2200 bucks into it, Hmmmmm.

For a few grand more he can get a much better car, assuming he has not rebuilt all the major systems, brakes, axles, paint, wireing, upholstry, paint and everything else.

We have bought a 2004 Chevy Express 12 passenger van, one ton, and love it. Just had the tranny's filter changed and a total fluid backflush at 60,000 miles ( highly reccommended) I'll be getting a new car soon, and it will be an American badge.

Our 1986 Plymouth Voyager mini van has 265,000 on it, has driven all over western Mexico and been to the tip of Baja once, maybe twice. But I have rebuilt the engine once and just did the tranny for the second time this summer.

I have, most of it myself. Brakes, rotors, drums, alternatoor, starter, water pump, front bearings (sealed units). The only thing I didn't do is the fuel pump, because I'd have to drop the gas tank.

The repair involves dropping in an engine and transmission with 22,000 miles on them, along with a new radiator the mechanic is including for free because I'm mostly paid cash.

I figure I'll get a year, year and a half out of it, then strip it and junk it. GM doesn't make Cavaliers anymore, having replaced them with the Cobalt. I might buy another used Cavalier or maybe a used Cobalt, depending on how the quality for them turns out.

This Cavalier is the only new car I've never bought, and it'll be the last one. Cheap as it was ($12,000) it was still too much, compared to the cost of used cars.

Why did I get 344,000 miles on a Chevy Cavalier before the engine blew? The rest of the car runs just fine.

American cars aren't high quality.

I've had decent luck with them over the years. 200K out of a 94 t-bird, 195k out of a 93 dodge caravan, 190k out of a 98 dodge ram 1500. The dodge ram was the worst of them. had to rebuild rear differential at 120k and transmission at 121k. the others, no problems at all.

Just as PC users don't know what the big deal is with Macs, 'cause they have no experience with them so too, is it true that "American made" car users don't really get it 'cause they haven't given the Honda, Toyota, Nissan, etc. a try.
