Dear Editor: Christ said, “Blessed are the peacemakers." So, how did Christians turn into Christian-Zionists (evangelicals), elect Bush, and fund the bombing of Iraqi and Palestinian children? And how can they claim to be “pro-life?"

I guess the tourists don’t go into refugee camps where Palestinians are starving. They don’t visit the Baptist Church in Gaza where American and Arab Christians worship together (and pray the American-made missiles don’t hit them).

Where does the Bible say we should support the “state" of Israel? When God spoke to Abraham in Genesis 12:1-3, there WAS no state of Israel. Israel, the grandson of Abraham, hadn’t yet been born.

Helping the Zionist movement along was Cyrus Scofield, an opportunistic criminal-turned-preacher. According to Joseph Canfield, author of “The Incredible Scofield," Scofield tore out the pages of a King James Bible, pasted them onto a yellow notepad, and doodled on the yellow paper for years. In 1908, the Oxford Press (reportedly close to Lord Rothschild) published his notes. Hence, the Scofield Reference Bible, relied upon by the seminaries of America. References to the Jews and the state of Israel were in these footnotes.

Somebody knew there was to be a state of Israel and had plans for occupying Palestine before the 1948 Balfour Declaration. In 1967, when Scofield was dead, footnotes were added to declare that “anti-Semitism" by nations would bring judgment upon those nations. The stage was set.

Christians should follow Christ, not do the bidding of AIPAC [American Israel Public Affairs Committee].

So, how did Christians turn into Christian-Zionists (evangelicals), elect Bush, and fund the bombing of Iraqi and Palestinian children? And how can they claim to be 60;pro-life?"

Quite simply, they were labeled as such (which doesn't necessarily make the label accurate); it can be argued they also elected Clinton and the previous Democratic administration (in anger over GHWB's breaking his "read my lips, no new taxes" pledge) which Democratic administration likewise "funded the bombing of Iraqi and Palestinian children during the '90s" (that argument cuts both ways); and they can claim to be pro-life because they are anti-abortion, not necessarily anti-capital punishment or accommodating of terrorism.

There are many 'red-state' evangelicals who of late are dissatisifed with Bush et al (the Republicans lost much of their support in the last election as they stayed home), so while you can argue they're not as informed as internet surfers and they learn slowly, you can't argue they continue to support Bush as much as they used to. And the alternative (supporting Democrats) isn't appealing so don't look for any big moves to the left in fly-over country.

When any political constituency is broad-brushed with misleading labels, it is easy to generate the appearance of hypocrisy.

No narrow view re just Bush on this topic or others.. it does cut both ways.. I equally reject them both ~Rs & Ds.. they are truly just two sides of one coin. But that does not address why there are professing Christians who claim to be anti-abortion but support this war as well as the treatment of Palestinians.. they've harden their hearts..

a) Eliminate the false Christians
b) Distinguish between the PLO, Palestinian terrorists and Palestinian bystanders
c) Ask them again and include Palestinian recognition for Israel's right to exist in peace from terrorism...

and now you might get a much more insightful answer.

I'm a pro-life professing Christian who supported (and still supports) the war against the Taliban in Afghanistan, but *not* Iraq, and who also believes Hamas, PLO, Hezbullah make themselves fair targets when they are targeting civilians. And while I have a great deal of sympathy for the average palestinian civilian who is caught in the cross fire, it is near impossible to separate him from the terrorists he elects to represent him and who subsequently hide behind him, and have been doing so since the 60's under Arafat's "leadership" of the Palestinian cause.

Everyone has had a hand in making the mideast a seething cauldron of conflict: Jews, Arabs, Palestinians, Iranians, Syrians, Egyptians, US, Westerners, Europeans, Asians, Russians, yada yada yada... singling out "Christian Zionists" with loaded questions and false premises, IMO, merely exposes the questioner's agenda.

This could also be written:

Iraqi/Palestinian civilians could also justifiably state Hamas, PLO, Hezbullah jews, zionists, americans make themselves fair targets when they are targeting civilians. And while I have a great deal of sympathy for the average palestinian jew, zionist, american civilian who is caught in the cross fire, it is near impossible to separate him from the terrorists he elects to represent him and who subsequently hide behind him, and have been doing so since the 60's under Arafat's zionist "leadership" of the Palestinian israeli cause.
