I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, sir, but you – and your party – are no longer in a position to insist on anything." SING ALONG WITH MITCH? Posted by NanceGreggs in General Discussion: Politics Fri Feb 02nd 2007, 10:07 PM Sing Along With Mitch? By Nancy Greggs Senator Mitch McConnell Sir: It was with great interest that I read your statement today that Republicans will block the start of debate on a nonbinding resolution opposing President George W. Bush's Iraq strategy, unless two Republican alternatives are also considered. We insist on a process that allows several different approaches on our side to this issue. We have a lot to say about the process by which the matter is debated. You insist? I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, sir, but you and your party are no longer in a position to insist on anything. Remember when the Democrats were in your (minority) position and wanted to be heard? Well, we all know how that turned out, dont we? But heres the real deal, Mitch. In case you didnt notice, there was an election back in November, and the American people made their position quite clear. We have had a snoot-full of the GOPs concept of the process by which matters are debated. It was an incredibly simple process, apparently devised by simple-minded people: there simply is no debate. Let me give you a quick refresher course on recent history. This president invaded Iraq based on lies, sent our troops into harms way without sufficient equipment, no less a viable military plan or an exit strategy. He has depleted the nations treasury and plunged us into unfathomable debt. He has ignored the Constitution, acted contrary to law, far overstepped the boundaries of his office, and stripped American citizens of their rights in the name of protection against an enemy he largely created in his own mind. He has cost us the support of our allies, the respect of people around the world, and has ignited the enmity of those who most want to do us harm. So, Mitch, one has to wonder: Where was the debate from you and your colleagues when all of this was going on? Where was the questioning of tactical skill when every corner turned in Iraq led to yet another dead end? Where was the reasoned discussion about the escalation in violence and in cost, investments that accomplished nothing but more violence and more cost? Through all of the above, you and your party members who were then, I would remind you, in complete control of the government never debated a God damned thing. You were all much too busy making sure the rubber-stamp was well-inked, so you could put your collective imprimatur on every scatterbrained notion the Idiot you elevated to the White House wanted sanctioned, regardless of how detrimental it was to the country, its citizenry, and our nations ability to maintain the respect and allegiance of our once reliable allies. If it were not for the fact that this entire Iraq misadventure has cost billions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of lives, the idea that you now want to be heard on any issue would be downright laughable. But no one is laughing, Mitch. Because the price of your partys astounding negligence in exercising oversight and questioning the sanity of this administrations policies over the past six years has been far too high and it is a price we, as Americans, will pay for decades to come. And now, four years into a blunder of mammoth proportions, you want to be heard. Let me tell you, Mitch, the American people have heard from your party loud and clear. We have heard you vote to cut the pay, benefits and pensions of the very troops you sent into combat without body or vehicle armor. We have heard you preach your support-the-troops sermon as you ignore their plight, and that of their families. We have heard you 'listen' to those who have pointed to the obvious incompetence of the administrations conduct of this war not by assessing their concerns, but by dismissing them as being not only unpatriotic, but supporters of our country's enemies. And we have also heard the deafening silence, as war-profiteers were handed no-bid contracts, as billions of taxpayers dollars went missing without so much as a single question being asked, as battle-weary soldiers have been deployed, time and again, without rest or respite from the task at hand and now as wounded, debilitated, psychologically-scarred veterans seek help that will, for so many, come too late if it comes at all. As Senator Reid so succinctly put it: (Republican) obstruction is an abdication of their responsibility to the American people on the most important issue facing our nation today. The American people deserve to know where every member of Congress stands on the president's plan to escalate the war. Yes, Mitch, the American people deserve to know where you, and your party members, stand. And the answer is obvious; you stand in in the way in the way of making any progress towards extricating ourselves from the quagmire that your beloved leader has created, and that the Republicans have through a combination of negligence of oversight and mindless cheerleading not only supported, but endorsed. In summary, Mitch, the only reasoning I can see behind your recent remarks is that you are intent on bringing yourself, and your party, even lower in the publics estimation than it already stands. Let me assure you that in that regard, your party members need no assistance. They have already lost any credibility on the issue of Iraq, as well as the trust of the American people. Believe me, they dont need your help.
Poster Comment: It seems like most of these lessons should have taken place somewhere in public school, or starting around age 2 or three in the home. Do unto others, cuz if you don't, payback is a real bastard...sorta. But if youre the elite, you aren't taught this in home or in very expensive private school. You're taught the opposite. Do unto others as you please, you're entitled. And I believe this is one of the hallmarks of sociopathy, expecting others to treat you with respect and such but never yourself having to do the same to others. Then, when they don't, you act indignant.
