Burke, whenever I had mentioned on the forums that I was not into Country Music much (because I am from the north and there is no Country Music radio here) I would get a mean reaction - that it was proof I was anti-American because I did not identifiy with music of the heartland or something.

I never understood how Country Music - the music of the honky tonk anti establishment ('Take This Job and Shove It') became the music that is like part of the cult of what you termed the reich-wing.

Maybe bluedogtxn can fill in any info on how this music genre was co-opted by the so called reich-wing?

That is a good question because Country music was fueled from it's very beginning by outlaws, misfits and assorted others who had little love for the Law.

I think it happened in the 90's about the time grunge came on scene. When that exploded you loved it or hated it. The hip-hop scene was in its infancy. A lot of people struggled to relate to either and so did a lot of stations. Good contemporary rock was hard to find and it was finding a hard time competing with grunge and hip-hop. I think artists who would have otherwise been contemporary rock found a home in Nashville. That and the old guard of country was aging out. I think Nashville said we need to "modernize" or die. The Clear Channel effect happened much later in the process. That's my 2 cents worth.

The last of old type of country is I think exemplified by the song 'Take This Job and Shove It' which came out at the end of the 70s. While this song is anti- establishment like we expect the Republicans to be it is also anti corporation and anti business. The Republican Country Music cult members of today are pro big corporations (defending Walmart). So a song by Johnny Paycheck called 'Take This Job and Shove It' would never even get air time in the modern Country scene.

Why the change in the music industry happened I can guess at but I really don't know for sure.

My theory is that Rock was the music of the protesting leftists and the Country crowd of the 60s and 70s was still anti Republican but the South was changing thanks to Nixon's Southern strategy which Reagan's revolution continued and took advantage of. So that the Southerner started to identify the Republican party and the music identified this trend. Music does not set trends as much as identify them.

For example I don't think gangsta rap created the gang problems but came along because there was already a gang problem.

When asked why they wouldn't play the album, one bigshot Pro-war country station programmer said "I read the lyrics and "Not Ready to Make Nice" was basically a four minute F*** YOU to us!"

Well, you dumped on Shania and she showed you that country needed her much more than the other way around, and now the Chix can do the same thing.

Yeah, men in position but backing away

Freedom is stuck in reverse

Let's get out of Iraq and get back on the track

And let's rebuild America first

Merle stuck by Nixon and Vietnam and disdain for flower power, never admitting error or revising his views. As recently as 8 years ago he'd still quietly stand his ground and stubbornly refuse to disavow it. But, this current obscenity has forced him to come out against the madness, and he must see the parallels, right?

These new lyrics are the closest thing to an admission of fallibility on the former stance he took that made him controversial all those years ago.

"Okie From Muskogee" was very controversial and other country artists were too busy trying to cross over to risk alienating young folks then.

Now that giant radio congloms controlled by chickenhawks support "Texas Republicans" (neither of the Bushes are true Texans or Republicans-Reagan was forced to take Poppy on the ticket and even "shown the brush he'd be tarred with if he refused") their listeners don't know that they're owned by Zionists who get jocks with Southern accents to mouth the plan for ERETZ ISRAEL and make it sound dear to Confederate hearts, no matter how much American blood is spilled.

Even people who are programmed never to think in critical terms about Israel can be slapped momentarily awake by asking them this:

"Why did Americans fight, die and slaughter innocent non-combatants wholesale (see the MILE OF DEATH) http://digitaljournalist.org/issue0212/pt04.html to protect Kuwait's oil fields from Iraq's slant drlling when the sons and daughters of Kuwait's royal families were discoing the nites away and powdering their noses on the Riviera?

Shouldn't their sons have fought to protect their own country, and if not why not, and, WHY US?"

Now, don't get me wrong, I worship Merle Haggard and I'm very pleased that he's writing and singing these lyrics. But, the real story is the last man to abandon Nixon and Vietnam is openly opposing Bush!

He doesn't get any airplay now, either. Gretchen Wilson's POLITICALLY UNCORRECT is aired occasionally on country video channels and that has Merle as a cameo, but his videos? Never.

He even appeared in a wonderful video in duet with Marty Stuart in FARMER'S BLUES and it was very hot, and that rarely gets played now that Merle has spoken out against the war.

Those who admit the truth may not trumpet it but they don't rally or poll favorably anymore.

It's an easy phenomena to point out - but how do you give the extra 50 IQ points they need to figure it out for themselves - and the courage to want to do it.

A lot of it, I think, goes back to 911 - they still believe, and want to believe because the alternative scares them too much, the Official Conspiracy Theory™ of "19Arabswhohateuscuzwe'refree". What it comes down to is they are basically stupid - the bottom quartile on the "Bell Curve".

Maybe you can answer my question at #2? Merle Haggard is a perfect Country artist that illustrates this relationship between the South and the Republican party.

Is it the legacy of the Nixon Southern Strategy? I never understood how Country became transformed from a music geared to basically poor working class whites both urban and rural and into the music of a political movement.

I don't think we will ever have a Republican candidate for president not have a country song for a campaign theme song except for maybe Gov. Arnold who had a Twisted Sister song as his campaign theme.

In any case the Republicans and Country Music link have become cliched as any listener to Sean Hannity's radio program can attest - and Sean is not even Southern - he is from Long Island but pretends he is from Georgia or something.

I saw Merle Haggard in concert last year. I never was particularly a fan and only saw him because he opened for Bob Dylan (odd couple, no?). He was really cool and very openly anti-bush and his war. I was majorly impressed and liked his music too! plus he's kinda cute :)

I believe people's viewpoints can change from experience, from circumstances and from thinking and learning. if we can't do that, what's the point?

some would call it flip-flopping - how shallow. I call it maturing.
